From CMMB: Cholera Death Toll Rises: Emergency Aid for Zambia

Dear Friends,
I’m sharing with you the heartbreaking reality of a cholera outbreak quickly spreading right now in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. It’s a deadly disease that modern medicine overcame more than 100 years ago. But in Zambia, women and children are dying because they don’t have access to clean water or vaccines. We believe no one should die from cholera.
I’m writing to you because they need your help todayIn Zambia, our country director, Batuke Walusiku-Mwewa says:
The poorest neighborhoods are suffering the most because they don’t have water and sanitation systems. Families rely on shallow wells which are easily contaminated by nearby latrines. Without clean water to drink or soap for hand washing, infection spreads quickly in these overcrowded communities. The women in CMMB’s microloan program can’t operate their food stalls. The government has shut them down until the outbreak is contained. That means entire families no longer have an income. People are frustrated and afraid. Many have died. But even in grief, cholera keeps mothers from having funerals for their children. Bodies must be turned over to the government. The chance of contamination or spread of infection is just too great.
