Courage conference to minister to those with same-sex attraction

.- The Courage apostolate's upcoming annual conference seeks to strengthen the faith, and the confidence in Christ of Catholics who have same-sex attraction, helping them to live their call to chastity.

“The Church finds herself in the unhappy situation of having to say ‘no’ to things she knows to be contrary to the human good,” Fr. Paul Check, director of Courage, told CNA July 1.

“But whenever there’s a ‘no,’ and of course Our Lord also said ‘no’ to certain things in the Gospel, there has to be a corresponding ‘yes.’”

“The ‘yes’ is the outstretched hand of fraternal charity that the Church offers to men and women with same-sex attraction and to parents with a son or a daughter with homosexual inclinations, to indicate to them that the Church’s fraternal charity and pastoral care is expressed for them in a practical and concrete way, at the Courage group or an EnCourage group.”

The Courage apostolate aims to help those who have same-sex attractions and want to live according to Catholic teaching, which recognizes homosexual acts as grave sins. The conference is geared for Courage members and their friends as well as members of EnCourage, a partner organization for parents of those with same-sex attractions.

This year’s conference takes place from July 25 to July 28 at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Ill.

Celebrants at conference Masses include Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago and Bishop John M. LeVoir of New Ulm, Minn.

Speakers include author Fr. Emmerich Vogt, O.P., psychiatrist Sr. Marysia Weber, R.S.M., philosophy professor J. Buziszewski, author Dawn Eden, counselor Dr. William Consiglio and Fr. Paul Scalia.

The conference will also feature workshops, personal testimonies, and opportunities for confession and Eucharistic Adoration.

“Gatherings of this kind are essential to fostering that confidence that God is very much with his people, with his Church,” Father Check told CNA. “The help that he gives us, to live a holy life in a fallen world, is very real, and leads to the fulfillment of the promises that he made.”

“It’s a wonderful combination of prayer, of talks, and of fellowship for those who see the Courage apostolate as a vital ministry of the Church and to promote the virtue of chastity,” he added.

Fr. Check is a priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Conn., who teaches moral theology and ethics to seminarians and men preparing to become deacons. He first served as a Courage chaplain in 2003 and was asked to head the organization in 2008.

Jesus Christ is “very much at the center” of every Courage gathering, he explained. Meetings provide opportunities for prayer, conversation about holiness and virtue in life, and how to take practical steps to “put aside behaviors and actions which are inconsistent with human nature and strive for a greater trust in God’s providence.”

Fr. Check said Christians should ask themselves whether they truly see chastity as “part of the good news” and as “a virtue that leads to self-fulfillment.”

Chastity helps people to prepare for “self-giving” and to avoid selfishness, “particularly in the sexual realm.” It helps people to live justly and to treat others “according to the fact that they are created in the image and likeness of God.”

Fr. Check called for more thoughtful reflection on how God created human nature and for a “deeper trust” in Church teaching, especially given recent Supreme Court decisions on marriage.

“Unfortunately now, I think for many Christians, divorce and contraception are not excluded from marriage, and that prepares the ground for an acceptance of homosexuality,” he said.

In “turbulent” cultural times, he continued, Catholics “need to encourage a kind of further depth of peace of mind and heart.”

“Nothing is outside God’s providence,” he said.

Courage has a presence in about half of the Catholic dioceses of the United States. Fr. Check said the organization “would like to see a vital presence, at least one chapter, in every archdiocese and diocese.”

The deadline for the Courage conference registration is July 17. More information is available at the Courage website, couragerc.net.

Texas Bill Filed to Ban Abortions at 20-Weeks After Mob Stops Last One
Texas legislators today filed a new bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks and hold abortion facilities accountable for breaking health and safety laws after a pro-abortion mob derailed the previous bill.

The bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks and hold abortion clinics accountable by making them meet basic health and safety standards that have closed facilities in other states that are unable to comply. The bill also requires all abortion clinics to meet the same health and safety regulations as an ambulatory surgical center, requires a doctor providing abortions to secure admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and lastly, requires a doctor to personally administer the abortion-inducing drugs to the patient. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/01/texas-bill-filed-to-ban-abortions-at-20-weeks-after-mob-stops-last-one/
Doc Tells Woman: Sit on the Toilet for an Abortion, Don’t Call 911
A new undercover video shows how a late-term abortion practitioner abandons women during the multi-day abortion process and leaves them alone in hotel rooms to deliver babies, telling them to “just sit on the toilet.”

Live Action has released the sixth video in its latest undercover investigation. The video exposes abortion doctors at Southwestern Women’s Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico revealing disturbing aspects of the facility’s protocol, including the practice of leaving women alone in hotel rooms to deliver their dead children. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/01/abortionist-abandons-women-to-birth-babies-in-hotel-room-just-sit-on-the-toilet/
Video: Pro-Life Activists Sing Amazing Grace to Drown Out Abortion Protestors
Hundreds of pro-life advocates gathered inside the Texas state capitol today to show their support for bills that have been filed that would ban late-term abortion and hold abortion clinics accountable for putting women’s health at risk.
Abortion advocates showed up and dotted the floor of the capitol rotunda but were no match for the pro-lifers, who sang “Amazing Grace” to drown out their chants. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/01/video-pro-life-activists-sing-amazing-grace-to-drown-out-abortion-protestors/
Our Son Has Impacted Thousands, Though He Lived Only a Few Minutes
Friday June 14th did not turn out as I expected.

I started the day enjoying a pedicure with the bride to be and very good friend Megan along with her mom Cathy and all of her bridesmaids. We had an enjoyable lunch and ran a few errands and then were headed home to start preparing for the rehearsal. Starting on the Tuesday before I had some mild spotting, it was never anything much and dark brown, a normal pregnancy occurrence. I never had any pain at any point. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/01/our-son-has-impacted-millions-though-he-lived-only-a-few-minutes/

Mom Makes Kids Hold Signs at Texas Rally for Late-Term Abortions
Most of the people who attended a small rally today at the Texas capitol to protest a ban on late-term abortions lawmakers are considering were adults. But one mother made her small children hold pro-abortion signs at the protest.

She also had them sporting the burnt orange color abortion activists wore today to standing solidarity with pro-abortion state Senator Wendy Davis, who is leading the charge to keep abortions legal up to the day of birth. http://www.lifenews.com/2013/07/01/mom-makes-kids-hold-signs-at-texas-rally-for-late-term-abortions/
Activist Groups Paying People to Protest Texas’ 20-Week Abortion Ban
Debate begins anew today in Texas as state legislators file legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and hold abortion facilities accountable for following health and safety laws.
Abortion activists are out in force today to protest the bill and Katie Pavlich of Town Hall discovered they are getting money to do so.
Wendy Davis Was a Single Mom Who Chose Life, Now She Pushes Abortion
Texas Senator Wendy Davis chose Life. She was a 19 year old single mom (briefly married then divorced) in financial dire straits. Texas Tries Again to Pass 20-Week Abortion Ban As Pro-Life Activists Mobilize

Texas Tries Again to Pass 20-Week Abortion Ban As Pro-Life Activists Mobilize

Austin, TX - The second special session of the Texas Legislature, set to begin today, promises to provide more high drama as a pro-life bill is considered that bans abortions after 20 weeks and provides other abortion clinic safety regulations to protect women.
The new 30-day session was called by Gov. Rick Perry after a contentious pro-abortion mob disrupted the Senate last week after a filibuster failed in the waning hours of the session. A vote was taken to pass the pro-life law, but could not be signed before the session expired due to the disruption.

Gov. Perry assured an audience at the National Right to Life Convention on Thursday that the much-needed Texas legislation, now called House Bill 2, would pass in this session.

"This is simply too important a cause to allow unruly actions of the few to stand," said Perry, who called on pro-life supporters to "match their intensity, but do it with grace and civility."

Pro-lifers in support of the law gathering at the Texas Capitol in Austin are urged to wear blue.

Late-term abortion atrocities came to light during the murder trial of Pennsylvania abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted on three counts of murder for snipping the spinal cords of late-term babies born alive during abortions at his squalid West Philadelphia abortion clinic.

Just two days after Gosnell's conviction, news broke that three former employees of Houston abortionist Douglas Karpen accused him of twisting the heads off babies born alive during abortions. Operation Rescue, which had worked with the ladies to bring their allegations to the proper authorities, released a full report and photos taken by the women that showed large, late-term aborted babies that had large gashes in their necks. Karpen is under active investigation by the Homicide Division of the Houston Police Department.

These two revelations gave new urgency to the immediate passage of the late-term abortion ban in Texas since the Legislature only meets every two years. Polls have shown that 64% support a second-trimester abortion ban, while over 80% of Americans support a ban on abortions in the third-trimester of pregnancy.

HB 2 is set for a hearing in a House committee tomorrow, but already pro-abortion activists are mobilizing with a rally today. Sen. Sylvia Garcia promised more opposition to a bill that would provide protection to late-term babies and ensure that more safety measures are in place at abortion clinics.

"If anything, we will be more energized," Garcia told the Houston Chronicle. "We will be energized from the beginning."

"It's hard to imagine anyone opposing safer conditions for women and protections for babies that can feel pain and survive if birthed instead of aborted," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "In reality, the pro-abortion mob is supporting unsafe abortion clinics, lower medical standards for women, and the inhumane and brutal killing of babies that suffer terribly during an abortion. They are completely out-of-step with the vast majority of people in Texas who are horrified by such abuses."

To show support for the Texas pro-life legislation, pro-life supporters are taking to the social networking site Twitter.com and tweeting under the hashtag, "#Stand4Life."

A live Internet feed of the proceedings can be viewed at http://chron.com/txpolitics.

Rest in Peace, Magaly Llaguno, Great Champion of Life

Magaly-tribute
Rest in Peace, Magaly Llaguno,
Great Champion of Life

FRONT ROYAL, Virginia – With very heavy hearts, Human Life International announces the passing of our dear friend, Magaly Llaguno.
HLI president Father Shenan J. Boquet said the following: “As many knew, last year Magaly suffered a relapse of cancer that was particularly aggressive, leading to her resignation from Human Life International earlier this year so she could focus primarily on her health and treatment. I was just one of many who were struck by her joy and peace even amidst great suffering during this last year. With the various treatments and the pain she was enduring, she continued to send emails and call colleagues to keep them inspired, to translate and share important articles and documents, to stay in the fight with every ounce of energy that she had.”

Magaly passed away on Friday, June 28 in Miami, Florida.

Magaly started in the pro-life movement over 40 years ago, working from her own home without pay. She helped in the founding of the National Right to Life. In 1984, Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, founder of Human Life International, asked her to be the Executive Director of Vida Humana Internacional (VHI), the Hispanic Division of HLI, to defend life and family in Spanish speaking nations.

Over many years, Magaly developed a network of affiliated and collaborating organizations throughout Latin America and Spain. This network not only continues today, but in fact is working better than ever, its leaders and colleagues continuing to win victories for life today. The network began through Magaly’s efforts to bring leaders together at the first international pro-life congresses of Latin America, of which she was the chief organizer.

With VHI’s affiliate in Mexico, Comite Nacional Provida, led by Jorge Serrano, Magaly helped to create a network of crisis pregnancy centers throughout Latin America – a network that today has over 120 centers and has saved untold thousands of pre-born babies and their moms from abortion.
Magaly personally saved many women and children from abortion, often giving her own resources, and fought to keep anti-life sex education out of Miami schools. Even while fighting for her life during the last year, she continued to collaborate with the USCCB, as well as with many pro-life leaders to bring Project Rachel and Respect Life Committees to Latin America. Magaly was given the 2011 “People of Life” award from the Pro-Life Secretariat of the USCCB for her work as a leading advocate for life internationally.

Magaly was the key player in developing the most-visited Spanish language pro-life web site in the world, vidahumana.org, which often averaged 3 million hits a month, leading to many lives saved and countless pro-lifers being moved to join the fight for life. She participated in countless interviews and gave countless presentations, to small groups and to thousands, all with her unique passion and conviction.
“We will sorely miss Magaly, a sister in the battle for life, a joyful defender of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. What kept Magaly going through thick and thin, through terrible personal suffering and setbacks, was her conviction that God had called her to do this important work. Her ‘yes’ to God saved thousands of lives and brought many champions together. Fighting for truth and life until the end, leaving nothing on the table… We would do well to learn from such a courageous and faithful witness,” said Patricia Bainbridge, chairman of the board of Human Life International.

Father Boquet asks all who fight for life to pray for the repose of Magaly’s soul, and for all who mourn her passing. Eternal rest grant unto Magaly, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace and may all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Cells of the future: making living tissue from dead bodies

Stem cells play a small role in practical medicine today, but new research by French scientists showing that they can be harvested post-mortem opens up a world of medical possibilities.

At the Pasteur Institute in Paris, a scientist opens a standard kitchen refrigerator and pulls out a clear plastic vial filled with cherry-colored liquid. A small, soft, fleshy lump sits on the bottom. It is a piece of muscle, taken from a deceased 44-year-old Frenchman. The laboratory will use its stem cells to grow a brand new strip of living muscle in the hopes that — one day — post-mortem stem cells can provide sick or injured people with a whole new source of body parts.
The near-miraculous properties of stem cells have intrigued medical researchers for years. With their ability to divide repeatedly and fabricate other cells, they are ideal for reconstructing or repairing tissue. Embryonic stem cells can give rise to any organ, while most adult stem cells are limited to their own origin — neural stem cells make neurons, those from the skin form skin, and so on. Adult stem cells are constantly regenerating our blood and skin, and they also mend tissue that has been damaged by injury or disease.
Now a group of French researchers from the Pasteur Institute have discovered another awe-inspiring property: stem cells can survive without oxygen. This means that even when the body is dead, the stem cells continue living, in a state of reduced metabolism.

It gets tiresome to see the mainstream media constantly fawning over the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and now the staunchly pro-abortion Texas state senator Wendy Davis (who, incidentally, was an associate of Ralph McCloud, the current director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; click here for that story) – all the while claiming to be objective, of course.

One woman who's exponentially more deserving of praise than the aforementioned three women combined is veteran pro-life activist Monica Migliorino Miller, Ph.D., married mother, director of the Michigan-based Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, and associate professor of theology at Madonna University.

Dr. Miller, author of the book Abandoned: The Untold Story of the Abortion Wars, recently submitted an op-ed to The New York Times in response to a June 20 op-ed by former Seattle City Council member Judy Nicastro, who procured a late-term abortion and, sadly, chooses to defend the horrid procedure. Click here to read Mrs. Nicastro's op-ed, if you can stomach it.

Dr. Miller's op-ed was not accepted for publication by The Times, as the paper's policy is not to run op-eds in response to other op-eds; only letters to the editor. (Thankfully, The Times did at least print a letter by Dr. Miller; click here to see it.)

The following is Monica Migliorino Miller's op-ed that wasn't run by The Times (with very minor edits).
