Questions for Archdiocese of Boston Official Appearing with Rep. Barney Frank

Media_httpwwwcatholic_efhfm

NEWTON, Mass., Jan. 3, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Catholic Advocate Vice President Matt Smith today issued the following statement regarding the panel discussion "Truth, Lies and Politics" being held this evening, Jan. 3, in Newton, Massachusetts at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center. The event has been promoted in the Boston Globe as "Truth, Lies and Politics, a panel discussion featuring [Congressman Barney] Frank, journalist Robert Kuttner, and Father J. Bryan Hehir [Archdiocese of Boston Secretary for Health Care and Social Services]. Author Leonard Fein moderates the program exploring the relationship (or lack thereof) between politicians and truth-telling."

"Father Hehir has an opportunity this evening to represent the teachings of our Church. The question is: will Father Hehir himself speak the Truth tonight?" asked Smith. "Will he speak the Truth to Congressman Frank about marriage being between one man and one woman? Or address Congressman Frank's 100% pro-abortion voting record? These are pressing issues of 'truth-telling' between politicians."

Media_httpwwwcatholic_ixglo

According to Freedom to Marry, a pro-same sex marriage organization: "We need more Barney Franks in public life, not fewer, and fortunately we will always have his indelible example to work from." From their own website, "Freedom to Marry is leading the campaign to overturn DOMA [Defense of Marriage Act] and is working across the country to win marriage in more states and educate the public about why marriage matters to same-sex couples and their families."

Smith added, "With Congressman Frank's retirement at the end of this year, will Father Hehir take the opportunity tonight to publicly speak the Truth that faithful Catholics do not need more representatives voting like Barney Frank in Washington if we are going to make progress on the settled issues of life and marriage?"

How You can save lives in 2012

Dear Deacon,

Applications to lead a spring 40 Days for Life campaign
are officially underway ... and they've been pouring in
from across North America and around the world!

By early indications, February 22 - April 1 is going
to be a VERY exciting 40 Days for Life. And if you feel
called to help save lives by leading a local campaign
in your community, this is your opportunity:

http://www.40daysforlife.com/apply

On that page, you can apply online or print out an
application and mail it in. We will be accepting
40 Days for Life applications for ONLY ONE MORE WEEK --
until next Tuesday, January 10.

PLEASE NOTE: You do NOT need to apply to pray,
volunteer or participate in a local 40 Days for Life.
The applications are only for people wanting to lead a
40 Days for Life effort in a community.

Now, you may be wondering exactly how God can use YOU
to help save lives as a part of 40 Days for Life.

We posted a video online that addresses that topic:

The video was shot at a presentation in Baltimore,
Maryland, right before the kickoff of the 2008 fall
40 Days for Life. It uses real-life stories of how
God saved lives and made an impact through the
faithfulness of His people -- people just like YOU.

After watching, hopefully you will have a better sense
of your role in this effort.

Deacon, we have an opportunity to make a profound
impact together at the beginning of 2012 -- and we can't
wait to see how God plans to save lives through YOUR
dedication and faithfulness!

For Life,

Shawn Carney

MEET ‘AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS’ — A ‘CHRIST-CENTERED’ ALTERNATIVE TO THE GIRL SCOUTS

Media_httpwwwtheblaze_ohxpo

Last week, the Blaze’s report about the Girl Scouts of the USA‘s “MEdia” book and its encouragement that young girls visit Media Matters to clear up “misinformation,” gained a great deal of attention. The story, though, wasn’t the first time in recent memory that the Girl Scouts have come under fire.

In October, we reported about the Girl Scouts of Colorado‘s decision to let a little boy into the organization’s fold. And, on a grander scale, there have been countless accusations of liberal bias waged against the group. Some have felt so passionate about the organization’s alleged leftist allegiances that they have launched alternative groups for families seeking more traditional scouting experiences.

Take, for instance, American Heritage Girls (AHG), which describes itself as, “a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.” AHG was founded back in 1995 in West Chester, Ohio, by a group of parents who were looking for a Christ-centered alternative to some of the increasingly-secular organizations that had been setup for young girls (i.e. the Girl Scouts).

Leading pro-life group launches campaign against gay marriage

London, 3 January 2012: A leading pro-life group has launched a campaign against the Westminster government's proposals for same-sex marriage.

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) www.spuc.org.uk has today published a position paper on same-sex marriage http://goo.gl/NshB6 following a resolution by SPUC's Council last month. SPUC has also made available today a background paper http://goo.gl/GpUOD to be read in conjunction with the position paper and which provides some additional references and reflections. SPUC is the world's oldest pro-life lobbying and educational organisation, founded in 1967.

SPUC states that:

  • Marriage - the permanent, exclusive union of one man and one woman - is the basis of the family, the fundamental group unit of society. Upholding marriage

     is therefore in everyone’s interests.
  • Marriage as an institution protects children, both born and unborn. Statistics show that unborn children are much safer within marriage than outside marriage.
  • Same-sex marriage lacks basic elements of true marriage e.g. the complementary sexual difference between spouses necessary for the procreation and healthy upbringing of children.
  • Same-sex marriage represents an attempt to redefine marriage, thus undermining marriage. This undermining lessens the protection for unborn children which true marriage provides.

John Smeaton, SPUC's director, commented: "We can't build a true culture of life if we don't defend the truths which connect sexuality to human life. Homosexual unions, whether the existing civil partnerships or the proposed gay marriages, are radically disconnected from those truths. SPUC's Council, elected by SPUC's grassroots volunteers, has therefore resolved to defend human life by defending marriage from the government's proposed redefinition to include homosexual couples."

SPUC's communications department can be contacted on 07939 177683 or 020 7820 3129 or news@spuc.org.uk
