Lifeissues Newsletter #640

Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues
Dear Friends for Life,
Why is the Church against premarital sexual relations?

Because she would like to protect love. A person can give someone else no greater gift than himself. "I love you" means for both: "I want only you, I want all that you are, and I want to give myself to you forever!" Because that is so, we cannot, even with our bodies, really say "I love you" temporarily or on a trial basis.

Many people take their premarital relationships seriously. And yet there are two reservations involved that are incompatible with love: the "exit option" and the fear of a child. Because love is so great, so sacred, and so unique, the Church teaches young people the obligation to wait until they are married before they start to have sexual relations. -CCC section (2350)

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(The Difference is LIFE) "Behind the walls of Indian middle-class houses, unequal India is produced and reproduced. This is where children of privilege learn early to accept and normalise inequality, lessons they carry for life. Domestic workers are the only elders they can command, call by their first names, and speak rudely to without being deterred. When a small boy of four is asked to touch the feet of all his elders, how does he know so early that he is expected to touch the feet of all older people - except the domestic help?. . . .. .Unequal India will begin to change only when we teach our children to treat people who care for us in our homes as equal human beings, of the same worth and dignity." - Harsh Mander in The Hindu.

(Abortion): "Aborting Justice Over Dead Bodies"TIn our society, an entire group of people are dismissed and denied the most basic right - the right to life. And, day after day, laws are continually formed and twisted so that preborn babies are thought of as nothing and discarded as trash. A society cannot function when so many members are thrown away. A society cannot function when so many members are looked upon as burdens and as objects of disgust..

ITEM #1: Humans Waste Nearly Half Of The World's Food

Between 30 to 50 percent of the 4 billion tons of food produced worldwide ends up being wasted and dumped, according to a study by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering in England.

ITEM #2:
The aftermath of the rejection of Humanae Vitae

This week marks national NFP Awareness Week as well as the 45th anniversary of the encyclical Humanae Vitae. The final installment of this series honors those clergy who stood up in the face of dissent.
****************************************

ITEM #3:  Gujarat: 12,000 baby girls killed in the state's cities

In urban areas, the number of deaths for girls under one year of age is 12,325 against 8,076 for boys. In rural areas, the gap is more balanced. For the director of a Jesuit centre for human rights, this is due to a patriarchal outlook, which continues to prefer sons over daughters and favours selective abortions and female infanticide.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Things Your Doctor May Not Have Told You About Your Birth Control

I passionately believe that women deserve to know how their bodies naturally work and how each form of contraception interferes with their natural functioning. How can they give informed consent without it?
****************************************

ITEM #5: What Do We Do Now? Making the Switch from Contraception to Natural Family Planning

Discovering the Truth about contraception can be one of the most defining moments in a couple's marriage. But quite often, the joy of this discovery is accompanied by fears, doubts, and many questions.
****************************************
ITEM #6: The effects of child marriages and sexual abuse at a young age
"Child marriage is an appalling violation of human rights and robs girls of their education, health and long-term prospects," says Babatunde Osotimehin, M.D, Executive Director, UNFPA. "A girl who is married as a child is one whose potential will not be fulfilled. Since many parents and communities also want the very best for their daughters, we must work together and end child marriage."

ITEM #7 New York Times Falsely Claims Fetal Pain is a Fake Medical Theory
Comment: I remember when premature babies were operated on without anesthesia and I was appalled. (I even remember when my full-term son was circumcised without anesthesia after birth and the doctors just dismissed his obvious signs of pain!) Now, preemies are routinely given anesthesia. Note this excerpt from the article "PHYSIOLOGICAL AND ANAESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE PRETERM NEONATE UNDERGOING SURGERY" from the Jan-Mar 2012 issue  of the Journal of Neonatal Surgery (onine at: http://www.jneonatalsurg.com/documents/vol-1/html/jns-2012-1-18.html): "Recent work has shown that as early as the 13th to 20th week of gestation, there is perception of pain." Obviously, it is not the prolife movement that is anti-science! -Nancy V.
****************************************

ITEM #8: Women's Freedom: Humanae Vitae vs. the Sexual Revolution

Thank goodness for the sexual revolution, right? Now women can be free-unfettered by the standards of morality and religion-and truly own their own sexuality. This is the underlying message in the glossy magazines in the grocery store, the television dramas and reality shows, and the "lessons" learned in sexual education classes. But are the lives of women really more free and joyful now that we have birth control and other means of controlling (manipulating) our sexuality?

ITEM #9: Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide In Europe

In Europe there are four countries who have legalised either euthanasia, assisted suicide, or both; the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and Switzerland. Euthanasia is when a doctor intentionally ends the life of a patient and assisted suicide is where the doctor prescribes lethal drugs for the patient to take under their own steam.

****************************************

ITEM #10: The media's schizophrenia: fetus vs. baby

Journalists use language to denote a difference between life and death: a baby that's wanted and a fetus that's doomed or unwanted. One is a blessing, the other a problematic "clump of cells."
****************************************
ITEM #11: Cardinal George (OMI) hits back at critics of decision to defund pro-gay 'marriage' immigrant group
After a group of eight Catholic Democrats published an open letter in the Chicago Tribune Monday criticizing Cardinal Francis George for threatening to withhold charitable funding from an immigrant group that recently came out in favor of same-sex "marriage," the cardinal fired back in a statement, calling the letter's signers cynical and "intellectually and morally dishonest."
****************************************
ITEM #12: It's a girl: The three deadliest words in the world
An estimated 200 million girls are missing. How can the world community stand by and allow gendercide to continue? asks the maker of a documentary film on this scandal.
