Obama's Executive Order Forcing Taxpayer Funded Embryonic Stem Cell Research Ignores Will of NJ Voters -- NJ Citizens Urged to Contact the White House

MEDIA ADVISORY, March 16 /Christian Newswire/ -- On November 6, 2007, New Jersey voters soundly rejected a scheme to borrow $450 million for stem cell research because our citizens did not want more debt and higher taxes for impractical and immoral embryonic stem cell research. It was the first time in 17 years that the voters of New Jersey defeated a public question. On March 9, 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order forcing citizens from NJ and all across American to federally subsidize embryonic stem cell research through their tax dollars.

"Just 16 months ago, the voters of New Jersey said NO to government-sponsored embryonic stem cell research. Unfortunately, the President's action ignores the express will of NJ voters and will make taxpayers complicit in subsidizing research activities that they do not support," said Marie Tasy, Executive Director of New Jersey Right to Life.

"It is fiscally and morally irresponsible for the federal government to be involved in the subsidizing of stem cell research that has never produced cures and involves the killing of human embryos," said Tasy. She urged NJ citizens to contact the White House to express their outrage over Obama's decree forcing taxpayers to fund human embryo killing, especially since voters here delivered such an overwhelming and resounding rejection of this unethical and impractical research at the polls.

"Without any proof or evidence to substantiate the assertion, President Obama stated that 'the majority of Americans . . . have come to consensus that we should pursue this research.' Yet if the defeat of a taxpayer-funded embryonic stem cell referendum in New Jersey serves as any indicator, then the majority of Americans would also surely reject such a measure if given all the facts and the opportunity to vote on the matter," said Tasy.

"Obama's executive order forcing American taxpayers to fund human embryonic stem cell research also revoked a June 22, 2007 executive order implemented by President Bush which promoted and funded adult stem cell research. Many researchers originally in favor of embryonic stem cell research are now admitting that the advances made with various types of adult stem cell research are superior and have rendered embryonic stem cell research 'obsolete.'"

"Far from showing respect for opposing views, the President has demonstrated contempt for American citizens who do not want their tax dollars used to perform experimental research in which embryonic human beings are vivisected and killed. In addition to causing cancerous tumors and immune rejection, it is a well known fact that embryonic stem cell research has produced zero cures, while various types of adult stem cell research have successfully treated 73 illnesses and diseases. By pandering to the Big Biotech Moneyed Interests and revoking support for adult stem cell research which has a proven success rate, Obama's professed concern 'to ease human suffering' rings hollow and is exposed for what it really is: nothing more than politics masquerading as science," said Tasy.
