Dear Friends for Life,

A new Brazilian poll is strongly anti-abortion. In a major national poll, 74% of respondents in Brazil state that they are opposed to abortion. 23% support legalizing. We note that Brazil's president, Lula da Silva has been attempting to weaken Brazil's pro-life laws. As part of this, the government has been distributing free the abortifacient, morning-after pills.

Believe it or not, Planned Parenthood is demanding sexual rights for small children. In a new report, "Stand and Deliver," the International Planned Parenthood Federation demands, "comprehensive sexuality education" for children as young as 10 years. "Young people are sexual beings and are entitled to sexual education which promotes individual wellbeing and the advancement of broad social and public health goals." Therefore, "sex education must be mandatory in school and the government should insist on this." IPPF says, "This is necessary to encourage young people's self esteem, thoughtful decision making and negotiating skills, and they should be helped to develop satisfying and pleasurable sexual lives." Therefore, they should have unrestrained access to sex education and services.

Korea finally has birth subsidies. But is it too late? To remedy the alarming birth dearth in South Korea, families with more than two children will now receive state subsidies. Businesses will be required to set up day care centers and single parents will be able to be enrolled in state-sponsored free child care services. So far other efforts to increase the birth rate have failed.

God Bless,

Jerry Novotny, OMI

(FOCUS ON ASIA): "Authorities in Asia seek to sterilise their populations" - The Chinese state media has reported that authorities have detained 1,300 people in order to sterilise them. This is part of a 20-day campaign to sterilise almost 10,000 people suspected of planning to break the strict Chinese family-planning laws. Such sterilisation campaigns are not limited to China. Thousands of women in Uzbekistan experience forced sterilations. These sterilisations are state-ordered and irreversible.

ITEM #1. Last Minute Backroom Negotiations Leave Witnesses Baffled at UN Commission on Population and Development

Observers were left scratching their heads trying to figure out what went wrong in the final few hours of the United Nations (UN) Commission Population and Development (CPD), which ended last Friday at UN headquarters in New York. After three days of marathon negotiating sessions, the UN Commission on Population and Development came together in the final plenary to adopt an eight-page text on "Health, Morbidity, Mortality and Development." Despite reassurances from governments that controversial language regarding "sexuality education" and "reproductive rights" would not be included in the final document, in the final few hours of the conference, behind closed doors, the controversial language came back into the document.

ITEM #2. Top Abortion Law Firm Says Government Funded Abortion is a Human Right

A top abortion-rights law firm recently released its conclusion that the last decade of international legal trends indicate that abortion is not only an international human right, but that government funding is part of that right. They claim that the "vicious" health care debate in the United States over abortion funding shows that the U.S. is flouting international law.

ITEM #3. Euthanasia Requests Skyrocket in Belgium; Highest Among Young Cancer Victims

After being legalised eight years ago, euthanasia is being committed more and more often in Belgium, according to a recent study by the Flemish-speaking Free University of Brussels (Vrije Universiteit Brussel or VUB). The number of requests for euthanasia has almost tripled since 2003, when 235 patients reportedly asked to be killed.

ITEM #4. Religion Good for You; Reduces Teen Pregnancies, Too

The Institute launched the campaign to coincide with Easter. Commenting on the project, Iona Institute director David Quinn said, "This campaign is unprecedented. Nothing like it has ever taken place in Ireland, or anywhere else that we know of. Its aim is to present a positive image of religion". "There are now a lot of scientific studies", he continued, "showing that religious practise has numerous beneficial effects. The aim of the campaign is to let people know about this".

ITEM #5. Pope Benedict To Push Through With Britain Visit Despite Condom Insult

The memo made fun of the Catholic Church's stand on several issues such as abortion, homosexuality and contraception... The memo suggested that Britain should asked Pope Benedict to bless an abortion clinic, officiate over a gay wedding and even launch a Benedict brand of condom.

ITEM #6. UK Woman's Sudden Death Linked to Pill

A UK bank worker who took oral contraceptives for ten years died from a blood clot that the drug apparently caused. Jenna Morris of Poulton, Wirral, died after deep-vein thrombosis developed in her legs and spread to her lungs. Before she collapsed, Miss Morris complained of shooting pains in her legs and within hours was found dead by her mother Christine at her home in Merseyside. A post-mortem showed she died of a blood clot, possibly caused by the contraceptive pills she'd been taking since she was a teenager.

ITEM #7. Sweden Permits Passive Euthanasia

Halting life-support at the request of a patient is legal, Swedish health authorities said Monday, clearing the way for doctors to agree to a heavily disabled woman's request to be allowed to die.

"A patient who wishes to discontinue treatment has a right to do so. The condition is that he or she understands the information provided by the doctor and the consequences of his or her decision," the National Board of Health and Welfare said in a statement.

ITEM #8. Economic Costs of Induced Abortion

The EUROPOP data (2004) shows that "previous induced abortions were significantly associated with preterm delivery and the risk of preterm birth increased with the number of abortions." More than 50 published studies to date, from more than twenty countries, show that induced abortion is significantly associated with preterm birth. Many large studies involving hundreds of thousands of cases show the risk of preterm birth increased with increasing numbers of abortions.

ITEM #10. The New Tower of Babel

The top several human embryologists in the world are authors of Human Embryology textbooks. It is understandable that they do not want to engage in polemics for fear of hurting their book sales. However, the amount of fake science being foisted on the public is reaching crisis proportion. These authors must now speak out and bring reason and truth back into the public discourse. In 1989 I predicted that Human Embryology would be rewritten according to political correctness. My prediction has come true. Babel has come to the world of science, and, in particular, to the world of Human Embryology.

ITEM #11. Wetzstein: Sounding alarm on gonorrhea

"We are on the verge of a highly untreatable gonorrhea epidemic," he writes. ... Gonorrhea, once in decline, has thoroughly rebounded, with more than 336,000 cases reported in 2008. It disproportionately affects young people and blacks. Untreated gonorrhea increases risk for HIV infection and can lead to infertility, among other undesirable outcomes.

Comment: So - this is death with dignity -burial like human waste. While the treatment of their victims is shocking, that Dignitas has done this does not surprise me. After all, they are in the business of killing human beings - they are just like criminals who kill for whatever reason and dispose of their victims like garbage in secret. How is it possible for Dignitas to have any respect for human remains. And where are the relatives of the dead? -Cheryl, CHN

Kansas House Fails Veto Override - Votes to Enable Illegal Abortionists

TOPEKA, Kan., April 30 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Kansas House of Representatives today failed in a bid to override Gov. Mark Parkinson's veto of HB 2115, which would have provided new reporting standards for late-term abortions. The vote of 82-4 fell just two votes shy of the 84 votes needed to override.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman issued the following statement in response:

This bill was falsely portrayed as a law that would interfere with a woman's abortion decision. In truth, this law had nothing to do with women and everything to do with insuring that abortionists are complying with already established law. If the laws cannot be enforced, they are worthless.

Parkinson's veto was a vote for illegal late-term abortions. Each of the 40 votes that supported the veto was a vote for illegal late-term abortions.

With their votes, Parkinson and his 40 cohorts in the House have defied the will of the majority of the people who supported this common-sense law. They have now given tacit approval for criminal acts and anarchy, and have issued an open invitation to unscrupulous abortionists across the nation to come to Kansas where abortion laws will not be enforced. By doing so, they have endangered the lives of women and the viable babies our laws were enacted to protect.

We will do all we can to make sure the people of Kansas remember this shameful vote the next time these people appear on the ballot.

Fr. Thomas Euteneuer: Fatherless

  Spirit & Life®
"The words I spoke to you are spirit and life." (Jn 6:63)
Human Life International e-Newsletter
Volume 05, Number 16 | Friday, April 30, 2010

As the Year of the Priest slowly draws to a close, I am very happy to announce that HLI is now the exclusive publisher for the widely acclaimed Catholic novel by Brian J. Gail, Fatherless - "a book dedicated to priests in the Year of the Priest".

But this book was not written just for priests: There is something to be found in this book for everyone, in every walk of life. Why? Because it takes on the pervasive moral issues of our day....contraception, adultery, pornography, demonic influence and more. This book provides a realistic and up-close look at what happens to a culture that is left spiritually "Fatherless". I am especially encouraged by the way it is being received by college students and young married couples.

Fatherless is the first volume of what the author has dubbed the "American Tragedy in Trilogy". It will be followed later this year by the highly anticipated sequel, Motherless, and finally (next year) Childless.

What is so special about
Fatherless? This novel is the first of its kind. Upon reviewing Fatherless, the Catholic News Agency described Brian J. Gail as a "Catholic author writing to change a generation." With the impact of this book, he is doing just that.

As a cradle Catholic, the author brings his profound grasp of the Faith along with his experience as a former semi-pro athlete, Fortune 500 senior executive, and entrepreneur to this Catholic novel, pulling the reader in while informing and catechizing through the lives and dialogue of its characters.

In life, we cannot always understand what God is preparing us to do in order to further His Kingdom. At age 20, Brian Gail was viewed as a top baseball prospect for the Major Leagues. It was said that he had a natural release that produced an exceptional "power and velocity" rarely seen in pitching. An unfortunate injury ended his hopes for the draft and permanently altered his course in life. Yet today, with hindsight one can now see how the experience he gained in the life God laid before him is drawing more souls to a closer understanding of God's perfect plan for us. The fruits of
Fatherless reveal that God has also blessed Brian Gail with a "natural release" of storytelling in his unique style that carries a "power and velocity" to move hearts that is rarely seen in catechesis.

I was honored to endorse
Fatherless as soon as I finished reading it:
"In the Catholic novel Fatherless, author Brian J. Gail takes dead aim at the pervasive denials and chronic weaknesses that afflict men of every age, but especially men of the post-Pill generation. I think the greatest contribution of Mr. Gail's book is the honest presentation of real-life scenarios of how much damage the Pill has caused men and their relationships with women. No one thinks that the Pill is a man's issue, but Gail shatters that denial with his insightful rendering of the accounts of woe that follow in the train of the poison Pill. All men, not just Christians, need to read this and weep (in repentance) and then get up and make a difference in the world by taking on themselves once again the role of the virtuous man, father and warrior."
Dr. Janet Smith, renowned speaker about the destructive effects of the Pill, had this to say about Fatherless:
"...The research alone that went into Fatherless is phenomenal....This fast pace thriller provides amazing insight into the struggles of a young priest challenged by laity to deepen his commitment to the well as the difficulties experienced by young families trying to live their faith in a hostile culture....I enjoyed it immensely."
Other endorsements from Judie Brown, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, Christopher West, the late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, and others can be found here.

Fatherless is a unique new tool and a perfect fit in HLI's mission to carry out the evangelization of the Gospel of Life. Reading this book enlightens the reader to both the physical damage to the body and the spiritual harm to souls wrought by the Pill.

Fatherless is now being read in seminaries, book clubs, schools, and by young couples! This is why we are so excited about Fatherless, and why it is now close to becoming a Catholic Best Seller.

I am making this special outreach to you, our supporters, asking you to help us to spread the word:
Fatherless is a wonderful book to share with your spouse, your friends, your grown children, and your parish priest.

Letter after letter from inspired readers reveal a consistent theme: that
Fatherless helps those in the dark to better understand their Faith, and those who already understand it, to fall more in love with it.

Find out more about
Fatherless, including how to purchase it, here.

And please join me in asking for the intercession of our Blessed Mother in converting hearts away from the contraception mentality and toward opening hearts and minds to the Truth.

Florida the Latest State to Opt Out of Taxpayer-Funded Abortion

Florida the Latest State to Opt Out of Taxpayer-Funded Abortion with Help from Americans United for Life

WASHINGTON, April 30 /Christian Newswire/ -- Florida just became the fourth state to pass legislation opting-out of taxpayer-funded abortion provisions established by the new federal health care reform law.

Florida's legislation ensures that insurance plans that cover abortions and participate in new health care exchanges cannot receive tax dollars.

"The right to life is fundamental to all that we do, and this ensures that taxpayer dollars are not hijacked to fund abortions. Thanks to Americans United for Life for helping to make this a reality," said Florida State Representative Matthew Gaetz.

Florida legislators used the "Abortion-Mandate Opt-Out Act" drafted by Americans United for Life as a model to draft this bill. AUL would like to recognize Florida Rep. Matthew Gaetz for his tireless work in getting this bill passed.

The bill now goes to Florida Governor Charlie Crist for signature.

Legislatures in Arizona, Tennessee, and Mississippi have already passed similar bills.

AUL has been in contact with elected leaders and groups in 28 states on opting-out of the abortion mandate.

Abortion Capital, Pt. 3: “A baby came out and it was moving.”

This is part three of a five part series "Abortion Capital" delving into the business of lucrative late-term abortions in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  • Read Abortion Capital, Pt. 1: The Wild, Wild West
  • Read Abortion Capital, Pt. 2: "Am I Killing? Yes, I am. I know that"
  • Albuquerque, NM – In March, it was announced that Curtis Boyd, an elderly Texas abortionist, was providing dangerous abortions throughout the latest stages of pregnancy at his Southwestern Women's Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico. That seemed the perfect place for Boyd to establish himself as the late-term abortion "go-to" man in the wake of the death of George Tiller, who had dominated the lucrative late-term abortion market. The state was liberal and had few laws that would hinder his newly expanded business. Late-term abortions are long, complex procedures fraught with risks. If Boyd was going to do large numbers of them, he would need help.

In September, 2009, Boyd hired two abortionists with experience in late-term abortions, Shelley Sella and Susan Robinson. Both had been employed by Tiller in Wichita, Kansas, prior to the closure of his clinic. There, at what had been the world's largest late-term abortion clinic, they were responsible for well over half of all abortions done in the U.S. after 24 weeks.

    Troubled Career

Shelley Sella, 52, was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel. She received her education at the liberal University of Wisconsin in Madison, and at the Sackler School of Medicine in Ramat Aviv, Israel. She received her original medical license in 1988.

Sella's first real employment began at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, during which time she also moonlighted at a large community clinic catering to the Hispanic population.

Sella had a troubled career with Kaiser. In December, 1996, Sella was listed as the attending physician during second trimester botched abortion. Her patient, a 28-year old woman who was 16 weeks pregnant, suffered a perforated uterus and other complications as a result of the abortion. A civil suit was filed and later settled out of court for $25,000.

In October, 2000, Sella again found herself in civil court. She was accused of negligent management of a labor and delivery when a patient's uterus spontaneously ruptured, resulting in a dead baby. Kaiser settled out of court for $500,000.

One month after that lawsuit was filed, Sella left Kaiser under a cloud and hired on as an abortionist at Planned Parenthood of Shasta Diablo, in Concord, California, where she continues to work. Since then, Sella has become a "circuit riding" abortionist that currently splits her time between Planned Parenthood, Pregnancy Consultation Center in Sacramento, and Boyd's Southwestern Women's Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

    Radical Leftist Ideology

Sella has been a financial contributor to a radical California pro-abortion group called ACCESS, Women's Health Rights Coalition. This group's stated goals are to prevent women from patronizing pro-life crisis pregnancy centers and insure greater access to abortion services beyond 20 weeks, or the fifth month of pregnancy and beyond.

Sella is a lesbian who was married to her female lover, Julie Litwin, in a civil marriage service in San Francisco, CA, on Valentine's Day, 2004, in the presence of Litwin's son, who was seven years old at the time. The Sella-Litwin "marriage" was one of dozens of highly-publicized gay civil ceremonies performed in San Francisco in early 2004. Courts later ruled that those "marriages" would not be recognized by the State.

Ironically, Litwin is a certified midwife, a profession that is ironically antithetical to Sella's abortion career.

Sella gained experience in late-term abortions during her eight years of employment at Women's Health Care Services, (WHCS), in Wichita. There, Sella continued to be troubled with botched abortions and other allegations.

    Michelle Armesto-Berge

In September, 2007, a former Sella abortion patient came forward and testified before a joint interim legislative committee about her abortion experience. The woman, Michelle Armesto-Berge, told the committee about her hair-raising experience during a coerced second-trimester abortion done by Sella in May, 2003. Armesto-Berge was 18-years old and in her 25th week of pregnancy when her mother coerced her into an abortion that she did not want. Medical records revealed that an injection that was meant to stop her baby's heart had been botched by Sella and had to be re-administered, causing Armesto-Berge additional mental anguish.

complaint was filed by Operation Rescue President Troy Newman against Sella and her employer, George Tiller in October, 2007, on behalf of Armesto-Berge. The complaint alleged that Sella began the abortion process on Armesto-Berge before consent was obtained. Because Armesto-Berge was late and missed the appointment with the second physician that was required to confirm the medical necessity of all abortions on viable babies after 22 weeks gestation, the complaint alleges that Sella misrepresented the 25-week old baby as being "non-viable."

While Sella's Kansas medical license shows "no derogatory information on file," Sella told the New Mexico Medical Board in her license application that the Kansas Disciplinary Panel "found that a handwritten note for surgical procedures was not legible and insufficient." The Panel asked that Sella complete a record keeping course and start dictating operative procedures. She complied with the recommendations and the case was quietly closed.

    35 Week Baby Murder?

But the most shocking allegation against Sella came from a former Tiller employee who came forward in April, 2008, and told Operation Rescue that a baby at 35 weeks gestation was born alive and intentionally stabbed to death by Sella.

Tina David was a licensed practical nurse who often assisted with the late-term abortions. David contacted Troy Newman and told him that she wanted to speak with him about her time at WHCS. David was interviewed by Newman and Cheryl Sullenger. (Listen to the audio clip.) The following is a partial transcript of that conversation:

DAVID: Well, my job, like I said, was hold the leg …
    SULLENGER: Uh-huh.
DAVID: And count the parts, if it was in pieces.
    SULLENGER: Right.
    NEWMAN: Right.
DAVID: And this was…hmmm, maybe 35 weeks?
    NEWMAN: Um-hum.
    SULLENGER: That's pretty big.
DAVID: Yeah. Yeah. It was – It was a big baby.
    SULLENGER: Uh-huh.
DAVID: And…baby came out, and it was moving. I don't know if it was alive or if it was
    nerves…I don't – I have no clue.
    SULLENGER: Um-hum.
DAVID: Then Dr. Sella looked up right away at me and took a utensil and stabbed it – right
here – [indicating the left rib section] and twisted, and then it didn't move anymore.
    NEWMAN: Oh, my goodness!
DAVID: Yeah, and I don't remember—because usually we did the injection.

David could not explain why the baby was born alive since abortions that late in the pregnancy usually begin with a fatal injection into the baby's heart. However, the Armesto-Berge case showed that sometimes the first injection is not always successful.

David told Newman that after her interview with Operation Rescue she spoke with some of her former associates at WHCS. Soon after, she stopped returning Newman's calls.

"Ms. David gave us a very specific eye-witness account about the incident," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "At 35 weeks, there is no doubt about viability. This is murder in anybody's book."

Newman reported the incident to the police, who opened a murder investigation against Sella. A complaint was filed with the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts asking for the suspension of Sella's medical license and the immediate closure of WHCS.

Unfortunately, under questioning by police, Tina David recanted her story. She would only say that she "didn't want to get involved."

"We still believe that the original story that Tina David told us was true based on the fact that we were able to confirm the veracity of nearly everything else she told us. Unfortunately, without Tina, we could never prove it. WHCS had an incinerator onsite where the remains of the baby were cremated. The only physical evidence that may have convicted Sella of murder literally went up in smoke," said Newman.

If David had stuck to her story, it may have saved another abortion patient from the worst experience of her life.

    Patient S.

Twenty-three year old Patient S. had been under routine obstetrical care when she decided to abort her baby due to involvement in an abusive relationship. According to her last menstrual period and ultrasounds that she had received, she was 23 weeks pregnant at the time of her abortion, which she began on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. (Read her full story.)

However, she believed that WHCS misdiagnosed her as being only 19 weeks – a difference of an entire month of gestation. According to Kansas law, at 22 weeks, a second physician must concur that the abortion is medically necessary. Patient S. never saw a second physician.

Sella began the abortion on Patient. S. by giving her an injection digoxin into her abdomen, which is meant to stop the baby's heart. Apparently something went wrong with the injection, because Patient S. began feeling sick. She was sent home for the day.

On Thursday, while shaky, sick, and running a fever of 103.7°, she returned to WHCS. According to Patient S., George Tiller, not Sella, completed the abortion, during which Patient S. suffered an asthma attack, respiratory distress, and cardiac arrest. She was revived and hospitalized. She was later treated for a painful yeast infection on her face that another doctor said came from the use of a dirty oxygen mask during her abortion. Patient S.'s mother was present during the abortion and told pro-lifers that she believed that the baby was still alive at the time of the abortion delivery process. If true, that would have made the abortion illegal under the Federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003.

A complaint was filed with the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, which found that Sella did not violate the "standard of care" for her part in Patient S.'s ordeal. With Tiller's death, plans to file a civil suit have been dropped.

"We have three reported incidents where Sella allegedly botched a critical part of the late-term abortion process, leading to major complications each time, yet she has managed to escape responsibility for this," said Newman.

"It is important for the public to know the history here so women can be warned and protected, and so that watchdog groups and authorities can be vigilant. It's only a matter of time before Sella is involved in abortion complications in New Mexico similar to what we have already seen – or worse. It's not a case of 'if, but 'when.'"

"Hundreds of thousands of patients are killed in the world each year in this manner, and no police or district attorney will act to investigate or prosecute."

These are the alarming words of Ron Panzer, founder and executive director of Hospice Patients Alliance, an organization dedicated to preserving the original mission of hospice care and exposing the pervasive problem of "quiet euthanasia" in the hospice industry.

Abortion Capital, Part 2: “Am I killing? Yes, I am. I know that.”

This is part two of the five part series "Abortion Capital" delving into the lucrative late-term abortions in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Albuquerque, NM – At age 73, Curtis Boyd is old enough to know better. Having committed thousands of illegal abortions in the days prior to Roe v. Wade, Boyd has, in recent months, positioned himself as the new late-term abortion kingpin in the wake of the murder of George R. Tiller last year.

Boyd is a mousy, white-haired wisp of a man who was born in Texas and raised in a Christian home. Early in his life he felt the call to preach, and became an ordained Baptist minister. But fundamental Christian morals did not permanently stick with Boyd. In the sixties he decided to expand his horizons. He left the Church and began a back-alley abortion business in Athens, Texas. Eventually the truth came out about Boyd's back-alley enterprise to the shock of the small rural community. He was forced out of Athens and moved to Dallas where he continued to ply his illegal abortion trade.

Women came to him in droves, according to Boyd's account. He knew it was possible that he could be arrested and jailed, but he thought he knew better than the law.

I thought the law needed to be changed, the service needed to be provided, and I was going to do it understanding the risk that I was taking, which may have included going to prison. That's the way a social activist needs to think. Deciding to disobey a law is not something you take lightly.

In those days, the big fear was someone would either file charges against me or I would have some major complication or patient death. I knew that every patient I saw had the potential to not only take my medical license, but to put me in prison.

People thought I was dealing drugs because there were so many of these young people coming from college and university campuses…They knew something was going on, because all these people were coming and many of them had out-of-county license tags. Was I supplying them with some sort of drugs? Fewer suspected that the people were coming for abortions.

There were never any charges filed because I was not dealing drugs. And fortunately no woman ever told why she was coming to see me or filed any complaint with the police. But they did keep me under surveillance. I'd see them parked down the street. They'd just sit there watching.

In 1973, when Roe v. Wade decriminalized abortion, Boyd was relieved. His days of looking over his shoulder were over. Now, he could openly do abortions, and he was proud to do so. He established the first abortion clinic in Texas, and later expanded his business to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

    Experimental abortions

Boyd was a founding member of the National Abortion Federation, an association of abortion clinics that has become infamous for having more than their fair share of filthy conditions, botched abortions, abortion deaths, and other violations.

He is known for his invention of new second-trimester abortion techniques. He experimented on his patients trying to develop pain management protocols and discover ways to reduce the risks of abortion surgeries.

"I shudder to think of what the women had to endure that suffered through Boyd's ghoulish 'pain management' experimentation or his development of new surgical techniques," said Newman. "We wouldn't experiment like that on animals."

Religious Pretenses Cover "Works of Darkness"

To this day, Boyd attempts to couch his justification for decades in the abortion business with religious pretenses. But Boyd, in Christian terms, is apostate having fallen away from the truth of the Bible to embrace the unorthodox teachings of the Unitarian Universalist Church that are considered heretical by the standards of most Christian denominations.

Boyd worked with the Clergy Consultation for Problem Pregnancies, and later with the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice to give women seeking abortions the false sense that God somehow approves of their decisions to take the lives of their innocent babies.

"It is an interesting thing that so many abortionists try to justify their actions in religious terms," said Newman. "Somehow they need to think God approves of them and what they are doing. Deluding themselves is probably the only way they are able to sleep at night. Deep down in their hearts, unless they are completely reprobate, they have to know that what they are doing is wrong. Boyd admits as much."

Boyd raised eyebrows recently when he stated during an interview that he understands that he is killing.

"Am I killing? Yes, I am. I know that."

He says he prays for his abortion victims.

"I'll ask that the spirit of this pregnancy returns to God with love and with understanding."

"I wish Boyd had actually studied the Bible a little closer when he was a Baptist, because clearly God says that the shed blood of the innocent cries out to God for vengeance that belongs to God alone. In fact, according to Proverbs chapter six, the hands that shed innocent blood are among six things that God says He hates. The Bible also teaches that we should have nothing to do with the unfruitful works of darkness, but should rather expose them. I can't think of anything that qualifies better as an 'unfruitful work of darkness' than taking the life of an innocent baby in the womb," said Newman.

"Boyd may find himself in for a rude awakening when he finally faces his Maker and is required to give an account for his life."

    Vanessa Preston

For years Boyd operated what was known as the "Fairmont Center" in Dallas, which was the site of numerous abortion protests as well as abortion tragedies.

On January 22, 1980, Vanessa Preston arrived at Boyd's Fairmont mill for a second-trimester abortion. According to the RealChoice blog, which documents cases of abortion abuse, Preston was the wife of a local minister who was accompanied to the abortion clinic by her husband and young son. During the Dilation and Extraction abortion, Vanessa began to seize and suffered cardiac arrest.

Boyd and his staff called for an ambulance and began CPR, resuscitating Vanessa only to have her slip into cardiac arrest again before the ambulance could arrive. They again applied CPR until emergency crews arrived and stabilized her for transport to the hospital.

    RealChoice gives the following account:

About 40 minutes into exploratory surgery, trying to address a retained placenta and multiple vaginal punctures, Vanessa again went into cardiac arrest. She was given a total of 24 units of blood to try to keep her circulation intact despite her massive, unstoppable blood loss. For an hour and a half, hospital staff tried in vain to resuscitate Vanessa before finally pronouncing her dead.

An autopsy revealed that she had developed amniotic fluid embolism (AFE – amniotic fluid in the mother's bloodstream) and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC – a blood clotting disorder) during the abortion. This is what caused her cardiac arrest. When Boyd's staff resuscitated Vanessa, they caused a small laceration of her liver. This is typical in even properly performed CPR, and is not usually life-threatening. However, because of the DIC, Vanessa's blood couldn't clot, and she bled to death from the liver laceration. Since second-trimester evacuation abortions were still new (read "experimental") at the time, Boyd and his staff didn't realize that there was a risk of DIC.

Now days, Texas law requires that abortions done after 16 weeks gestation must be done in a hospital or ambulatory surgical center. When he decided to expand his abortion services to the maximum legal limit in Texas, Boyd was forced to close his Fairmont mill because that location could not meet the minimum safety requirements. In 2009, he reopened his Dallas clinic at a new location as Southwest Women's Surgical Center and expanded his gestational limit to 24 weeks.

However, that was not late enough. Tiller had been providing abortions through the full nine months of pregnancy. If he was to fill in the gap in the late-term abortion business left by the closure of Tiller's Wichita, Kansas abortion mill, then he would have to do that elsewhere. With few laws regulating abortion, New Mexico seemed the perfect place.

The later the gestational age of the pre-born baby at the time of the abortion, the greater the abortion risks. It is only a matter of time before serious late-term abortion complications or even maternal deaths, such as in the case of Vanessa Preston, begin to occur at Boyd's new late-term abortion clinics.

    Abortion is a Family Affair

Boyd shares his abortion practice with his second wife, Glenna Halvorson-Boyd. Glenna is the past president of the National Abortion Federation, of which her husband is a founding member and where the couple still wields considerable influence. Today, Glenna works in Boyd's abortion clinics as a psychologist.

The Boyd's are abortion ideologues who are politically involved, especially in New Mexico where their money has gone to insure that abortions remain unencumbered by restrictions that have caused legal headaches – and sometimes criminal charges – for other abortionists around the nation. Together, the couple has dumped at least $24,600 into New Mexico politics in the past few years. The Boyd's also have an extensive history of contributing to pro-abortion political campaigns in Texas.

"Maybe money can't buy love, but it can buy political cover and favors," said Newman. "We want the people to know the truth about Boyd and his sordid abortion business so they can hold their elected officials accountable to enforce the laws that are on the books, and enact further protections for women and their pre-born babies. Abortionists thrive in secrecy, but knowledge is power for those who protect life."

Leader of Ex-Gay Organization Receives Certificate of Appreciation from D.C. Government

Seal of the District of Columbia.

    Image via Wikipedia

WASHINGTON, April 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- The government of the District of Columbia has awarded a certificate of appreciation to Regina Griggs, executive director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX). The certificate, signed by D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty, recognizes Griggs for her "dedication, commitment, and outstanding contributions as Executive Director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays."

"Regina's award is well-deserved," said Greg Quinlan, President of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays. PFOX presented the award to Griggs last week in honor of her ten years of volunteer service to parents and the ex- gay community.

"Regina has served as executive director without pay. Instead, she prefers that donations be used to develop resources for families and teens, to promote unconditional love for all regardless of sexual orientation, and to seek equal access and protection for the ex-gay community," said Quinlan. "Her dedication is unparalleled."

PFOX has been instrumental in ensuring civil rights to all District of Columbia residents. PFOX's lawsuit against the D.C. Office of Human Rights last year resulted in ex-gays being recognized as a protected class under D.C.'s Human Rights Act. The Office of Human Rights had refused to extend the sexual orientation non- discrimination law to former homosexuals. The court held that the Human Rights Act does not require immutable characteristics for sexual orientation status so that ex-gays are entitled to the same legal protections that gays currently enjoy.

Polls Show November Elections Could Yield Landslide for Pro-Life Movement
Washington, DC ( -- Two new polls show the November mid-term congressional elections could yield a landslide for the pro-life movement. As pro-life groups look to replace the aggressively pro-abortion Democratic leadership that gave Americans the health care bill and its taxpayer funding of abortions, polls show change is coming.

With the leadership of the Republican Party in the House and Senate strongly pro-life and with most GOP candidates taking a pro-life stance and most Democrats backing abortion, a party change in Congress benefits pro-life interests.

With that in mind, a new Gallup poll shows a marked enthusiasm gap in this year s electorate.

Republicans narrowly lead on the generic ballot, 46 to 45 percent, which is very rare for the GOP as Democrats typically lead in party versus party polls.

But among voters who say they are very enthusiastic about voting, Republicans lead, 57 to 37 percent. Democrats hold a lead among voters who say they are not enthusiastic about voting this November and among those who say they are only "somewhat" enthusiastic.

"Gallup has consistently found Republicans expressing a higher level of enthusiasm than Democrats about voting in this year's election campaign. Theoretically, those who are enthusiastic about voting would be more likely to turn out to vote than those who are not enthusiastic," Gallup notes. Full story at

Obama's Pro-Abortion Policies Empower Catholic Dissidents Against Pro-Lifers
    by Deal Hudson
The present White House is having a huge impact on the Church in America. It's typical to hear talk about the influence of the Church on politics, but at the present moment the influence is definitely in the other direction.

The pro-abortion forces in this country and the social justice/seamless garment crowd in the Church have been empowered by the new Congress and presidency. The reason the Church is so weak right now is the sudden power of groups like the Catholic Health Association, Catholics United, and Catholics In Alliance for the Common Good.

These groups, and their leadership, have straight lines of communication throughout the Church, through the USCCB, chanceries, parishes, and various Catholic associations. This is the network that drove the twisted interpretation of Faithful Citizenship through parishes nationwide in 2008.

They plan to do an even better job in 2012, unless we do something about it, unless we stop them.

Obama s leadership, along with that of Pelosi, has strengthened the hand of the most anti-Catholic, anti-life elements of our culture, both here and in Europe, at the EU and the UN. Full story at

States Should Follow Mississippi, Arizona to Cut Health Care Abortion Funding
by Daniel McConchie and Mary Harned
After much debate, the Mississippi House took the important step Saturday of voting for a bill that would prohibit insurance plans in the soon-to-be-created federal health care exchanges from covering abortion.

Some in the media have argued that this is an unnecessary bill and a waste of the legislature s time. The bill s opponents say that the state already prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion and that the bill s proponents are merely grandstanding.

In reality, this is an important and necessary fight.

According to the new health care law passed just last month, Mississippi will soon be compelled to create a new health care exchange where insurance policies can be issued that cover abortion. While rules are in place that are intended to prevent direct taxpayer funding of abortion, it is a fact that the insurance policies themselves will be able to receive federal taxpayer subsidies for anyone earning between 150% and 400% of poverty level.

This new subsidy is a significant departure from current federal policy regarding taxpayer funding of abortion.

There s no better proof that this is an issue than the fact that Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, in exchange for his being the 60th vote to cut off debate on the federal bill, insisted the new law contain section 1303 explicitly allowing states to opt-out of the abortion mandate by passing a law as the Mississippi legislature has just done.

Baby Boy Survived Abortion, Lived Two Days After Doctors Left Him to Die
Florence, Italy ( -- A 22-week old disabled boy survived an abortion attempt in southern Italy, but doctors left him to die afterwards and he survived for two days before passing away. The boy's mother was pregnant for the first time but decided to have an abortion after prenatal scans suggested the unborn child was disabled.

The London Telegraph says the abortion was done at the Rossano Calabria hospital but the baby survived the procedure.

Father Antonio Martello, the hospital chaplain, discovered the baby alive the next day -- about 20 hours after the abortion was reportedly completed.

Martello had wanted to pray over the baby but the newspaper indicates he found the child wrapped in a sheet with his umbilical cord still attached and he was moving and breathing.

After the Catholic priest notified doctors, they moved the baby to a specialist neonatal unit at another hospital for treatment -- but the child eventually died on Monday morning.

Now, the Telegraph newspaper reports the Italian police are investigating the case as a potential homicide because infanticide is illegal under Italian law. Law in Italy makes it clear doctors should provide proper medical care and treatment for children who survive botched abortions. Full story at

Mississippi Sends Bill to Ban Abortion Funding in Health Care to Governor Barbour
Jackson, MS ( -- Mississippi today became the latest state to send a bill to its governor that would allow the state to opt out of the abortion funding in the health care law President Barack Obama signed. The state follows Arizona and Tennessee in having the legislature give such a pro-life bill final approval.

The Mississippi House voted 88-25 Wednesday to remove a procedural hold on the bill and allow it to go to Republican Gov. Haley Barbour, who will likely sign it into law.

Backers of the bill say they want to make sure none of the money the state would authorize under the health care bill when it goes into effect in 2014 would pay for abortions.

Senate Appropriations Chair and first district congressional candidate Alan Nunnelee was the main sponsor of the legislation.

"The Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds that Section 1303 of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, states are explicitly permitted to pass laws prohibiting qualified health plans offered through an exchange in their state from offering abortion cove," the bill says. "It is the purpose of this act to affirmatively opt out of allowing qualified health plans that cover abortions to participate in exchanges within the State of Mississippi." Full story at

Florida Senate Adds Amendment to Health Bill for Ultrasound Before Abortion
Tallahassee, FL ( -- Florida senators today added an amendment to a health care bill that would allow women considering an abortion to see an ultrasound of their baby. Although abortion centers frequently conduct pre-abortion ultrasounds, they don't necessarily give women a chance to see them.

Sen. Alex Villalobos, a Miami Republican sponsored the amendment the Florida Senate approved on a 22-17 vote.

I just don't see the problem with having someone have a little more information before they make a decision, Villalobos said, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

The language does not require women to view the ultrasound and gives them the ability to sign a form opting out of see one. The form also ensures abortion clinics gives women the opportunity to view the ultrasound of their baby.

Sen. Ronda Storms, also a Republican, defended the amendment from abortion advocates who attacked it and said giving women information was anti-woman.

I join women who say we are not little girls. We are adult women and we are making decisions. We can walk into a clinic and we can make a decision and we are not afraid of information, she said. What this amendment does, it says I have a right to know all of the consequences. Full story at

Curtis Boyd Making Albuquerque, New Mexico New Late-Term Abortion Capital
    by Cheryl Sullenger
Texas abortionist Curtis Boyd, who admits he committed illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade, has positioned himself to replace slain abortionist George Tiller as the "go to" man for the most controversial - and most profitable - of abortions, those done in the late-terms of pregnancy on viable babies who are able to survive outside the womb.

"Boyd has the personality hallmarks of most late-term abortionists with whom we are familiar. He is arrogant and believes he is above the law, as evidenced by his own confessions to illegal abortions prior to 1973. He's an ideologue who will do abortions no matter what the law says or who gets hurt in the process. He admits he knows he's killing, but doesn't care. Abortion is his identity. In these ways, he is very much like Tiller," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

    Boyd as Tiller's Back-up Plan?

For years, Boyd has operated two abortion clinics, one in Dallas, Texas, and the other in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Around January, 2009, Boyd moved into a new, larger facility in Albuquerque, one that could handle the particular needs of a late-term abortion facility. During this time, Tiller was in court defending against criminal charges involving 19 counts of illegal late-term abortions. A well-publicized hearing that month failed to dismiss the charges and Tiller was ordered to stand trial in March of that year. Full story at

Oklahoma Law to Allow Women Ultrasound Before Abortion Subject to Lawsuit
Oklahoma City, OK ( -- A pro-abortion legal group based in New York City wasted no time in filing a lawsuit against a new Oklahoma law that helps women by allow them a chance to see an ultrasound of their unborn child while considering an abortion. The lawsuit was filed hours after the Oklahoma state Senate override the governor's veto.

The state Senate voted 36-12 Tuesday to override Governor Brad Henry on two pro-life bills, including the ultrasound measure.

Late yesterday, the Center for Reproductive Rights sued to enforcement of the pro-life law in Oklahoma County District Court.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Nova Health Systems, which operates an abortion center in Tulsa and has filed lawsuits against pro-life legislation over the years. Larry Burns, who does abortions in Norman, also is a party on the lawsuit.

The suit claims the ultrasound measure is unconstitutionally vague, violates women's and abortion practitioner's constitutional speech rights, is an impermissible special law, and "impermissibly burdens the fundamental rights of plaintiffs' patients to terminate a pregnancy and avoid unwanted speech in a private setting."

"In addition, the Act exposes abortion providers to an array of intimidating civil and administrative penalties to which no other health care providers in the state are exposed," the lawsuit complains. Full story at

Louisiana Senate Advances Abortion-Ultrasound Bill, Makes Viewing Optional
Baton Rouge, LA ( -- The Louisiana state Senate advanced a bill today similar to those moving ahead in other states like Oklahoma and Florida. The measure would give women something abortion centers don't normally provide: a chance to see an ultrasound of their unborn child before the abortion.

When used in pregnancy centers, women considering an abortion who see the ultrasound change their mind about the abortion about 80 percent of the time.

The Senate Health & Welfare Committee sent Senate Bill 528 to the full state Senate for a debate and vote.

However, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper, the panel first removed a section that would have required a "screen depicting the active ultrasound images" placed within view. Instead, the bill now gives women a chance to see the ultrasound but a right to refuse to do so.

Sen. Sharon Weston Broome, a Democrat, is the sponsor of the bill that would make the state the fifteenth to allow women the information before considering an abortion.

Dorinda Bordlee, a Metairie and attorney for the Bioethics Defense Funds, wrote the legislation and said its passage in the committee was a "pro-life victory." Full story at

Ohio Voters: State on Wrong Track, Respect Ohio Right to Life Pro-Life Group
Columbus, OH ( -- Independent and Republican Ohio voters overwhelmingly believe the state is on the wrong track, and a majority of Ohioans surveyed have a positive perception of Ohio Right to Life, according to poll numbers released today by Ohio Right to Life Society.

"Our survey shows the electorate's mood is one of general unease with some sharp partisan differences as we head into Tuesday's primary elections," said Ohio Right to Life Executive Director Mike Gonidakis.

"With many contested high profile primary elections, voters are poised to send a clear message with both their choices and the intensity of their turnout," he added.

The Wenzel Strategies survey of 777 registered Ohio voters shows deep divisions between the two major political parties, with independent voters siding with Republicans.

For example, 69 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of independents believe the state is on the wrong track. However, 52 percent of Democrats surveyed believe Ohio is heading in the right direction. Full story at

California Personhood Amendment on Abortion Fails to Qualify for 2010 Ballot
Sacramento, CA ( -- Organizers of the personhood amendment in California announced today that they failed to obtain enough signatures to qualify it for the 2010 ballot. The amendment would define a person as a human being at the moment of fertilization and would have challenged the status of legal abortions.

In the Golden State, the California Civil Rights Foundation submitted language to the state attorney general for what it called the Human Rights Amendment.

Founded by Walter Hoye, a black pro-life pastor who has been unfairly jailed for protesting abortion outside a local abortion center, the group hoped to get the measure before state voters.

The group needed 694,355 signatures to qualify for the 2010 ballot but brought in less than 600,000 signatures despite California's sizable population.

"We were so very, very close," Hoye told today. Full stories at
