DEACON FOR LIFE

Were there to be no support in the whole history of ethical and moral thought, were there no acknowledged confirmation from medical science, were the history of legal opinion to the contrary, we would still have to conclude on the basis of God's Holy Word that the unborn child is a person in the sight of God. He is protected by the sanctity of life graciously given to each individual by the Creator, Who alone places His image upon man and grants them any right to life which they have.

Sen. Barbara Boxer introduces bill requiring federal government to promote use of “emergency contraception”

Of course this only makes for more abortions, but these people are either blind to the facts or don't care. Deacon John

Free PR for the morning-after pill

California Sen. Barbara Boxer, along with eight other colleagues, has quietly introduced a bill that would require the director of the federal Centers for Disease Control to widely publicize the so-called "morning-after pill," a drug used to induce chemical abortions.

The bill, S. 2108, titled the "Emergency Contraception Education Act of 2007," was formally introduced on Sept. 27. It was read twice on the floor of the Senate, then referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, where it remains today.

Co-sponsors, in addition to Boxer, include senators Hillary Clinton, D-NY, Patty Murray, D-WA, Max Baucus, D-MT, Maria Cantwell, D-WA, Christopher Dodd, D-CT, Daniel Inouye, D-HI, John Kerry, D-MA, and Frank Lautenberg, D-NJ.

Words to Grow By:

If I want my dreams to come true, I mustn't oversleep.

Of all the things I wear, my expression is the most important.

?
The best vitamin for making friends:? B-1

The quality of my life depends on the quality of my thoughts.

The heaviest thing I can carry is a grudge.

Keep my words soft and sweet in case I have to eat them.

One thing I can give and still keep: my word.

One thing I can't recycle is wasted time.

I lie the loudest when I lie to myself.

Ideas won't work unless ' I' do.

My mind is like a parachute...it functions only when open.

The 10 commandments are not multiple choice.

It is never too late to become all God can make me.?

As we approach the Feast of The Immaculate Conception:

The Triumph of Mary's Immaculate Heart

Thomas J. Euteneuer

People sometimes ask me what they can do to counter the negative effects of our decadent society. My answer always comes down to two things: be truly Catholic and be Marian. This is the formula for transforming our world, and when these commitments are fully in place, everything else follows. There are many ways to be a good foot soldier of Mary and the Church, but let me give you one excellent example.

On the morning of May 13th of 1981 the world waited with baited breath to see if Pope John Paul II would survive the assassination attempt on his life by a crazed Turkish gunman operating under orders from Communists. It was the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, and in gratitude for saving his life, the Holy Father went to Fatima the following year on her feast day to re-consecrate himself and his papacy to her Immaculate Heart. Something in John Paul's experience of being targeted by a murderer, surviving miraculously and re-consecrating his life to Mary is paradigmatic for all of us: it symbolizes the triumph of Mary's Immaculate Heart over the culture of death. John Paul will be known in history for his brilliant defense of the sanctity of human life and for his immense love of Mary. In fact, he showed us that consecration to Mary and dedication to life are synonymous realities.

This was borne out by what happened just hours before the assassination attempt. On the morning of the day that he was felled by Ali Agca's bullet, Pope John Paul signed two documents formalizing the Virgin Mary's counter-attack on the culture of death. That morning he established both the Pontifical Council for the Family and the John Paul II Institutes for Marriage and the Family worldwide. It is hard to imagine two works of the Church that have done more to strengthen the divine institutions of marriage and the family than these. The Council has been a bastion of pastoral defense of the family like no other for the past twenty-five years, and the JP2 Institutes have literally transformed the Church's theology of marriage by propagating and deepening John Paul's "theology of the body" throughout the entire world. Many Catholics may not be aware of the work of these institutions, but certainly the Church as a whole has benefited immensely by their apostolates.

Consecration to Mary and defense of these sacred realities are intimately connected in the Church's fight against modern errors. I can think of no other period in history where Mary's messages have been so urgent in defense of life, marriage and family. Her Immaculate Heart cannot be neutral to the devil's shock and awe campaign against God's plan for us which, as John Paul said so often, passes through the family in a very tangible way. Mary has chosen to meet us there at the crossroads of the modern conflict with the prince of evil. Her battle plan is to involve us in a heroic effort to protect life, marriage and the family at a time when it is most under attack.

In practical terms, everyone who rejects the cultural poisons of contraception, abortion, sex education, euthanasia, and the myriad attacks on everything sacred is engaging in Mary's battle. Some do battle by coming out of the murky cultural darkness and producing the fruits of conversion for all to see. Others engage the enemy by deliberately teaching the abundance of Catholic truth on these subjects to the young. Many more will infuriate the devil simply by living their marriages and family lives according to Catholic teachings. There are many ways to be Mary's foot soldiers.

We all want to make this world better, indeed to transform it into the Kingdom of God. The way to do it is to be a faithful Marian Catholic. That is the Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart - one heart at a time.

OPERATION RESCUE REPORT

911 Call Reveals Cold-Hearted Attitude Toward MA Woman's Abortion Death

Delay in release of autopsy report slows progress of discipline, puts women at risk

Hyannis, MA - December 6, 2007 - Audio files and transcripts obtained by Operation Rescue of a 911 call and subsequent communications between emergency responders reveals a cold-hearted dispassion concerning the death of a Massachusetts woman during an abortion in September. Records show that a woman named Kim, who was an employee of "Women's Health Center," an abortion office owned and operated by Rapin Osathanondh, made a 911 call to the Hyannis Fire Department on September 13 requesting medical assistance for a woman who had aspirated and was not breathing. That woman, 18-year old Laura Hope Smith, died during an abortion. Smith's mother, Eileen Smith, told Operation Rescue that she was surprised at the lack of emotion she heard during the call. She said she had expected to hear panic and perhaps background noise indicating efforts to revive her daughter, but instead there was just a matter-of-fact pronouncement that her daughter was "not breathing." "I've heard people order pizza with more emotion than that clinic worker had when calling help for Laura," said Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullenger. "In contrast, it appears that the emergency workers did all they could for Laura. The amount of units that responded, and the call to the Captain indicated that they took the situation very seriously." Eileen Smith has been pursuing action to bring Osathanondh to justice for the death of her daughter. However, all action awaits an autopsy report that should have taken about four weeks, but three months later has yet to materialize. Without the autopsy report, the District Attorney cannot make any decision about criminal prosecution in the case, and any consideration of disciplinary action by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine remains on hold. "All the delay in releasing the autopsy report is accomplishing is continued pain to Laura's family, who cannot find closure until the legal issues are resolved," said Sullenger. "In the meantime, the abortionist continues to ply his trade on unsuspecting women, who are at risk of suffering the same fate as Laura. We pray that the report will be released with all speed, so that this matter can move forward as it should."

Slovak High Court Restricts Abortion

Right to life now protected from 12 weeks, formerly 24 weeks

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia, December 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Judges of the constitutional court ruled yesterday that allowing abortions until 24 weeks gestation "did not comply with the constitution," but that a basic 12-week deadline for abortion was in line with the "prevailing practice of relevant European legislation." The court said that it "did not try to answer philosophical, moral or ethical questions" but only sought to decide about the compliance of existing abortion rules with the constitution.

Daniel Lipsic of the Slovakian Christian Democratic political party submitted a request to the courts to ban abortions six years ago, but the case was delayed due to the shortage of constitutional court judges. Abortion was made legal in 1958 in Slovakia, then part of the Czechoslovak Republic, under the Communist rule of Russia. Article 15 of the country's new 1992 constitution, however, safeguards the right to life including the life of the unborn.

Though the court ruled against the request to ban abortion, the limits now placed on abortion may be seen as another victory for the Pro Life cause in this predominantly Catholic country.

In early September, 2007, LifeSiteNews reported on the show-the-truth billboard campaign launched by Pravo Na Zivot (Right To Life), an initiative of the Centre for Bioethical Reform (CBR Europe) in Slovakia. This campaign was so successful that it compelled the country's Health Ministry to rescinded a law that forced all hospitals to provide abortions.

Pro Life advocates are now working on a proposal that would give hospital staff the right to refuse to do abortions on religious grounds, based on "recognizing the freedom of conscience in the protection and promotion of values intrinsic to the meaning of human life."

Demographically, Slovakia, a nation of 5 million, cannot afford to lose any more of its future generations, and there is hope in the findings of studies that show the number of abortions has gone down by more than 70 percent since the collapse of communism.

Zora Bútorová, graduate of Comenius University in Bratislava, author of numerous studies and articles on political culture and value orientations in post-Communist Slovakia, and currently resident scholar of the Slovak Institute for Public Affairs said, "the rapid decrease in the number of abortions shows that since 1989 the sense of responsibility of both women and men on this issue has increased considerably."

Abortion Campaigners Launch Attack on Hockey Wives' Charitable Support for Crisis Pregnancy Centre

By Hilary White

OTTAWA, December 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - One of Canada's most prominent journalistic abortion advocates, Heather Mallick, has accused the wives of Ottawa Senators hockey stars of "bullying" pregnant women. She also accused a crisis pregnancy counselling service of being "sinister" for its connections with a Christian church.

But the "bullying" by the wives consists of forming a charitable organisation called "The Better Halves" to raise funds by raffling Christmas trees. Mallick's objection is that one of the charity's beneficiaries is a peer counselling centre that tries to offer women alternatives to abortion and support during unexpected pregnancy.

First Place Pregnancy Centre of Ottawa also offers counselling for women and girls suffering post-abortion "stress", a consequence of abortion most feminists like Mallick deny exists.

Mallick denounces the First Place as "an Ottawa anti-abortion group run by Pentecostal Christians." Mallick warns darkly that First Place is attempting to hide its purpose. "They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion."

Mallick complains that through the Senators' charitable arm, the Sens Foundation, the effort is being publicly subsidised. Without a trace of irony, and writing on the CBC, Canada's hugely tax-funded broadcaster, Mallick writes, "What irks is that our tax dollars are involved."

She says, "As a pro-choice woman, I write and speak about abortion rights and donate money. But I don't get a tax break and would ridicule the suggestion. Half the joy of activism is its utter lack of reward."

Planned Parenthood, however, from whom she admits receiving her information about the First Place Centre, is heavily funded through donations under its own charitable tax status. Internationally, Planned Parenthood, as well as being the world's largest abortion provider, is among the world's wealthiest non-profit organisations and receives massive amounts of taxpayer dollars. The Canadian government gave $18 million to Planned Parenthood last year.

Mallick offers what she considers the coup de gras and reveals that the First Place website links to the US' American Life League and that the Centre is financed by Ottawa's Bethel Pentecostal Church in Ottawa a part of whose mission, she says, is "not just anti-abortion but anti-birth control".

Implying that in Canada association with Christian churches makes a group "sinister", she goes so far as to hint darkly that it is connected to anti-Semitism.

Mallick's column is not the only attack on the fundraising effort. Ottawa Planned Parenthood has produced a media release denouncing First Place as an "anti-choice" organisation because it will not refer for abortions.

Their media release accuses the Centre of attempting to trick donors. Heather Greenwood of Planned Parenthood Ottawa wrote that women who visit First Place sometimes complain "that they couldn't get the information that they wanted and sometimes they're angry because they feel as if they were tricked into believing that they were going to a pro-choice counselling session only to discover that that was not the case when they got there."

Terri Mazik, Executive Director of First Place Pregnancy Centre, responded saying that First Place is a "pro-women" organisation and that Planned Parenthood's accusations "mischaracterize First Place operations."

"The fact that we do not offer abortion referrals is plainly stated on our website and is reiterated to anyone making an appointment. At the beginning of a clients' first appointment he/she reads and signs an intake form that clearly states we do not provide abortion referrals. There are no efforts to 'trick' anyone, as the Planned Parenthood Ottawa statement infers."

But Judi McLeod, writing for the Canada Free Press, said the whole affair sounds like an effort by Planned Parenthood to quash freedom to choose. McLeod writes, "Wait a minute, Ms. Greenwood, isn't Planned Parenthood the organization that thinks it fair for teens as young as 13 to have access to birth control without their parents' knowledge?"

"Surely, Ms. Greenwood means to say 'allegedly' tricked into believing that they were going to a pro-choice counselling session only to discover that was not the case when they got there?" McLeod adds.

Attempts by Planned Parenthood to pressure the Senators directly is having little success. Sens Foundation president Dave Ready responded to Mallick that the First Place pregnancy centre is "in line with our mandate". Ready responded to Mallick's accusation of improper donations saying, "We did due diligence and checked that it's a charity."
