From CMMB: "I carried her to the hospital, but it was too late."

Susan's father, Joseph, stands where his daughter is buried

"I carried my daughter on my bike as fast as I could, but it was too late. The hospital was too far and my daughter and her baby died before we got there."
These are the words of Joseph, a father who lost his daughter and grandchild to complications from childbirth.
Like 90 percent of women in South Sudan, Susan was planning to deliver her second baby at home. She went into labor on Friday afternoon, with her aunt by her side. After more than two days in excruciating pain, she was struggling to breathe.

That was when Joseph picked up his daughter and got on his bike. It was a difficult journey and he had to stop often, as Susan was in and out of consciousness. Halfway there, she stopped breathing and her heart stopped. So too, did the heartbeat of her baby.
“Susan was a good mother. She left behind Amina, her three-year-old daughter. What will happen to Amina? What is life here without a mother?” - Joseph, Father of Susan
South Sudan, where Susan lived, has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. No woman should die giving life - they need your help.

Your gift of $100, $200, $500, or any amount, can save the lives of pregnant women and their babies by improving access to emergency transportation, skilled birth attendants, and critical medicines. All gifts made before December 31st will be matched and your impact will be doubled.
