A fine and up to a year in jail

Elderly pro-lifer arrested for trespass at his San Mateo parish pleads not guilty; trial set for Jan. 22

Ross Foti, the pro-life activist arrested after coming onto the grounds of St. Matthew's Church in San Mateo last November, pleaded not guilty to charges of trespass on Dec. 27.

Foti, 73, has long been a controversial figure at St. Matthew's. Last year, parents of children at the parish school began complaining about Foti's truck, displaying graphic signs of aborted babies, which he parked on a public street adjacent to the school.

Pro-Life New Year's Resolutions for 2008

On January 22nd of this year we have to sadly admit that our country has lived with unfettered, legal access to abortion for thirty-five long, brutal years. Not only have millions of innocent lives been unjustly snuffed out in America but scores of millions more lives have been shattered in its wake. In the face of this national disgrace we must re-commit ourselves to being the solution to a problem of our own making. We can never accept it as the cultural status quo. So, at the beginning of our year, let's put a few good pro-life New Year's resolutions on the top of our "to do" lists this year.

First, let's look at our 2007 resolutions. A year ago I asked you to do four things: To find the local abortion clinic in your community and pray there at least three times in 2007; to find the local crisis pregnancy center and support it; to speak up in some forum and defend life, be it on the internet, in a letter to the editor, or in conversations with friends, family and co-workers; and finally, to boycott the businesses that fund the death industry especially though the Life Decisions International corporate boycott list ( www.fightpp.org).

I know that these are not always easy or simple things to do but they are basic to our conscious refusal to get wrapped up in easy compliance with the abortion culture. If, by some chance, you have not been able to do them, make them part of your regular list of "highly important things."

The 2008 resolutions focus on the Catholic Church's comprehensive view of the fight for life which has to do as much with the sanctity of marriage and the family as with the defense of life itself. Here are three pro-life New Year's resolutions for your 2008 list of priorities:

  1. BE WISE: 2008 is the 40th anniversary of the papal encyclical on birth control, Humanae Vitae. Read it! Learn why the Catholic Church is still the leading voice of conscience about the single most influential factor in creating and maintaining the abortion culture - contraception;
  2. BE VIGILANT: After you read Humanae Vitae you will understand the evil of contraception. It is a demon that enters into the sanctuary of a marriage. Chase it out of your marriage with the same vigor as you would chase an intruder out of your home. And then, make sure your kids and grandkids know why contraception is not a benign "lifestyle choice" and is the worst possible preparation for marriage;
  3. BE A PRAYER WARRIOR: Join HLI's St. Michael the Archangel Campaign and pray every day for the conversion of abortionists. Abortion doesn't just happen. Someone with a medical degree and sharp instruments commits these crimes against humanity and makes loads of money off the death of innocents. These people need serious conversion, and our prayers will bring many of them out of the darkness and into the Light.

Speaking of which, the "Light of Christ" is the theme of this Sunday's Solemnity of the Three Kings (Epiphany). As Catholics we believe that Christ is the Light of the world and in particular of all those who sit in the darkness of death. May this new year bring us renewed commitment to shine Christ's Light both in the deepest recesses of our homes and families and to those who are caught up in the demonic abortion culture.

Human Life International wishes God's choicest blessings to all of you in 2008!

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer,

Pro-life Women Jailed 10 Years After Begging Abortionist To Quit

Pro-life Women Jailed 10 Years After Begging Abortionist To Quit

Lincoln, NE - January 4, 2008 - Pro-life activists Shari McKee and Melissa Abbink were jailed on December 28th, 2007, (Feast of the Holy Innocents), for speaking to Lincoln abortionist Winston Crabb on two occasions in front of his home 10 years ago. Abbink faces five months in jail while McKee has been sentenced to serve eight months behind bars.
    In February, 1998, both were charged with violating the "focused picketing" ordinance even though neither had signs and both incidents lasted only a minute each, just long enough to plead for the lives of pre-born children as he walked from his car to his house.
      After exhausting the appeals of the criminal cases, the convictions were upheld by the Nebraska Supreme Court on September 10, 1999. However, for reasons unknown, the mandate did not come down until September 28, 2005, over 6 years later!
        The last two years have been spent seeking a commutation. The women's cases were brought before the Board of Pardons, which was very sympathetic, but refused to act because the Board does not review misdemeanor cases. The Board referred the cases to the Mayor of Lincoln, who has refused to act claiming he does not have the authority to grant commutations.
          According to the women's attorneys, the Mayor clearly does have the authority to commute misdemeanor sentences.
            "We are asking pro-lifers to write to Mayor Beutler and ask him to commute the sentences of these two women," said Larry Donlan, Director of Rescue the Heartland. "Be sure to point out that the Pardon Board says he has the authority to do so. Be polite and remember, it is a commutation that we are after, not a pardon. Like the parable of the widow, we are seeking justice for these two brave, God-fearing women. Only Mayor Beutler has that ability to grant that justice. He can do so by merely picking up the phone."
              Mayor Chris Beutler

                        Des Moines, IA (LifeNews.com) -- At a campaign stop in Iowa, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told an audience that she favors abortion. Clinton meant her comments to come across in the same moderate tone former President Bill Clinton, but the way she phrased her position could come back to haunt her.

                        Tough year for Church in Mexico

                        Legalized abortion, publicly funded sex changes, decriminalizing prostitution, attacks on cathedral by leftist mobs

                        The Church in Mexico underwent a year of intense "social convulsions," engaging in direct confrontations with the coalition of leftist political parties that dominates the government of Mexico's capital city, according to "Recount 2007," published Dec. 30 by Desde la Fe ("From the Faith"), the weekly newspaper of the Archdiocese of Mexico. In addition, said "Recount 2007," the Church found itself doing battle with important sectors of the Mexican Congress and national political parties.

                        Kansas Legislator Apologizes, Settles Suit For Cockroach Clash

                        Kansas Legislator Apologizes, Settles Suit For Cockroach Clash

                        Operation Rescue sends a message that legal remedies for attacks on pro-lifers will be aggressively pursued.
                          Wichita, KS - January 2, 2008 - Kansas State Representative Vaughn Flora, has issued a formal apology to Operation Rescue President Troy Newman for attacking him during a gubernatorial debate at the Kansas State Fair in September, 2006.
                            Flora, a democrat, was earlier convicted of battery for striking Newman while he and another man were dressed in cockroach costumes to protest Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' support for abortion and her willingness to ignore filthy and dangerous conditions that had been recently documented at Kansas abortion clinics. Flora, who was at the debate wearing a Sebelius campaign t-shirt, struck Newman, tearing a mask from his face, and causing a laceration to his forehead. Flora received a 30 day suspended jail sentence and was ordered to pay fines and costs totaling of $228. Part of his sentence also included court mandated anger management classes.
                              However, after Flora's conviction, he told the Associated Press that he refused to apologize to Newman for the attack. Newman then sued Flora in civil court.
                                "I felt that the lawsuit was necessary to insure that Mr. Flora and others understood very clearly that physically attacking people with whom you do not agree is intolerable behavior for anyone, especially a State Legislator. There has to be serious consequences for that, in order to protect others."
                                  The suit was formally settled late last month. In addition to the apology, Newman received an undisclosed amount of money. Newman was represented by attorney Bryan Brown, Executive Director of the ArchAngel Institute.
                                    "In recent weeks, there has been an increase in attacks on pro-lifers across the nation. I hope this lawsuit sends a strong message that attacks on peaceful pro-lifers will not be tolerated, and that when attacks do occur, legal remedies will be aggressively pursued," said Newman.
