'Change' Should Begin in Obama's Heart Says Dr. Alveda King

'Change' Should Begin in Obama's Heart Says Dr. Alveda King

ATLANTA, Nov. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Dr. Alveda King, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said today that the first change President-elect Obama should pursue is to alter his attitude toward the unborn.

"President-elect Obama has become synonymous with 'change,' yet the most positive new direction he could seek would be to find room in his heart for the unborn," said Dr. King. "He has promised to take actions that will only increase the number of babies killed by abortion. He has stolen the hope that millions of babies might have their very existences recognized, much less protected. If Mr. Obama wants to bring change that we can believe in, he needs to begin by changing his view that not all Americans have a right to exist."

"If the President-elect is successful in his advocacy of the so-called Freedom of Choice Act, he will bring a change that virtually no one but abortion profiteers wants," added Dr. King. "Not only will this legislation make abortion completely unrestricted everywhere in the country, it will require that we all pay for destroying babies with our tax dollars. FOCA would be a change that crushes the hope of life. If Mr. Obama wants to bring us together, he needs to change his agenda toward our most helpless and voiceless brothers and sisters."

Pro-Life Action League Sounds Call to Activism

Pro-Life Action League Sounds Call to Activism
The solution is not in politics, says League's National Director

CHICAGO, Nov. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Initially, the Pro-Life Action League was concerned that Barack Obama's pro- choice history would carry on into the White House. Now that Obama has won the presidential election, the League's newest concern is that pro-lifers will lose hope. Obama has pledged to Planned Parenthood that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, aimed at eradicating any and all restrictions on abortion in all fifty states. The following is a statement from the League's national director, Joe Scheidler, in regards to how pro- lifers should keep both babies and their own hope alive:

"In the weeks since Barack Obama's presidential election victory, two things have become apparent. First, come January, the pro-life movement is going to be facing the most hostile political environment we've ever known. And second, pro-lifers across the country are turning to grassroots activism as the most effective way to meet that challenge.

"The election results are a call to action. Many pro-life Americans are waking up to the realization that they cannot sit and wait for the politicians and judges to restore legal protection to unborn babies. If we want to save babies from abortion, we've got to save them ourselves."

Three suggestions for what pro-life Americans can do to stop abortion are:

1. Go out to local abortion facilities to pray for and offer compassionate counseling to abortion-bound mothers. Sidewalk counselors save thousands of babies every year, and the Pro-Life Action League is a recognized leader in training these life-saving counselors, and providing the literature and other resources they need.

2. Conduct a Face the Truth Tour in their communities, by holding large signs depicting fetal development and abortion along busy streets and highways. These tours, which are protected by the First Amendment, show the truth about abortion that has been shut out of the mainstream media, and have convinced many women not to go through with abortion.

3. Sign up with the Pro-Life Action League to receive the practical information and hands-on materials you need to effectively share the pro-life message with friends, family, fellow churchgoers, coworkers and neighbors.

"From the beginning, my mission has been to mobilize opposition to abortion on the local level. When a pro-lifer reaches out to an abortion-bound mother and gives her the help she needs to choose life, Roe v. Wade has been overturned for that baby.

"What's always been needed is pro-life evangelism. It is our duty as citizens and as Christians to changes hearts on abortion, one by one. And that's just what we're going to do during the Obama presidency."

Obama Names Pro-Abortion Lawyer, Ex-NARAL Staffer to Judicial Team

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a move that underscores Barack Obama's dedication to promoting abortion, the incoming president has named a prominent pro-abortion attorney to serve as a member of his Department of Justice Review Team. Dawn Johnsen is a professor at the Indiana University School of Law. But she is more than that -- she is a longtime abortion advocate and worked for one of the leading abortion advocacy groups. Johnsen was the Legal Director for NARAL from 1988-1993. After that, she served in the Clinton administration as the Acting Assistant Attorney General heading the Office of Legal Counsel from 1997-1998 and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General from 1993-1996. Johnsen also served on the Clinton transition team in 1992. Full story at LifeNews.com

Second Bioethics Advisor Shows Obama Promoting Embryonic Research, Cloning

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Barack Obama has appointed another bioethics advisor whose appointment, pro-life observers say, makes it clear he will force taxpayers to fund embryonic stem cell research. The appointment of Alta Charo, a former member of Bill Clinton's Bioethics Advisory Commission, also could pave the way for human cloning. Charo is a professor of law and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin and she will serve on Obama's Health and Human Services team. She is a well-known advocate of embryonic stem cell research and has sparred with Wesley J. Smith, a noted attorney and author who is a top bioethics watchdog. "The new Obama Administration is going to push full speed ahead pouring money into embryonic stem cell research and, I worry, human cloning," Smith said in response to the news of Charo's appointment. "This concern is heightened by the appointment of Alta Charo to the transition team," he added. "Charo, like so many academics, is very radical (from my perspective) on these and most other bioethical issues, and so--as I have said previously--we are entering very dark days," Smith explained. Pro-Life Advocate Backs Republican Chair Candidate, Steele Opposes Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In the latest developments in the race for the chairmanship of the Republican Party, pro-life advocate Donald Wildman, the head of the American Family Association, has weighted in on the race. Meanwhile, Michael Steele has reconfirmed his staunch pro-life views in the wake of some criticism. Wildman, in an email to Saul Anuzis, the pro-life Michigan GOP chair who is himself a candidate for the national office, backed South Carolina GOP chair Katon Dawson. Steele, a 2006 Senate candidate and a leading black Republican, is seen by some as one of the top candidates for the national chairmanship. The Times indicated Steele met with its editorial board on Tuesday and reconfirmed his pro-life views. As the Times notes: "Steele clarified his stance, saying that he thinks Roe should be overturned as a sloppy piece of decision-making, favors state regulation on abortion, and supports the Republican party's platform that calls for a constitutional ban on abortion."

Election Results Don't Mean Pro-Life Movement to Stop, Limit Abortions is Dead
Chicago, IL (LifeNews.com) -- One of the most respected attorneys involved in the battle to pass pro-life legislation at the state level says the presidential election results are a setback for the pro-life movement. But Clarke Forsythe, senior counsel for Americans United for Life, says those who say the pro-life movement is dead are exaggerating. Forsythe talked with the Zenit news service about the results and said Americans aren't less pro-life because Barack Obama was elected. Instead, he believes the election was about the economy and, in no way, a repudiation of pro-life principles. "It is very difficult to keep pro-life and other issues of justice at the center of public life in the midst of war and economic crisis," he told Zenit. "William Wilberforce's campaign against the slave trade in Great Britain during the 1790s -- which was derailed by the French Revolution, war with France, economic crises and terrible harvests -- is a good example. But Wilberforce (and his allies) persevered and things turned around over considerable time." Full story at LifeNews.com

Obama Picks Pro-Abortion Napolitano for Homeland Security, But Helps Arizona
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Incoming president Barack Obama has picked pro-abortion Gov. Janet Napolitano to become his new head of the Department of Homeland Security. Napolitano constantly chagrined pro-life advocates with her vetoes of pro-life legislation and the pick may help get pro-life laws on the books there. Napolitano would have to survive a Senate confirmation vote, which isn't expected to be difficult despite some criticism of her on other issues. Should she be confirmed, pro-life Republican Secretary of State Jan Brewer would become the state's next governor -- which appears to be good news for pro-life groups. That would put pro-life advocates in control of both the state legislature and the governor's seat and would theoretically make it easier to get new laws on the books. Napolitano has been a formidable obstacle as governor. She vetoed every piece of abortion legislation that has come across her desk -- seven pro-life measures in total. Full story at LifeNews.com

Planned Parenthood CEO Claims Cardinal O'Malley Out of Step With Catholics
Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- It's no surprise that Catholic Church officials take pro-abortion politicians or groups to task for saying they are out of step with pro-life Catholic teachings. Now, a Planned Parenthood CEO in Massachusetts is turning the tables and claiming Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston is out of step with his membership. After the presidential election, O'Malley told the Boston Globe that he is worried about the election of Barack Obama because of his pro-abortion views. The concern come despite his pleasure that the nation turned a corner in electing the first African-American president. "My joy, however, is tempered by the knowledge that this man has a deplorable record when it comes to pro-life issues and is possibly in the pocket of Planned Parenthood," O'Malley said. Dianne Luby, the president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, responded to O'Malley in an email to the newspaper. "It diminishes Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley's credibility when he attacks President-elect Barack Obama and Planned Parenthood for views and services his own members overwhelmingly support," Luby claims. Full story at LifeNews.com

Virginia Pro-Life Advocates Try For Choose Life License Plates a Second Time
Richmond, VA (LifeNews.com) -- Virginia pro-life advocates are trying a second time to approve legislation allowing motorists to approve Choose Life license plates. The Virginia legislature passed a bill allowing the plates in 2003, but pro-abortion Gov. Mark Warner vetoed it and the legislature couldn't muster enough votes to override. Now, pro-life Senator Ken Cuccinelli of Centerville, who is a candidate next year for Attorney General, will be sponsoring SB 801 to bring the plates into existence. With the support of Richmond Coalition for Life, Cuccinelli's bill will provide for a "Choose Life" revenue-generating license plate. The money raised from the plates, according to the legislation, will go to "not-for-profit agencies...that provide counseling and other services intended to meet the needs of expectant mothers who are committed to placing their children for adoption." Victoria Cobb, the president of the Family Forum, a pro-life group, is urging pro-life advocates to support the plate and the bill. She says it's about time Virginia residents have a Choose Life plate since so many other specialty plates are available for purchase. Full story at LifeNews.com.

Allegheny College in Pennsylvania Fails to Include Pro-Life Newspaper Ads
Meadville, PA (LifeNews.com) -- Officials at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania are coming under criticism for refusing to run a newspaper advertising supplement from a pro-life group. The ad, from Human Life Alliance, would have appeared in the student newspaper, "The Campus." HLA frequently inserts its 12-page advertising supplements, which appear as a mini-newspaper, within college papers because studies show college students begin to move away from the pro-life position during their time on campus. The content of the supplements has changed through the decades that HLA has provided them and the latest ad, "We Know Better Now," details information on pregnancy and the impact of abortions on student's lives.
At Allegheny College, officials for "The Campus" had already accepted payment for the November 13 edition when a local supporter noticed it did not appear in the paper. "We were shocked the paper would take the money, have us ship 1500 copies of 'We Know Better Now' and then refuse to run the advertisement," Jo Tolck, executive director for Human Life Alliance, told LifeNews.com. Fr. Tom Euteneuer: Election Part II - Catholic Culture and the Election of Barack Obama

Election Part II - Catholic Culture and the Election of Barack Obama

It is impossible to speak of a "Catholic culture" in America any longer. A whole segment of the populace who call themselves "Catholics" do not feel bound by any standard of Catholic orthodoxy or sanity. In fact, it is impossible to even speak of a Catholic culture in most parishes! At a recent "ministry faire" of a large Catholic parish in south Florida, the Respect Life ministry of the parish displayed its pro-life materials next to the table of the "social justice" committee of the same parish. Any commonality between the two ministries was simply in the space they shared. Their worldviews could not have been further apart, but they both call themselves Catholic.

In fact, the "social justice" people were positively aglow about the election of their new messiah, Barack Obama. Several of them were speaking of their plans to attend the Inauguration and were utterly unaware that there would be 100,000 people marching on the nation's Capitol two days later for the right to life of unborn Americans which they had just voted into irrelevancy by electing Obama to the highest office of the land. One of them even expressed shock at the provisions of the upcoming Freedom of Choice Act until he was confronted with the nasty little fact that his messiah had been a sponsor of that pernicious bill in the last Congress. True to form, he steadfastly refused to allow that truth to have any effect on his euphoria. His mind was made up, and he would not let himself be confused by facts. Needless to say, the orthodox, practicing, believing Catholic pro-lifers will not be attending the Inauguration.

How can these two groups sit side-by-side in the same pews and display their ministries in the same space at the same Catholic parish? Simply because this contradiction has been tolerated for years by those in charge of our Church. In this election season neither of these two groups received any guidance about voting according to Catholic principles because, as per usual, there was silence from the pulpit on the issue. The absolute failure of our church leaders to define for us what membership in the Church means - and then to enforce it - has led to the degradation of Catholic culture and the loss of meaning for things that are sacred. When Christ and Belial are considered equal partners in the sanctuary, then nothing in the sanctuary means anything any more and no meaningful standard exists to distinguish a true Catholic from a false Catholic.

The degradation of Catholic culture is largely, but not exclusively, the fault of the clergy. For four decades in the Catholic Church in America we have seen:

  1. Liturgical abuses run rampant, aided and abetted by those in charge
  2. Two or three generations of Catholics left un-catechized or taught with flimsy, Protestantized fluff passed off as Catholic education
  3. Sexual abuse by clergy excused and unaddressed by the hierarchy
  4. A blind eye turned to high profile dissent and political class heretics
  5. Wholesale attacks on sacred teachings that receive virtually no response from our pastors (and if it weren't for Catholic Answers, EWTN and the Catholic League we would have no defense whatsoever)
  6. The succumbing of our Catholic institutions of higher education to the ravages of political correctness, and the list goes on.

In the face of all this, should we be surprised that 54% of "Catholics" voted for Barack? Hardly.

The battle for Catholic culture begins with us, and there is no time like the present to don the armor of spiritual warfare. We either believe and practice what the Church teaches or we live as part of the shadow church, falsely trading on the Name Catholic for its benefits without at the same time shouldering the crosses that this entails.

There is, however, great hope for the future because the battle has already been engaged: new Catholic colleges are springing up to replace the old decrepit houses of heresy, new religious orders with abundant vocations and orthodoxy have arisen, home schooling families and strong lay movements are abundant now. Only when we take back our beloved Church from the false Catholics and clerics will our Church be able to stand up and rebuke the storm winds of paganism that are building faster than we care to admit. This project is not without its price, however. The cost of being a true believer will undoubtedly be much higher than ever before in our lifetime. Starting now and into the next generation we as Catholics will have to show the world not only what we believe but that we are willing to lay down our lives for it as a witness to the truth.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

QUASHING TRUTH IN SOUTH CAROLINA
By Judie Brown

Father Jay Scott Newman, Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, South Carolina, recently advised his parishioners,

Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exists constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation.

When he made this statement, I am positive he did not realize it would make him a nationally known figure and that it would be condemned by his own diocese. How could he?

The final sentence of the paragraph above was commented on by highly qualified theologians who were concerned that Father Newman had oversimplified the matter and needed to address the theological arguments differently.

Father Newman realized, within a day, that a more complete explanation was in order so that his parishioners would understand fully what he was teaching. He immediately posted that expanded clarification of Church teaching on the parish web site. But you won't find it there now!

Why? The reason is that the administrator for the Diocese of Charleston repudiated Father Newman and has prohibited him from talking to the media. The administrator, Monsignor Laughlin contributed to misrepresentations in the media by distorting what Father Newman actually said. He silenced this priest, rather than giving him the support he surely deserved for taking such a courageous position in the first place.

As Phil Lawler wrote in his blog,

Unfortunately the Charleston diocese ordered Father Newman not to release that clarification, and the excellent statement that was posted on the St. Mary's parish web site has been removed. So the confusion endures.

This campaign season saw the debate over abortion, and more particularly, over the duty of Catholic voters to resist legal abortion. Imagine if Father Newman had issued the same sort of pastoral warning regarding some immoral behavior that does not carry such strong political implications. Suppose, for instance, he had said that men who use pornography, or women who have undergone voluntary sterilization, should not receive Communion before making a good Confession. Would such a warning draw a rebuke from the chancery, too? If a pastor cannot warn his people about the moral consequences of their behavior, then the Church cannot instruct the faithful.

Father Newman's statement was a powerful challenge, not only to his own parishioners, but to countless thousands of Catholics and even non-Catholics who read it. He forcefully reminded us all that abortion is not an abstraction (as those who pound home the slogan of "choice" would have us believe) but a concrete reality. Our attitude toward abortion is not only a matter of personal opinion but a moral decision, for which we shall all be held to account.

This action by Msgr. Laughlin exposes, in a way I could never have imagined, the problems we are facing in this age of media posturing, political maneuvering and mediocre clarifications of the most crucial questions of our day. It would seem that watering down truth has become the modus operandi for far too many diocesan administrators and bishops, not to mention moral theologians.

An excellent commentary, "South Carolina Priest Thrown Under the Bus," in the Remnant newspaper raises a situation that every single American, not only Catholics, should find troubling. For when the Remnant contacted Father Newman for comment, he said, "I have been instructed not to distribute my bulletin column and letter which I wrote earlier today and to refer everyone who asks to the diocesan website and Msgr. Laughlin's statement."

The Remnant continues,

So, in other words, the diocese has shut him down, referred all reporters to the diocese, which is not going to return calls or grant interviews, but instead refers everyone to their "statement" which selectively quotes parts of the Catechism of the Catholic Church about a Catholic's conscience formation to "refute" Father Newman's clear and orthodox Catholic teaching.

The official statement of the Charleston diocese, dated November 14, posted on its web site, states,

This past week, the Catholic Church's clear, moral teaching on the evil of abortion has been pulled into the partisan political arena. The recent comments of Father Jay Scott Newman, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, S.C., have diverted the focus from the Church's clear position against abortion. As Administrator of the Diocese of Charleston, let me state with clarity that Father Newman's statements do not adequately reflect the Catholic Church's teachings. Any comments or statements to the contrary are repudiated. . .

Christ gives us freedom to explore our own conscience and to make our own decisions while adhering to the law of God and the teachings of the faith. Therefore, if a person has formed his or her conscience well, he or she should not be denied Communion, nor be told to go to confession before receiving Communion.

I am not a moral theologian, but clearly the diocese has chosen to undermine the truth by muddying the waters and abandoning a wonderful Catholic priest and shepherd who is indeed concerned for the souls entrusted to his care. How can anyone argue that, because a Catholic pastor has clearly taught his people the reasons why voting for a pro-abortion person is sinful, that he is a pastor who "has diverted the focus from the Church's clear position against abortion"?

A priest who knows Father Newman quite well e-mailed this to a friend of mine:

Now Fr. Newman finds himself climbing his own Calvary, carrying a heavy cross, given his refusal to live a cowardly priestly existence – including enduring a wishy-washy Pontius Pilate-style diocesan administrator who changes his mind, based on whatever forces are controlling him at the moment.

Amen and amen!

If you agree with this eloquently stated assessment, I hope you will let Msgr. Laughlin know your opinion of Father Jay Scott Newman's actions. And I suggest you also send a note of thanks to Father Newman as well, but it appears that you cannot e-mail him or any of the other priests at St. Mary's at this time. Use their submission form anyway, and perhaps all of the e-mails will show the Diocese of Charleston what kind of support he has.

FROM LIFENEWS.COM:

Barack Obama Picks Pro-Abortion Senator Tom Daschle as Health Secretary
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In his second major decision as the president-elect, Barack Obama has chosen pro-abortion former U.S. senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota as his Health and Human Services Secretary. Daschle will replace pro-life advocate Mike Leavitt, who has been working on protecting pro-life doctors and nurses. The former Senate Majority Leader reportedly accepted Obama's offer according to two Democratic Party sources. To become official, Daschle's confirmation requires an affirmative Senate vote. As the health secretary, Daschle will likely play a role in shaping Obama's health care plan, which has come under fire for possibly including abortion coverage or mandating that hospitals or insurance companies cover abortions. Daschle would also be in a key position to rescind the protections the Bush administration is expected to put in place any day now for pro-life doctors and medical centers. The Bush protections make sure medical facilities and medical personnel are not forced to be involved in abortions that violate their moral or religious views. The new HHS rules strengthen existing laws by providing for funding cuts for agencies or medical centers that violate them. Daschle has a long pro-abortion voting record as a member of Congress and was defeated by current pro-life Sen. John Thune in part because of the abortion divide. Full story at LifeNews.com

Obama Urged Not to Fund UNFPA After Chinese Woman Escapes Forced Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Now that the woman in northwestern China who was six months pregnant has escaped a forced abortion, pro-life advocates are restarting their plea for incoming president Barack Obama not to fund the UNFPA. They say the United Nations agency supports the family planning program that placed Arzigul Tursun in jeopardy in the first place. As LifeNews.com reported Tuesday, Tursun was released from a hospital where she had been held captive awaiting a planned forced abortion. Chinese officials admitted the abortion would jeopardize her health and let her go. Now leading pro-life advocates are pointing to the incident and the UNFPA's proven involvement in China's coercive one-child policy as a reason to continue de-funding the group as President Bush has done. In total, Bush has revoked $240 million in taxpayer funding for the pro-abortion group since 2002, but Obama has pledged to renew annual payments to the group. Rep. Chris Smith, a New Jersey congressman who led the efforts to lobby Chinese officials to release Tursun, says the incident makes it clear the UNFPA has done nothing to stop China from engaging in forced abortions. "To forcibly abort a woman while the world watches in full knowledge of what is going on would make a mockery of [Beijing's] claim that the central government disapproves of the practice, and of the U.N. Population Fund pretense that it has moderated the Chinese population planners' cruelty," Smith said.

Forced Abortion Incident in China Proves Pro-Choice Groups Are Pro-Abortion
by Steven Ertelt
For years the "pro-choice" mantra has gone something like this: abortion should be between a woman and her doctor, we can't tell women what to do with their bodies, women have a right to choose, etc. Yet, a recent forced abortion incident in China proves so-called "pro-choice" advocates are nothing more than pro-abortion. Arzigul Tursun and her family understand the length to which the oppressive Chinese population control regime will go to keep to its limited birth quotas. Six months pregnant, Tursun found herself captive at a local hospital with the impending threat of a forced abortion. But what about groups like Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Emily's List and others who are "pro-choice" on abortion and supposedly represent women? They did nothing. None of the major abortion advocacy groups have issued as much as a press release backing Tursun's right to keep her baby let alone conducted interviews on her behalf. There is no indication they lobbied American or Chinese officials, or started petition drives or other campaigns on her behalf.

Catholic Bishops' Warning to Obama on Abortion Just Start of Pro-Life Battle
by Dr. Paul Kengor
A potential big battle has begun, one of special interest to all Christians and guaranteed to generate a lot of attention from all Americans.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has issued a stern warning to president-elect Obama and his incoming administration, highlighting grave concerns over what will happen to unwanted, unborn human life. The statement was delivered at the end of the annual assembly that represents all American bishops i.e., the full American Catholic Church. It was issued by Francis Cardinal George of Chicago, president of the USCCB. The subject is the once unthinkable Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which Barack Obama promised will be the "first thing" he signs as president. As the bishops forcefully noted, FOCA would eliminate countless reasonable restrictions on abortion enacted by bipartisan legislatures, Democrats and Republicans working together over the past 35 years, including parental-consent laws and protection for babies who accidentally survive an abortion. FOCA, wrote the bishops, "would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars." Every American would be complicit in paying for abortions you would have no choice. Full story at LifeNews.com

House Republicans Elect Pro-Life Congressmen to Top Leadership Posts
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Republican members of the House of Representatives held their caucus elections on Wednesday and elected several pro-life advocates to top leadership posts. The elections are important for shaping the GOP message and response to the abortion advocates who control Congress. Minority Leader John Boehner, of Ohio, was re-elected to his top position over pro-life Rep. Dan Lungren of California. Boehner has compiled a 100% pro-life record on abortion and bioethics issues according to the National Right to Life Committee. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia was chosen minority whip, the number two leadership position in the GOP caucus. NRLC also says Cantor has a 100 percent pro-life voting record on abortion and embryonic stem cell research funding. Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana became House Republican Conference chairman in a contest that saw him run unopposed. Pence is a former radio talk show host whose involvement in pro-life activities in his home state is longstanding. Full story at LifeNews.com

Adult Stem Cell Research Yields Major Success in Patient's Windpipe Transplant
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- The use of adult stem cells has ushered in another major success and, this time, doctors were able to use a patient's own stem cells to give a woman a new windpipe. Very few trachea transplants have been performed and this new procedure could become a new standard of treatment. The successful transplant again shows how adult stem cells are not only more ethical than their embryonic counterparts but more effective. They also underscore the opposition to and lack of a need for incoming president Barack Obama to force taxpayers to fund the use of embryonic stem cells that involve the destruction of human life as he has promised to do. Dr. David Prentice, a former biology professor at Indiana State University who is now associated with the Family Research Council, talked about the case's impact on the stem cell research debate. "This is another great advance underscoring the real success of adult stem cells in beneficial patient treatment," he told LifeNews.com. "Using the patient's own adult stem cells prevents the problem of transplant rejection, or the tumors that come with embryonic stem cells."

Arizona Agency Must Move Forward on Choose Life License Plates, Court Says
Phoenix, AZ (LifeNews.com) -- A federal court on Wednesday ordered the Arizona License Plate Commission to approve the Choose Life license plates. The decision comes after the Supreme Court, last month, let stand a federal appeals court ruling saying Arizona pro-life advocates could have the specialty plates. The high court denied a writ of certiorari in the case of Arizona Life Coalition v. Stanton after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the September 2005 decision of U.S. District Judge Paul G. Rosenblatt. The appeals court had ruled that pro-life advocates would have their First Amendment rights abrogated by state officials preventing motorists from purchasing Choose Life license plates. Today, Judge Rosenblatt acted on the Supreme Court denial and issued a ruling telling the commission to move forward.

Corpus Christi, Texas City Council Revokes Planned Parenthood Funding
Corpus Christi, TX (LifeNews.com) -- Planned Parenthood continues to lose taxpayer funding across the country and the latest governmental agency to revoke it is the Corpus Christi city council in Texas. Members of the council pulled $30,000 in funding for the abortion business from the city's $500,000 youth development budget. The budget disperses state and federal taxpayer funds in conjunction with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
While the council approved funding for a host of other groups serving young people in the coastal city, they voted to delete the Planned Parenthood funding. Before the vote, it had been in place for the last four years. ACTION: There is no record of which members voted against the funding, but use the following web site to send members of the council a note thanking them for deleting the Planned Parenthood funding:

Wyoming Pregnant Woman, Unborn Baby Die, Case Highlights Need for Law
Cheyenne, WY (LifeNews.com) -- A pregnant Cheyenne woman and her unborn child were killed on October 30 in an automobile accident that pro-life advocates say points to the need for a state unborn victims law. The man allegedly responsible for the accident will only be held accountable for killing Brenda Collins-Newman and not for taking the life of her child. Collins-Newman was killed when an apparently drunken Ronald Smith of Torrington hit her vehicle head on. Although news reports don't indicate how far along the pregnancy was, Brenda had already planned to name her baby boy Cian Charles. John Robinson, chief deputy attorney for Converse County, only has the ability to charge Smith with one count of aggravated vehicular homicide.
