OFFERING ANOTHER CHOICE IS A “NO-BRAINER”

OFFERING ANOTHER CHOICE IS A

“NO-BRAINER”By Anne O’Meara
July 6, 2022 What would the world look like if employers supported women in their pregnancies instead of paying women to abort their children?

Following the recent overthrow of Roe v. Wade, a number of US corporations – Walt Disney Company, JPMorgan Chase, Netflix, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and many others – have announced plans to cover out of state travel costs for employees seeking abortions.1  Buffer Insurance, located in Texas, however, is taking an entirely different approach. This company recently announced ”it would provide maternity and paternity paid leave for employees, in addition to helping cover medical costs related to giving birth and adopting children.”2

Surely genuine pro-choice advocates couldn’t object to Buffer’s announcement? After all, providing increased financial support would offer pregnant women one more choice. And given that in the US we have a surplus of families wishing to adopt and a deficit of available children, this seems like a “no-brainer.”

If you need more information to convince yourself that Buffer’s approach is a sound one, consider that America’s birth rate is dropping, and some experts are warning of an impending demographic crisis. We have hit a record low birth rate in the United States (1.64 babies per woman) and we’re well below the necessary replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman.” 3 Changes in a country’s birth rate are not simply a data point; rather, birth rates relate to a society’s overall viability. As the birth dearth increasingly affects every facet of human life, it is not surprising that this issue is gripping the attention of leaders around the globe. Its magnitude transcends almost every other major concern.

With more and more Americans choosing not to bring children into the world, our nation is slowly dying. This slow death can be attributed to many different factors – a loss of religious faith, fewer marriages and more divorces, a society that has become more mobile and less rooted in family and community, a pandemic which forced us all online and away from each other, and a host of other issues.

Even our political climate and culture discourage people from having children. We only need to look to Hollywood to understand this. Repeatedly, we have seen celebrities claim they want a small family due to environmental concerns, “overpopulation” and similar reasons.

Recognizing how difficult it can be to resist the political and cultural forces that exist in our world today, we celebrate Buffer Insurance’s decision to encourage families to embrace the gift of children. Buffer Insurance is a light in the darkness and we pray that many other companies follow their example.
