Some Pro-Life Doctors Could Quit if Obama Removes Abortion Conscience Laws
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- If President Barack Obama follows through on his promise to overturn the protections the Bush administration put in place to protect pro-life doctors, some physicians could quit the medical practice entirely. That would ultimately hurt Americans' access to health care when Obama is promoting reform. Obama plans to revoke the regulations that provide better enforcement and awareness of existing laws that protect medical professionals from being forced to do or be involved in abortions. To Dr. David Stevens, the director of the Christian Medical Association, that's a problem. CMA's own internal survey shows "90 percent of those surveyed said they will quit their practices before violating their conscience," Stevens said about the potential to be forced into participating in an abortion. If Obama follows through on his promise, it "sends a clear message: It's open season on health care professionals of conscience discriminate at will." Joxel Garcia, assistant secretary for health in the Bush administration and who helped write the new regulations, told NPR that they are necessary because so few health care workers know the laws exist. Study: Abortion Has More Negative Parenting Impact Than Pregnancy Loss
by Amy Sobie
A new review of studies examining various types of prenatal loss and the effects on subsequent parenting has concluded that abortion may be "particularly damaging to the parenting process." The article, published inCurrent Women's Health Reviews, looked at already published studies on miscarriage, induced abortion and adoption. The author, Priscilla Coleman of Bowling Green State University, focused on psychological reactions to these various types of loss and discussed how they might affect a mother's relationship with children born after the pregnancy loss. It is now known that women usually begin feeling maternal attachment in the early stages of pregnancy. The paper notes that despite the increased responsibilities and stress involved in raising children, "numerous studies have documented positive psychological characteristics associated with motherhood including increases in life satisfaction, self-esteem, empathy, restraint, flexibility and resourcefulness in coping, and assertiveness." Losing a child before or at birth, for any reason, however, "can be a profound source of suffering." Full story at LifeNews.com

Catholics Should Oppose Pro-Abortion Sonia Sotomayor Nod for Supreme Court
by Deal Hudson
The confirmation of nominee Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court justice is almost a certainty. She's a woman, a Hispanic, and the pick of a popular president who leads the party that controls the Senate. Democratic leadership in the Senate is determined to complete hearings before the Judiciary Committee and get a confirmation vote before Congress adjourns in August. Thus far, Republicans have not voiced much opposition to the nomination, perhaps thinking it better to save their ammunition for an easier battle. It's a mistake, however, to allow such a nominee to take a seat on the Supreme Court without a serious debate. Catholics in particular should object to more than simply her position on abortion. There is a more basic, epistemological issue at stake: She denies we can have the kind of knowledge necessary to affirm that abortion is morally reprehensible. If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the first postmodern justice on the Supreme Court. Full story at LifeNews.com

When a Celebrity Dies the Nation Mourns, But When a Baby Dies From Abortion...
by Tom Glessner
Recently the nation has seen a wave of deaths of celebrities Ed McMann, Michael Jackson, Farah Fawcett and Billy Mays. Very few people in the general public had personal relationships with these departed public icons. Yet, the intensity level of mourning that the nation has exhibited upon the news of these deaths shows that millions of people identified with these celebrities in a very personal way. The public mourning for the death of Michael Jackson has been particularly intense. For several days after his death the news concentrated on both the details of his death and of his life. His music was replayed on both television and radio broadcasts and video images of him dancing to his music were shown over and over again to a grieving public. Likewise, the deaths of Farah Fawcett, Ed McMann and Billy Mays brought forth many special broadcasts on television to commemorate their lives. Indeed, when a cultural icon passes away we all feel sadness. We all feel that even a part of our lives has also died, and the grieving families of these celebrities should be recipients of our prayers and compassion. If we contrast, however, the public show of grief to these celebrity deaths with the public response to the deaths of 3,300 unborn children that occur from abortion every day we will have to make a disturbing observation about our nation. Pro-Life Walkers Halfway Through Nationwide Trek Across America on Abortion
Fort Morgan, CO (LifeNews.com) -- Three groups of pro-life young people are now more than halfway through their nationwide trek across America to represent the pro-life perspective on abortion. Sponsored by the pro-life group Crossroads, the walkers are divided into three groups where they literally walk from the west coast to Washington, D.C. Wearing shirts with the words "Pro-Life" in bold letters, the 18-30-year-old participants take the summer off to educate Americans and meet with pro-life people. While other groups are taking different routes, one group is heading from San Francisco to Washington and recently stopped in Fort Morgan, on the eastern side of Colorado. The thing thats shocked me the most is how pro-life America is, Josh Spears, the leader of the group, told the local Times newspaper. Spears said the first group of mostly college students made the cross-country journey in 1993 after being inspired by Pope John Paul II during a homily in. The first students to participate came from University in Steubenville, Ohio. Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Life Group Condemns $10,000 Slap on Wrist for Woman's Abortion Death
Detroit, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Abortion practitioner Alberto Hodari was only fined $10,000 and did not see any regulatory punishment or jail time for his part in the legal abortion that killed a woman at his abortion center. A second pro-life organization is condemning state officials for doing so little to value a woman's life. Hodari, based in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, was fined in March after one of his staff did an abortion on Regina Johnson that took her life. New of the fine is only surfacing now. Johnson's death is one of several women to have died over the years under Hodari's care. Operation Rescue president Troy Newman is the second pro-life advocate -- joining Monica Migliorino Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, to condemn the slap on the wrist. "Now we know what a woman's life is worth in the State of Michigan once she walks into an abortion clinic," he told LifeNews.com on Monday. "This paltry fine has reduced Ms. Johnson's life to that of chattel. Animals are bought and sold for more than this." Full story at LifeNews.com

California Mom Sues Over Daughter's Right to Wear Pro-Life T-Shirt to School
Alaska Certifies Bid for Signatures for Parental Consent Before Teen Abortion
Juneau, AK (LifeNews.com) -- A state ballot measure that would allow parents to prohibit their teenager daughters from having an abortion has been certified by state officials. That means signature gatherers can begin their work to get enough state residents to sign up to allow it to go before voters in November 2010. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell certified the initiative and now pro-life advocates need signatures from 32,734 Alaskans so the initiative can appear on the ballot. They need the signatures before the legislative session begins next January from people who think parents have a right to know if their daughter is considering having an abortion.
