Lifeissues.net Newsletter #476

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.LifeIssues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

[Stem Cells Repair Eye] A man was partly-blinded when ammonia was squirted into his eye, severely scarring his cornea. Stem cells were taken from his healthy eye, grown on a layer of amniotic tissue and then transplanted to the damaged eye. Six months later, vision was nearly as good as before.

[Embryonic Stem Cell Research Obsolete] Using "direct programming" scientists have made a major breakthrough, which further renders embryonic stem cell research obsolete. With the application of three genes they are actively and directly changing one cell type to a completely different type. This is a striking advance. It transforms cells directly into the desired functional tissue and short cuts the previous need to first revert these cells to a pluripotent state.

[Another Adult Stem Cell Success] This includes re-growing patient's jaw bones and repairing heart damage. We note that the Family Research Council's new web-site details stories of patients successfully treated for sickle cell anemia, spinal cord injury and scleroderma.

God Bless,

Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #2. Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies

"Like any other life-sustaining resource," says Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, "language can be depleted, polluted, contaminated, eroded, and filled with artificial stimulants." Today more than ever, language needs to be rescued and restored.

ITEM #3. Forced sterilisations for thousands in southern China crack-down

Anyone who thought China was softening its one-child policy will have to think again after news that one local government in southern China is forcing thousands of couples to undergo sterilisation -- and, in many cases, holding their parents hostage to ensure they comply.

Our culture says it loves children, but take a look at what it does.

ITEM #5. Stress, quarrels and neglect: the 'normal' polygamous family

A large-scale study currently underway across Malaysia uncovers proof that polygamy harms everyone involved: from emotionally scarred children, to wives who think they'd be better off as single-parent households, and even husbands who admit "I wouldn't recommend it for my son; it's quite stressful."

ITEM #6. More Evidence That China Killing Dissidents and Selling Their Organs

If these stories are true–and I believe they are–China is a monster state. I have previously covered credible charges that Falun Gong prisoners are killed and their organs sold, stating that while there was not enough proof for a "conviction" beyond a reasonable doubt, the evidence would certainly justify a "search warrant," thus compelling, it seemed to me, concerted international investigations.

ITEM #7. Spain Education for the Citizenry teaches bestiality sex can be freely practiced Parents Protesting

Parents' organizations in Spain are fiercely protesting the curriculum of the Socialist government's required education course, "Education for the Citizenry," after it was revealed that in one Spanish city, students are being taught that sex can be freely practiced, even with animals.

ITEM #8. The Pill at 50

When Mother's Day was invented just over 100 years ago, early and multiple motherhood was the near-universal destiny of most women. That all changed 50 years ago with the invention of "the Pill," as oral birth control soon became known.

ITEM #9. Alzheimer's kills memories, not emotions

I thought about Dad last week, when I read about a new University of Iowa study that found patients with Alzheimer's-type memory loss can remember the emotional imprint of an experience even after they have forgotten the event itself.

ITEM #10. Stem cells raise hope for treatment for multiple sclerosis patients

The world currently produces enough food for everybody, but many people do not have access to it and to have the nourishment necessary for a healthy and productive life.

ITEM #12. Organ donation: Presumed consent coming to U.S.

Comment: "Presumed consent" (regarding organ donation) means that if you do not explicitly say you do not want to donate, the government will presume that you do want to donate. One of the dangers in this is that many people do not realize organ procurement is being done in ways that are ethically - and medically - problematic. For example, "Donation after cardiac death" (DCD) - involves hastening the death of an individual deemed to be "hopeless." Furthermore, it is quite possible that an individual could be aware that they are being carted off for donation and believed they would not be aware. Now imagine being aware and knowing you had never explicitly consented to donate.
