Palliative care, children, and non-human personhood

But seeing kids only in terms of cost is a big mistake. It is true that kids require a massive commitment of time and energy. But kids are investments. And the returns are incredible, though rarely easy. Children are image bearers, not luxury goods. To think about kids only in terms of how they impact our wallets is to completely miss the point. read more >> Personhood granted to Mar Menor lagoon Spain has granted legal personhood  to Mar Menor,  Europe's largest salt water lagoon. The new law came after a citizen-led push to provide better protection for the lagoon's threatened ecosystem. While certainly well intentioned, giving personhood status to this body of water only serves to diminish the perceived value and rights of actual persons—born and pre-born human beings created in the image of God.  read more >> Personhood on the ground Personhood: A unique perspective on life issues The Personhood movement understands that all humans, including the pre-born, are equal and deserving of rights. Our race, sex, age, economic status, developmental stage, level of dependency, physical and mental abilities, medical prognosis, manner of conception, contribution to society, and wantedness do not change our humanness. Personhood allows us to speak biblical and biological truth into the entire spectrum of sanctity-of-life issues, including destructive embryonic research, cloning, unethical reproductive technologies, newly emerging biotechnologies, transhumanism, assisted suicide, and euthanasia.  Regardless of circumstances, each human life has immeasurable worth in the eyes of God—an inestimable, intrinsic value that must be acknowledged by the culture and protected in its code of law.
