The ability to cooperate with God’s creative power to conceive and raise a child is one of the most profound gifts that a married couple can receive. Yet sadly, about 1 in 6 people face infertility at some point. For some, the joy of conception never happens. Others suffer repeated miscarriages. Still others experience secondary infertility: after giving birth to one or more children, they experience difficulty having another. When couples are unable to bear children, very often there is an understandable feeling of great loss. It is essential to note that the Church has true compassion for couples suffering from infertility and wants to be of real help to them. Many causes of infertility can be addressed through medical assistance that is fully in accord with Catholic teaching.

The desire to have a child is beautiful and good. At the same time, we are called to cooperate with God’s design for married love and the creation of new life. Some practices, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy, are not morally legitimate ways to address infertility. In addition to failing to respect the dignity of the couple’s marital relationship and of the child, such procedures often result in the loss of human life.

St. John Paul II affirmed to couples who bear the Cross of infertility, “you are no less loved by God; your love for each other is complete and fruitful when it is open to others.” It is important that couples who experience infertility know that their love is still fruitful and their married life remains filled with meaning. We pray that couples struggling with infertility would know Christ’s closeness in a special way and embrace God’s design as they seek to grow their families.

40 Days For Life: DAY 17: A 67% Drop in Abortions

Prayers are being answered

Your peaceful, prayerful presence in front of an abortion business can collapse the abortion rate where you live.

Take it from Tempe, Arizona, 40 Days for Life leader Jim.

Jim reviewed his state's most recent abortion statistics and discovered that over a five-year stretch, abortions at the Planned Parenthood where he prays dropped by more than 67%.

"We pray for God's intercession to reduce the number of abortions," Jim told his volunteers. "And this is exactly what has happened."

This massive drop in abortions at the Tempe Planned Parenthood coincides with Jim expanding his twice-a-year vigils to a year-round 40 Days for Life 365 vigil!

Jim is so fired up by the Lord's answer to his team's prayers that he launched a second 40 Days for Life vigil at Arizona's busiest abortion facility in Phoenix!

"We have a strong prayer warrior base," Jim said. "But [we] have our work cut out for us. ... May God continue to bless our efforts!"

With God on their side, there's no doubt Jim and his volunteers will save lives and transform their community!

Vienna, Austria

Thomas and his 40 Days for Life team have a prayer tent set up outside Austria's largest abortion facility--which also houses the bizarre Museum of Contraception and Abortion.

The tent makes it possible for the team to hold the vigil around the clock--even during the frigid and snowy Vienna winter.

"It is really a challenge to fill the night hours and a real fight to stay awake when taking a night shift," said Tom and Felix from the leadership team. "Such extreme sacrifices are necessary in the supernatural fight against evil...and to inspire others to overthrow the shackles of polite indifference and take a stand themselves against this genocide."

This sort of heroic generosity explains how the Vienna 40 Days for Life vigil helped close the city's oldest abortion facility in 2023.

"A recent highlight for us was stepping out of our little 'igloo' at 4:00 a.m. to have a quick snowball fight!" Tom and Felix continued. "The message is clear: No matter what life throws at us, we aren't budging."

Marietta, Georgia

"This man is a hero!" wrote Marietta 40 Days for Life leader Suzanne.

An infantry squad leader who earned two Bronze Stars leading a team into direct combat in the jungles of Vietnam, Chuck is proud that all of his squad members returned home safely.

His lifesaving heroism continues with his participation in Marietta's vigil.

"At the last minute, Rachel texted Chuck to ask whether there was any way he could come to pray at Planned Parenthood," Suzanne shared. "Of course, Chuck made it work. With a heart of gold, Chuck faithfully has been praying outside Planned Parenthood with 40 Days for Life every week for years."

They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven."

--Mark 2:3-5

Lord, your love is always the same and somehow always new. Your love is creative. Guide my steps, prompt my conversations, and help me to know how to reach expectant mothers contemplating an abortion. Help me to believe that you can and will work miracles through my faith.

For life,
