A New Front in the Abortion Wars - Banning Sex-Selection Abortions

Commentary by Steven W. Mosher

September 30, 2008 (pop.org) - On September 23rd, 2008, two congressmen, Trent Franks from Arizona and Jeff Fortenberry from Nebraska, introduced a bill to "prohibit discrimination against the unborn on the basis of sex or race." The event was overshadowed by debate over the proposed bail-out of America's financial sector, and so drew little press attention. But those who hold pro-life sentiments should take note of the "Susan B. Anthony Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2008," for it arguably opens a new front in the abortion wars. Like the ban on Partial Birth Abortion, it will stimulate public debate on grounds favorable to the pro-life cause. Moreover, it introduces into the pro-life arena existing U.S. jurisprudence on the elimination of discrimination on the basis of sex or race. Who would gainsay that the worst form of discrimination, bar none, is to deny unborn women or Blacks the right to life precisely on account of their innate characteristics of race or gender?

Some may believe that sex-selective abortion is only found in countries with a strong preference for sons, such as India, China, and Korea. But sex-selective abortion is also practiced in the U.S. by immigrant populations who bring with them their prejudices against girls, preference for boys, and find here that the ready availability of both ultrasounds and abortions makes it easy for them to act on these prejudices. Moreover, although it is difficult to come by hard evidence, I have no doubt that selfish and secularized American couples sometimes use sex-selective abortion to give birth to their preferred sex. As far as race-based abortions are concerned, Planned Parenthood has located most of its clinics in minority neighborhoods, and has been more than willing to accept donations specifically targeting Black babies for elimination.

Overwhelming numbers of Americans oppose the practice of sex-selective abortion, with a 2006 Zogby/USA Today poll showing that 86% would like to see it banned. I have no doubt that a similar super-majority would support a ban of race-selective abortion.

Some pro-lifers, I am certain, will disparage this incremental approach. They say that we should only mobilize our forces for total victory, and that working for anything less undermines our larger prospects. Politics, however, is the art of the possible. We should never, when it comes to protecting the unborn, let the perfect be the enemy of the good. As Robert George has recently written in the pages of the National Review, "The goal must be to accomplish in law and policy all that can be accomplished in the prevailing circumstances, while working to move public opinion in the directions more respectful of human life so as to make possible further advances in law and policy. Indeed, it is the small victories in the political domain that help get public opinion moving in the right direction, thus establishing the conditions for greater achievements."

In recent years the pro-life movement has passed laws, after years of legislative effort, banning particularly heinous forms of abortion. Partial birth abortion is no longer legal in the United States. Professor Hadley Arkes' Born Alive Infant Protection Act is another magnificent example of this legislative approach. The absolute numbers of babies that will be saved is not great in either instance, but both have served to move public opinion in a pro-life direction. The debate over partial birth abortion helped to uncover the ugly reality behind such euphemisms as "the termination of pregnancy" and "choice." The Born Alive Infant Protection Act forced abortion supporters to defend the indefensible: the killing of abortion survivors after birth in the name of "choice."

Bearing all this in mind, I propose that we--the pro-life movement--adopt as our next goal the banning of sex-and race-selective abortion. By formally protecting all female fetuses from abortion on ground of their sex, we would plant in the law the proposition that the developing child is a being whose claims on us should not depend on their sex.

Of course, this suggestion is not original with me. It was originally made by the redoubtable Hadley Arkes, who wrote in the pages of First Things in 1994 that "we seek simply to preserve the life of the child who survives the abortion. From that modest beginning, we might go on to restrict abortions after the point of "viability," or we could ban those abortions ordered up simply because the child happens to be a female. We could move in this way, in a train of moderate steps, each one commanding a consensus in the public, and each one tending, intelligibly, to the ultimate end, which is to protect the child from its earliest moments."

Banning sex- and race-selective abortion will force supporters of abortion to publicly address a question that they will find profoundly disturbing: Is the right to abortion a license to destroy children for any and all reasons, including that of their sex or race? Most people of moderate persuasion, even those inclined to be "pro-choice," will agree that the right of the unborn child to life should not depend on whether she (or he) possesses the requisite genitalia or skin color. Even those who believe in the absolute right to destroy the child under any and all circumstances, it is safe to predict, will be uncomfortable defending such an extreme position.

This sense of contradiction will be further heightened among radical feminists, the shock troops of the abortion movement. They may believe that the right to abortion is fundamental to women's emancipation, but many will recoil at the thought of aborting their unborn sisters. How can they, who so oppose patriarchy and discrimination on the basis of sex, consent to the ultimate form of patriarchy and discrimination, namely, the elimination of baby girls solely on account of their sex? Many, it is safe to predict, will be silent, while others will raise their voices, but with less conviction.

While the pro-aborts are stammering and stuttering, we pro-lifers will be advancing new moral and logical arguments against the exercise of the "right" to an abortion solely on the grounds of sex or race. For those who are immune to moral arguments, we can also use the examples of China and India, where sex-selective abortion is creating enormous societal problems. The debate over sex- and race-selective abortion will also help to focus the public's attention on how unregulated the abortion industry is. In these and other ways, the debate over this legislation will not subtract from, but add to, the larger goal of reversing Roe v. Wade and, ultimately, passing a Human Life Amendment.

Politically, the timing is right for such a move. Barack Hussain Obama has broke the last color barrier by becoming first African American to be nominated for president , while Sarah Palin is poised the shatter the glass ceiling. It is paradoxical that, at this time of great achievements, that civil rights protections for women and minorities should be eroding at the very beginning of life, in the womb. Decades of progress on both fronts are being threatened reversed by technology that allows people to act on their deepest prejudices in secret.

In any event, legislation has been introduced, and the battle has been joined. And the coming debate will be salubrious for our cause.

Linda Gibbons Acquitted of Charge Used by Province to Avoid Challenge to 14-year-old "Temporary" Injunction

By Tony Gosgnach

TORONTO, September 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Canadian pro-life hero Linda Gibbons has just been acquitted by a provincial court judge in Toronto on a charge of obstructing a peace officer and has walked out of court a free woman. Justice Clements rightly ruled that Gibbons's conduct of being peaceful and silent could in no way be interpreted to mean she was making any peace officer's job more difficult when she was arrested outside the Scott "Clinic" abortuary in Toronto earlier this year.

The decision brings into question the whole Crown/police tactic of charging Gibbons over a 14-year period with disobeying a peace officer, when the correct and more appropriate charge should have been disobeying a court order. Clements suggested Gibbons would have been guilty of that charge on the basis of the evidence with which he was presented ... but that charge was not laid.

A charge of disobeying a court order would have given Gibbons the right to a jury trial and the opportunity to challenge the constitutionality of the 14-year-old "temporary" court injunction -- something minions in the attorney-general's office seemingly want at all costs to avoid.

Gibbons has spent a total of over five years in prison for her repeated peaceful witnessing and offering of help to distressed pregnant women outside the Scott abortuary.

More details to follow ...

Bella Star Eduardo Saves Five Unborn Babies' Lives

By Tim Waggoner

LOS ANGELES, September 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Participants in a 40 Days for Life vigil held on Saturday outside the Family Planning Associates abortuary in Los Angeles were given a massive boost of inspiration when Bella star Eduardo Verastegui arrived unannounced to take action in spreading the pro-life message.

With the vigil being held outside the busiest abortion facility in Los Angeles, leader John Anthony says he was aware of the trials he and his team faced, but said his prayers were answered with the arrival of Eduardo.

"Eduardo arrived a little after 8 am and did not stop counseling, praying and encouraging women to choose life for their babies - with love, tenderness, humility and compassion - until a little after noon," said Anthony. "God is good - five babies were saved that morning!"

Incredibly, Eduardo's presence was enough to convince eight nurses in the abortuary to approach him: "The day had a dramatic ending when eight nurses from the clinic came outside to meet Eduardo!" He spoke with the nurses and gave them copies of his new Spanish language pro-life video, "Dura Realidad."

"Please pray for these precious turnarounds," Anthony asked, "and for the conversion of all clinic workers and for Eduardo - what a courageous witness and backer of courageous words with action!"

40 Days for Life, which is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through prayer, fasting, vigils and community outreach, is taking place in 170 cities in the US and Canada between September 24 and November 2 of this year.

Another Catholic Law Prof Endorses Barack Obama Despite Pro-Abortion View
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Another Catholic law professor has endorsed Barack Obama despite the fact the presidential candidate has a solid pro-abortion view. Duquesne University School of Law dean Nicholas Cafardi will likely earn the same rebuke from pro-life Catholics as has Douglas Kmiec. In an editorial appearing in the National Catholic Reporter, Cafardi contends he believes abortion is an "unspeakable evil" yet he supports Obama, who has pledged to keep abortion legal another 35 years. "Despite what some Republicans would like Catholics to believe, the list of what the church calls 'intrinsically evil acts' does not begin and end with abortion," Cafardi writes," he writes. "In fact, there are many intrinsically evil acts, and a committed Catholic must consider all of them in deciding how to vote." Cafardi also claims Obama is not actually pro-abortion, even though he wants 50 million more abortions and has promised to sign legislation that would overturn every pro-life law across the country and cause 125,000 more abortions a year. Karen Cross, the political director for National Right to Life, points to a speech Obama made before Planned Parenthood in 2007 promising to sign the so-called Freedom of Choice Act that would make the Roe decision federal law. Not only would the bill make legal abortions in all nine months of pregnancy the law of the land, it would overturn every pro-life state enacted by state legislatures. That means states across the nation could no long place even moderate, common sense limits on abortions like parental notification, banning partial-birth abortions or preventing taxpayer-funding of abortions. Planned Parenthood Continues Trashing Sarah Palin on Abortion, Rape Kit Lies
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With the vice-presidential debate coming up this week, Planned Parenthood continues to trash Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on abortion. The abortion business is also repeating the false claims that Palin somehow went after women who were victims of sexual abuse by making them pay for rape kits. Cecile Richards, president of the pro-abortion group, says that Palin and McCain would cause "a return to the dark ages" over abortion and reproductive health issues. To carry out her attack on Palin further, Richards is asking Planned Parenthood backers to sign an open letter to Palin that the group plans to feature outside the venue hosting the debate. "We're taking your message of opposition straight to St. Louis, Missouri, for the vice-presidential debate to say 'Sarah Palin is not our candidate' in a big, bold way that the candidates, the media, and the people of St. Louis won't be able to ignore," Richards says. The letter to Palin recycles pro-abortion attacks on the governor but it also includes the now-disproved rape kit controversy. "You are not our candidate because you required women in Wasilla to pay for their own medical examinations after being raped," Planned Parenthood claims. Full story at LifeNews.com.

Barack Obama Voted Against Extending Health Care to Pregnant Women, Unborn

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Barack Obama claims he is the best candidate when it comes to improving health care for Americans and he touted better health care during the first presidential debate. However, his record is blemished with a vote against extending a health care program to cover pregnant women and their unborn children. The State Children's Health Insurance (SCHIP) is a federal program that provides funds to states to provide health care services to children of low-income families. Under a Bush administration proposal, states have the option of extending that coverage to unborn children -- which automatically qualifies pregnant women for coverage as well during their pregnancy. Because this is an administrative rule and could be changed by a future president, like Obama, Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado offered an amendment earlier this year to put the rule in existing law and make helping pregnant women and children permanent. While senators from across the political spectrum -- including Democratic Sens. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Ben Nelson of Nebraska-- voted for it, Obama opposed the measure. The vote provided another clear contrast between Obama and Sen. John McCain, who supported pregnant women and their unborn children by backing the amendment. Senator Joe Biden, Obama's running mate, also voted against the health care coverage. Full story at LifeNews.com.

Congressional Bill Targeting Sex-Selection Abortions in US is Much Needed

Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- The leading group in Washington battling against the November ballot measure to legalize assisted suicide has launched its first set of radio ads. The spots feature actor Martin Sheen, a pro-life Democrat known for his role as the president in the popular television drama West Wing. "Hello, this is Martin Sheen with an urgent message about Initiative 1000," he says in the ad.
"It's a dangerous idea that could hurt low-income people who need medical care," Sheen explains. "It's a step backwards and I urge you to vote no." "Initiative 1000 would open up a loophole that health care insurers could exploit to cut payments for the disabled and the working poor -- encouraging them to use assisted suicide," Sheen says. "This is exactly the wrong direction for real health care in America." Full story at LifeNews.com

Utah Pro-Life Legislator to Introduce Abortion Ban, Personhood, Fetal Pain Bills
Salt Lake City, UT (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life member of the Utah state legislature is ready to lead the fight against abortion once it heads back into session after the November elections. Rep. Stephen Sandstrom plans on a handful of bills including one that would ban most abortions. He says he thinks the time is now to get an abortion ban in place to challenge the Supreme Court on the Roe v. Wade decision that allowed virtually unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy. "It's not a guaranteed deal, obviously," he told KSL-TV. "But if the court changes hands and we have a couple of people retire, then the door would be shut forever on a court challenge." The abortion ban would mirror the one proposed on the November ballot in South Dakota, which prohibits abortions except in cases of rape, incest, and very limited but severe health circumstances. Another bill is similar to the ballot measure Colorado voters will consider next month, in that it defines an unborn child as a human being at the moment of conception. Full story at LifeNews.com

Russia Sees 64 Percent of Its Pregnancies End in Abortion, Causing Infertility Issues
Moscow, Russia (LifeNews.com) -- Russia has long been a world leader in terms of the percentage of pregnancies that end in abortion and experts say those figures are still high. They say the abortion epidemic is leading to a problem of hundreds of thousands of women suffering from infertility. Marina Tarasova is the deputy head of the St. Petersburg Research Institute For Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. On Monday, she spoke at an international conference and explained how the use of abortion as birth control among the Russian people has led to more than 5.5 million infertile couples. She explained that, each year, more than 64 percent of pregnancies in Russia end in abortion -- a contrast with the 20 percent that end in abortion in the United States and even fewer in most European nations. Researcher showing abortion's link to infertility is plentiful and the Russian statistics bear that out. "Over the past five years, female infertility in Russia has increased by 14 percent, and over 1.5 million Russians need advanced medical technology to become pregnant and maintain a healthy pregnancy," Tarasova said. The number of infertile women in Russia is growing by 200,000 to 250,000 each year -- with the main cause complications from abortions, she said. Full story at LifeNews.com

U.S. archbishop at Vatican says Democrats becoming 'party of death'

Archbishop Burke was asked if he knew that the August Democratic National Convention in Denver featured a guest appearance by Sheryl Crow, a musician whose performance at a 2007 benefit for a Catholic children's hospital the archbishop had opposed because of her support for abortion and embryonic stem-cell research.

"That does not surprise me much," the archbishop said. "At this point the Democratic Party risks transforming itself definitely into a 'party of death' because of its choices on bioethical questions as Ramesh Ponnuru wrote in his book, 'The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts and the Disregard for Human Life.'"

Archbishop Burke said the Democratic Party once was "the party that helped our immigrant parents and grandparents better integrate and prosper in American society. But it is not the same anymore."

Pro-life Democrats are "rare, unfortunately," he said.

Tiller Patient Feared "They're Liable To Kill Me" During Botched Abortion That Hospitalized Her

September 29th, 2008

Patient S. tells from her hospital bed how she was locked in a room against her will for four hours while a raging infection nearly took her life.

Wichita, KS - A life-threatening abortion complication landed a patient of late-term abortionist George R. Tiller in the hospital last Thursday. The woman has come forward to tell of her harrowing, near-death experience at Tiller's Women's Health Care Services.

Patient S. has alleged that on Tuesday, September 23, abortionist Shelley Sella may have botched an injection into her abdomen, causing sepsis, a systemic infection that rapidly spreads throughout the body and can cause rapid death.

She also accuses Sella of misdiagnosing her pregnancy at 19 weeks, even though previous medical examinations placed her pregnancy at 23 weeks, beyond the legal limit in Kansas.

On Thursday, while sick, crying, and running a fever of 103.7°, she returned to WHCS where she was isolated in a locked room for four hours, during which time her pleas for release were ignored.

Patient S. was told that she should be quiet because she was upsetting the other women, and was threatened that unless her attitude changed, they would no longer treat her. She was also told that she would have to drive over three hours to a hospital in Kansas City where her abortion would be completed. She refused to make the trip and demanded that Tiller finish the procedure.

Patient S. observed that she continued to feel movements in her womb. Her mother was present during the removal of the baby, and observed Tiller inserting a tube into the baby's skull and removing the brains, a procedure that is illegal if the baby was still alive.

Before the final procedure, Patient S. said that she feared, "They're liable to kill me under sedation." During the procedure, Patient S. suffered an asthma attack and cardiac arrest, but was revived.

Instead of calling an ambulance, Tiller drove Patient S. to Wesley Medical Center in his personal Jeep. She feared for her safety since Tiller apparently could not see very clearly, and was verbally directed though traffic by a female employee who was with them.

She was treated and discharged from the hospital on Saturday, September 27, 2008, even though she was still in pain and feeling sick from her ordeal.

Patient S.'s experience closely resembles that of 19-year old Christin Gilbert, who died from untreated sepsis during a third-trimester abortion at WHCS on January 13, 2005.

"We have repeatedly begged the authorities in Kansas to hold Tiller accountable for the many women he had hurt just over the past few years. How many women must be maimed or killed before Tiller is brought to justice? We say it again: Tiller is a menace and we demand that he be held accountable for his dangerous, if not criminal, actions. This time, the public should not take 'no' for an answer," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

HLI Launches Campaign for Conversion of Abortionists

FRONT ROYAL, Virginia, September 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, STL, president of Human Life International, (HLI) today launched an international campaign to promote praying the St. Michael prayer after every Mass. The grassroots campaign is designed to encourage the laity to pray for St. Michael's intercession for the conversion of abortionists. It is also a call to priests and bishops to include the St. Michael prayer after the final blessing at all Masses.

"The fight against the culture of death is primarily a spiritual battle," Euteneuer said, "and Human Life International knows that with the aid of St. Michael, abortionists around the world will convert from their cooperation with evil."

Euteneuer said, "Nowhere are the words of St. Paul that 'our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens' (Ephesians 6:12), more evident or obvious than in the abortion battle."

He continued, "As a pro-life organization we are naturally concerned with the babies killed by abortion and their mothers who are ravaged by it. But we are also concerned with the eternal souls of those caught up in this evil, the abortionists, and others who promote it. We want to see them in Heaven, and as a priest that is of ultimate concern to me."

HLI is asking people to sign a pledge of support for the campaign and pray the St. Michael prayer daily, especially after each Mass, and send copies of the pledge to parishes to be inserted in the weekly bulletins.

HLI has produced St. Michael prayer cards in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. A link to sign the pledge online, information on ordering the prayer cards and the text of the prayer in 19 different languages can be found at: www.hli.org/st_michael_prayer.html.

Fr. Pavone Comment

Fr. Pavone: Pulpit Under God's Authority, Not Government's

WASHINGTON, September 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, commented today on the "Pulpit Freedom Sunday" that a group of pastors observed this past weekend, in which they spoke about the moral qualifications of candidates for public office, with a freedom that they maintain the IRS is wrongly taking from pastors.

"This effort is not about bringing politics into the pulpit; it's about getting government out of the pulpit," Fr. Pavone explained. "It should be Church authority, not government authority that determines the criteria for how pastors should address politics."

"When a preacher goes into a pulpit, he does so under the command and authority of God, to preach God's word. Now God's word cannot really be God's if the government can limit or censor it. Moreover, if preachers didn't historically have the freedom to challenge government authority, we would have neither Christianity nor the United States of America," Fr. Pavone pointed out.

"My advice to my fellow priests and pastors is simply this: Don't have a knee-jerk reaction to the actions some pastors took this weekend, simply dismissing such actions as inappropriate. Rather, think about whether you are fully exercising the freedom you already do have under the law, and think about how much you are not doing simply because you fear legal entanglements."

Some Feminists Love Abortion on Demand But Hate Governor Sarah Palin
by Joan Swirsky
Why are the retro-feminists in the left-wing media, the National Organization of Women, and the abortion lobby, among other hysterics, militating so violently against Sarah Palin? It's because they value abortion-on-demand over every other subject on earth. This "value" started in the late 1950s - before abortion became de rigueur - when the Food and Drug Administration approved the birth-control pill developed by Dr. John Rock and two collaborators. For the first time in human history, women had a measure of control over their fertility, which gave them a greater chance to pursue economic independence and escape bad marriages. But in just a few years - aided by the even-then left-wing media - feminists managed to convince a gullible public that most of the bedrocks of American life were bad. Of course, the first most-cherished tenet of the feminist movement has always been abortion-on-demand - the "right" of women to put their "interests" (and moods and convenience) before giving birth to an unwanted child. This "inconvenience" has cost over 50-million babies their rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness since the Supreme Court enacted Roe v. Wade in 1973. This "right" is heartily endorsed by Barack Obama, who has: Said that women shouldn't be "punished" with babies if they weren't in the mood to have them. Co-sponsored the "Freedom of Choice Act" (S-.1173) that would make partial-birth abortion legal again, require taxpayer funding of abortion, and invalidate all state and federal limitations on abortion, including parental-notification laws. Pastors Endorse John McCain Over Abortion to Overturn IRS Regulations
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A group of pastors issued endorsements for John McCain on Sunday morning in a concerted effort to overturn a decades-long rule prohibiting endorsements from the pulpit. The pastors are aided by a pro-life law firm, the Alliance Defense Fund, and say the rule violates their free speech rights. Pastor Luke Emrich of New Life Church in West Bend, Wisconsin told his congregation on Sunday that he supports Senator John McCain because of his pro-life position on abortion. Rev. Ron Johnson Jr. also joined in the national campaign, known as "Pulpit Freedom Sunday," and he is the senior associate pastor at Living Stones Church in Crown Point, Indina. Johnson also said abortion is the key issue in the campaign for Christian voters and highlighted the division between Obama and McCain. "If a candidate supports something that is evil and wicked from a biblical perspective," Johnson said, "then I have the right to call out the wickedness, and I have the right to say this is what this person stands for -- this is wrong." The Rev. Jody Hice of Bethlehem First Baptist Church outside of Atlanta also endorsed McCain and said he based his recommendations on McCain's opposition to abortion compared to Obama's strongly pro-abortion position. "These are not political issues," Hice said. "They are are moral issues." Full story at LifeNews.com.

Pro-life Civil Disobedience Planned at Obama DC Headquarters and in Colorado Springs on 9/29
Message: "Catholics may not in good conscience vote for Obama for President - in spite of all dissent to the contrary." Randall Terry, Founder, Operation Rescue

MEDIA ADVISORY, Sept. 28 /Christian Newswire/ -- "...it violates no aspect of Catholic teaching for a Catholic Voter to endorse, support, or vote for Barack Obama..."? Doug Kmiec, Catholic Attorney and author, Can a Catholic Support Him? (Page 36)

Statement of Randall Terry:

"The above statement is theological and morally false. Mr. Kmiec is promoting error and false teachings that are in direct contradiction to the Gospel of Life. We will do everything in our power to refute this error.

"For example, John Paul II states: 'In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to 'take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law, or vote for it'. 73, Gospel of Life

"With our federal system of government, we do not vote for laws; we vote for lawmakers who make laws in our stead. Given the history and intention of Obama to continue the legalized killing of the unborn, to vote for him is to knowingly to participate in his evil acts and intentions, and to vote for abortion itself.

"We created a new brochure for Catholic Churches, entitled: Faithful Catholic Citizenship. It is a 'voter's pro- life catechism' focusing on the teachings of John Paul II. See brochure at www.ahumbleplea.com.

"For the next 5 weeks, we will focus on the Catholic Community with a simple message: No Catholic may in good conscience vote for Obama, because of his support for Roe vs. Wade. We will hand out Faithful Catholic Citizenship at Cathedrals and Parishes, hold protests, and practice peaceful civil disobedience,: We begin in DC and Colorado Springs."

Day of Intercession dedicated to the defeat of the Abortion Law Reform Bill

Melbourne (Agenzia Fides) – There is a real threat to unborn lives and a danger to Catholic hospitals says Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne in his Pastoral Letter. The Archbishop has also called for a Day of Intercession dedicated to the defeat of the Abortion Law Reform Bill, which will be voted on this October 7 in the Legislative Assembly of the state of Victoria (southern Australia), which allows for an abortion to take place in the first 24 weeks.

The law, the Archbishop says, does not offer protection to the unborn child and neither does it offer support for "women in vulnerable positions."

The Archbishop has written a letter to the members of the Legislative Assembly encouraging them not to approve the new norm on abortion, in light of the fact that it concerns the respect of human rights, of the child and the woman.

There is also a danger for all Catholic health care services because if the law were approved, it would place all Catholic hospitals and doctors who are conscientious objectors in a serious plight, forcing them to have to go against the law in order to act according to their conscience and faith values. And this is a real problem, as the Catholic hospitals are responsible for nearly one-third of all births in Victoria.

With all this in mind, Archbishop Hart has asked Catholics to join in the Day of Intercession for Life, which will take place on October 5, on the eve of the vote in the Assembly, throughout the Archdiocese, in all the parishes and associations. There will be a Prayer Vigil presided by the Archbishop, in St. Patrick's Cathedral, at noon on Sunday, October 5, in order for all who wish to join in praying for the respect for life and for the rights of children and mothers.

Supreme Court Asked to Decide Whether Abortion Kills Human Being
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Supreme Court on Monday will decide whether or not it will hold a hearing on an appeal in a case involving an abortion practitioner who misled a woman. Abortion practitioner Sheldon Turkish told potential abortion patient Rose Acuna that her unborn baby was "nothing but some blood."
The case is heralded by some pro-life attorneys as the first chance for the Supreme Court in 35 years to decide whether abortions kills a human being. After the New Jersey Supreme Court said in November that it won't reconsider the decision it handed down in September against Acuna, her attorney filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The case involves a 1996 abortion and Acuna says Turkish misled her but the New Jersey court ruled Turkish didn't have to tell Acuna that the abortion would kill her baby. A kidney disorder made Acuna's pregnancy difficult and Turkish advised her to have an abortion. She was about six to seven weeks pregnant at the time of the abortion. According to the lawsuit, Acuna asked if "the baby was already there" and Turkish replied that it's "nothing but some blood."

California Parental Notification on Abortion Measure Gets Boost in Second Poll
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The second poll in as many days shows a plurality of California voters support Proposition 4, a ballot measure that would allow parents to know when their minor daughters are considering an abortion. The measure draws the support of 49 percent of California residents thanks in part to Latino voters. A new Field Poll of 830 likely voters finds the measure leading 49-41 percent with another 10 percent of voters undecided. Among Hispanic voters, who now account for 17 percent of all voters in the state, support for the parental notification measure jumps to 62-31 percent. That could help push the poll over the top after it lost twice in 2005 and 2006. "Latino voters are more supportive of the measure than in the past elections," Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll, said about the new survey. "The timing of the vote also helps, since Latinos make up a larger proportion of the voters in a presidential election." DiCamillo also noted that many of the undecided voters opposed the notification measure after last-minute ad campaigns by abortion advocates and that they are expected to do the same thing this time around. The Field Poll also showed that Republicans favor the measure by a 69 percent margin while 50 percent of Democrats are opposed to it. While 80 percent of conservatives back the measure, 66 percent of liberals oppose it. Full story at LifeNews.com

Australia Judge in Brisbane Criticized for Allowing Abortion on 12-Year-Old Girl
Brisbane, Australia (LifeNews.com) -- A judge in Australia is coming under heavy criticism for allowing a 12-year-old girl to have an abortion. Queensland Supreme Court Justice Margaret Wilson has ordered that doctors in the Australian state be allowed to give the young girl the dangerous abortion drug mifepristone (RU 486). The decision came in a closed-door hearing last week and the court heard how the girl in question is 18 weeks pregnant. The girl sought the abortion at a public hospital and apparently has the support of her parents. State government attorneys brought the case before the judge on behalf of the physicians and said the court had to approve the abortion because of the girl's young age. According to local media, the girl in question is mentally disabled and the court was told that she may not have a full understanding and appreciation of the situation. Although the girl was an obvious victim of sexual abuse, Judge Wilson granted the abortion request and said taking the baby's life was in the girl's best interest. Full story at LifeNews.com

READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEARhttp://www.oneyearbibleonline.com/september.asp?version=63

September 26, 2008

(Mal 3:7) For from the days of your fathers you have departed from my ordinances, and have not kept them: Return to me, and I will return to you, saith the Lord of hosts. And you have said: Wherein shall we return?

FATHER CORAPI: Education, Faith & America

In speaking with faithful Catholics all over the world for the past twenty years there is a consensus among them that the average Catholic doesn't know much about their faith. Likewise there is an overwhelming consensus that if we did, the world would be a very different place. In the United States of America we have over sixty million Catholics. If these Catholic citizens knew their faith and then voted and lived their faith, this country would be incalculably better off. In turn, so would the entire world.

In the past few months leading up to what may prove to be the most crucial presidential election in this country's history, it is outright frightening how many Catholics think they can vote for a pro-abortion candidate. As many of our good bishops have pointed out, under the current circumstances this is not possible. Abortion is the overridingly most important moral issue of our times, all others being important, but rendered irrelevant if the preeminent right—the right to life—is destroyed.

As Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, Oregon recently pointed out, clarifying the teaching of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops in their excellent pastoral letter "Faithful Citizenship," a candidate or office holder is disqualified from receiving the vote of a Catholic in good conscience if they hold a pro-abortion position. In other words pro- choice candidates under the current set of circumstances are disqualified because of their pro-death political positions. We cannot vote for them. As the Bishops of Kansas recently asserted in their excellent voter's guide, "Catholics would 'commit moral evil' by voting for a candidate who supports abortion and other intrinsically evil things. Voting is a moral act, and voting for pro-choice candidates is evil in itself. One becomes a collaborator in evil by so doing. No amount of rationalization can escape this logical and moral conclusion.

There was some confusion over this based on a statement made some time ago by Pope Benedict, who was speaking in general terms, saying that for a "proportionate reason" it would be possible to vote for such candidates. However, in the concrete situation we face, with a candidate who is pro-life, this would not be possible. No amount of "other reasons" would excuse voting for a pro-choice candidate. The Church clearly teaches that life begins at conception. As Pope John Paul II stated many times, "abortion is murder." Following logically from this, if a single abortion is murder, then 48,000,000 (the approximate number of abortions in this country since Roe v. Wade) of them is genocide. What would be the "proportionate reason" supporting such an outrage? There is none.

Lack of understanding of what the Catholic Church teaches is grossly harmful to the individual Catholic and to society in general. It is for this reason that I have always tried to promote and teach the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is a sure norm for teaching the faith, as Pope John Paul II asserted in promulgating the Catechism. "Guarding the Deposit of Faith is the mission which the Lord entrusted to His Church," are the first words of the Apostolic Constitution "Fidei Depositum." These are the words the Holy Father used to introduce us to the Catechism.

For this reason we are making my series "The Teaching of Jesus Christ" more and more available through television, radio, and the lowest prices ever offered for DVD and CD versions. Ignorance of the Faith can prove fatal—for individuals and for nations. Learning our faith is the best investment we can make. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is the very best way to do this.

May God bless you, each one, and may God bless America in this time of national crisis.

Ladder of Divine Ascent excerpt: Step 8- "On Freedom from Anger and on Meekness"

10. As a hard stone with sharp corners has ll its sharpness and hard formation dulled by knocking and rubbing against other stones, and is made round, so in the same way, a sharp and curt soul, by living in community and mixing with hard, hot-tempered men, undergoes one of two things: either it cures its wound by its patience, or by retiring it will certainly discover its weakness, its cowardly flight making this clear to it as in a mirror.

Right to Life in Spain

EUROPE/SPAIN - "Right to Life" platform group formed to fight law proposed by the government: "a fight to save human lives and for the survival of our society"

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – On September 23, HazteOir presented the platform group "Derecho a vivir" ("Right to Life") in Madrid. The group has been formed in order to fight against the approval of the abortion law being proposed by the government (see Fides 9/9/2008). There was also a Committee of Experts presented as an alternative to the Committee "Aido" that was created by the Department of Equality and whose purpose is to use propaganda to justify the promotion of abortion through this new law. The committee is made up of 16 lawyers, gynecologists, professors of biomedical science, and psychologists, who will produce a series of reports which they will present to the Government and members of Parliament in order to spread awareness among lawmakers and society, with the clarity needed, the reality of abortion and its consequences. The platform groups' spokesman, Dr. Gador Joya says that the initiative is a response to the Government's refusal to include a representative with a pro-life perspective on the team of experts from the Department of Equality.
In the report issued by the new association, they affirm that "Spain's law abandons the woman in her plight and presents abortion as if it were her only solution. Every 'abortion law' is a terrible act of hypocrisy against women, and a despicable crime against the children that it harms." They also decried the fact that "in Spain, pregnant women are not offered information or social help in these difficult situations, and yet there is funding available for them to go and abort."

Ignacio Arsuaga, President of HazteOir, has written a letter encouraging all to join in this initiative in favor of life and against abortion. He also affirms the fact that in order to stop this law on abortion availability in Spain, "we are going to spread awareness and mobilize the majority of Spain's citizens. We are going to act in three areas: Internet, the street, and thoughts."

"It is a fight to save human beings," the letter says, "boys and girls whose survival depends on the initiative, time, and effort that we are capable of dedicating to this task. It is also a fight to save the women that society tries to convince, saying that abortion is the only solution. They are women who, if we do nothing to stop them, will suffer the terrible pains of post-abortion syndrome. We are also fighting for the survival of our society, because a community that allows – and even promotes – the murder of its most vulnerable citizens, is a community headed towards extinction."

In order to reach this goal, the President of HazteOir is making a campaign, asking that everyone that can, participate, "united to the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of citizens who are aware and committed to fight for the human being, will become a tool for communication" capable of winning out in the end. "Thus, we count on your support in taking the initial steps in reestablishing the right to life in Spain,"

Pro-Life Apostle Still Saving Babies Behind Bars

 By John-Henry Westen

TORONTO, September 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The second part of the trial of Linda Gibbons for protesting outside a Toronto abortion center took place Tuesday at College Park Court with pro-life supporters in attendance to encourage her.  The trial took most of the day and the judge is to render his decision in the case next Tuesday, September 30 at 2:30pm.

Talking to Show the Truth leader Rosemary Connell from prison on Sunday, Gibbons noted that a piece of pro-life literature sent to her in a letter saved a baby's life. "Linda said women will often sit down with her as she opens her mail," Connell told LifeSiteNews.com. "A woman watching her one day last week saw the pamphlet and told Linda that she was pregnant and planning an abortion because 'the CAS would take the child anyway'."

Connell concluded, "Linda talked to her and gave her the pamphlet. The next morning she told Linda that she had changed her mind and is letting the baby live"

Fr. Tom Euteneuer: St. Michael Prayer Campaign and Ecuador

  Spirit & Life®
"The words I spoke to you are spirit and life." (Jn 6:63)

St. Michael Prayer Campaign and Ecuador
Fr. Tom Euteneuer

Dear Friends of Life,

On Monday, the Feast of the Archangels, our Prayer Campaign to St. Michael for the conversion of abortionists kicks into full gear. It coincides providentially with the CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM that is happening in ECUADOR on Sunday. As you may remember, this referendum will legalize abortion in this presently abortion-free Catholic country if the people approve the new Constitution. I urge you to pray generous prayers to St. Michael the Archangel that Ecuador will choose life!

In the piece below, my co-worker, Joseph Meaney, explains the whole rationale behind our prayer campaign. Please join us now and in the future for prayers to the Prince of the Heavenly Host, to vanquish the abortion demon and bring conversion to all who perpetrate the crime of abortion on humanity.

St. Michael the Archangel, Defend us in Battle!
By Joseph Meaney

Never have these words been more appropriate than today. We live in a world that refuses to prioritize basic values such as the worship of God and respecting the right to life of our most defenseless neighbors, preborn children.

The Feast of the Archangels, Michael, Raphael and Gabriel, which is celebrated on September 29th, is an excellent opportunity to examine our lives. All the angels, but especially St. Michael, remind us of God's infinite goodness and the spiritual warfare that surrounds us at all times. How often do we invoke St. Michael and our guardian angel for protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil?

It is abundantly clear from the pro-life situation internationally that a great spiritual battle is raging. The legalization of abortion in the land of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico City, is a direct challenge to the Patroness of Life. In countries like Lithuania that are attempting to roll back their pro-abortion laws, the frenzied defenders of death can only be described as diabolical.

Human Life International (HLI) has seen the abundant fruits that come from the conversion of those heavily involved in the sin of abortion. Dr. Stoyan Adasevic of Serbia committed thousands of abortions before a dramatic change of heart made him a witness to the preciousness of life. His conversion came about in this way: He was aborting the baby of his own niece when she began to bleed to death. Dr. Adasevic made a promise to God that if she survived, he would stop aborting. Amazingly, they were able to stop her blood loss almost immediately. Now he travels around Serbia and central and eastern Europe proclaiming the Gospel of Life with HLI's assistance. Such conversion stories are seen wherever HLI works, but we need more prayers to pull all the lost souls out of the darkness.

That is why we see an urgent need for a prayer campaign to bring about the conversion of the agents of death. Pope Leo XIII composed the powerful St. Michael Prayer to counter the greatest threats to the Church. Today the culture of death is looming over our world. The total number of victims of surgical abortion is now counted in the billions. This is an almost unimaginable evil.

Join with us, the staff, and worldwide collaborators of HLI as we offer up the St. Michael Prayer daily for the conversion of abortionists. Many parishes and communities have continued or re-established the venerable practice of reciting the St. Michael Prayer after Mass. If your parish is currently doing this, or decides to do so, please indicate this by using the appropriate check box on the pledge form, as we are documenting this fact.

We have distributed over 600,000 St. Michael prayer cards already. Order them online for prayer groups and parishes. (The cards are free - we only charge for shipping.) Our hope is that millions will join us from all continents. The petition to ask our priests and bishops to lead the faithful in prayer to St. Michael after Mass is a great opportunity to counter the culture of death. To sign the pledge, click here.

May God bless you and your families in your spiritual commitment to creating a culture of life!

Mormon Physician Comments on Paul VI's Encyclical

"Humanae Vitae": A Compelling Argument

By Robert Conkling

ROME, SEPT. 25, 2008 (Zenit.org).- For a non-Catholic, Pope Paul VI's encyclical "Humanae Vitae" is not important because it is the Church speaking, but rather because it offers a compelling argument, says Mormon physician Dr. Joe Stanford.

Stanford, a family physician and a researcher in the Creighton Model FertilityCare system and NaPro Technology, was a speaker at the 27th annual meeting of the American Academy of FertilityCare Professionals, held this summer in Rome.

Stanford, a professor in the department of family and preventive medicine at the University of Utah, spoke to ZENIT about his take on "Humanae Vitae," as well as the role faith plays in his medical practice.

Catholic Relief Services personnel support Obama, Emily's List

September 25, 2008

Lauded by nonprofit watchdogs for its efficiency, Catholic Relief Services performs the corporal works of mercy on a massive scale. But articles earlier this year in Our Sunday Visitor and Catholic World Report raised troubling questions about the US bishops’ relief agency’s cooperation in providing information about condoms, resulting in an investigation by the US bishops’ doctrine and pro-life committees. An analysis of federal election records shows that Jennifer Nazaire – Catholic Relief Services’ representative in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea – has donated $1,100 to Emily’s List since 2005. Emily’s List’s sole purpose is to elect candidates who support legalized abortion to office. According to the pro-abortion Center for Reproductive Rights, abortion is banned in the Central African Republic and permitted in limited circumstances in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. In addition, all eight of the federal election donors in the 2007-8 election cycle who identified themselves as Catholic Relief Services employees made contributions to the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama. Most prominent among them is Mark Palmer, the executive vice President and chief financial officer of the $597-million agency.

Pro-Life Groups Announce Demonstrations At Vice Presidential Debate In St. Louis

September 25th, 2008

St. Louis, MO - Operation Rescue and the Christian Defense Coalition have announced plans for demonstrations surrounding the Vice-Presidential debate to be held in St. Louis on October 2.

The groups, which are coordinating with Defenders of the Unborn, Concerned Women for America, and other pro-life groups, have planned events that will both support pro-life Republican vice presidential nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin, and stand in opposition to the pro-abortion Democratic vice presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Biden.

"Governor Palin has energized the faith and pro-life constituencies like no other," said Rev. Pat Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition Director. "This is an untapped resource I think is extraordinary."

"Gov. Palin is a ray of hope that God is beginning to answer our prayers for the leadership of our nation," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "She has helped vault the plight of the pre-born to the front burner of American politics. Sen. Biden, on the other hand, is an enemy of Life and should be exposed and rebuked."

"She is a pro-life candidate. All Christians must band together to elect her to the White House," said Mary Maschmeier of the St. Louis group Defenders of the Unborn.

Events scheduled so far include the following:

Rally and Prayer in preparation for the Vice-Presidential Debate
October 1, 2008 at 7:00 PM
IL Monastero- On the campus of St. Louis University
3010 Olive Street, St. Louis

Prayer and Prayer During the Debate
October 2, 2008 from 5-9 PM
Skinker and Forest Park Blvd., one block from Forest Park across from Lindell Blvd.
