Newspaper reports Catholic Healthcare West facilities in Ventura County would allow abortions in some situations


"Authentically Catholic?"

Two Catholic Healthcare West hospitals in Ventura County would permit physicians to deliberately kill an unborn child in the womb to save a mother's life, the Ventura County Star reports.

In a May 28 story about a controversy that erupted in Arizona when Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted declared that a nun at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center -- a Catholic Healthcare West hospital -- had automatically excommunicated herself for approving an abortion, the Star reported that the excommunicated nun's counterpart in Ventura County would make the same choice if confronted with a similar case.

The Ventura County newspaper misstated the controversy in the first paragraph of the story by posing the question this way: "Faced with the choice of aborting a first-trimester fetus to save a mother's life or following a religious edict issued in Arizona that means the woman and child die, doctors at Catholic hospitals in Camarillo and Oxnard would end the pregnancy, said the chairwoman of an ethics committee at the two hospitals."
