From CMMB: How Can a Simple Act of Kindness Save Lives?

Dr. Matt with a patient in South Sudan.

In remote, poor communities, hospitals and clinics often suffer from shortages of medicine, staff, equipment—even electricity and safe water—that put patients' lives at risk. Our volunteers bear witness to this sad reality and they share their stories, so we can share them with you. In South Sudan, our volunteer Dr. Matthew Jones says:
"When you see true poverty, and the desperation on a young mother's face, it's truly haunting."
Mary had a healthy pregnancy. Thanks to the services she received at St. Theresa Hospital, including access to medical care and essential medicines, both mother and child were safe. But shortly after Mary and baby Joyce got home, things started to go wrong.

In the first few weeks of Joyce's life, Mary started suffering from an infection, and as a result her milk ran out. Like most people in South Sudan, Mary lives in extreme poverty and her family couldn't afford the replacement formula needed for the baby to survive. When Mary arrived at St. Theresa Hospital, she was in a desperate state, clinging to her tiny baby. Baby Joyce was starving.

Thanks to the support of generous donors like you, St. Theresa Hospital had enough formula to feed baby Joyce for the next six months of her life.

Dr. Matthew explained, "We said goodbye to Mary and Joyce, sending them back to their life of uncertainty. We set a date for Joyce to return with a possibility, but not a certainty, of more formula. A thin thread connecting their lives to ours."
We were able to save a baby’s life. Your donations saves lives too. You make our work possible. YOU keep women and children alive.

Donate now, and your gift goes twice as far during our Advent match campaign. Your gift of $100 = $200 today!

As we open our hearts during the Christmas season, Pope Francis reminds us, “A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that individual can be you.” We’re blessed because you are a part of our compassionate community.
