“Unadulterated scandal”
Head of San Francisco Catholic Charities and local priest give money to No on 8 campaign; two Southern California priests donate to ‘Obama for America’
Brian Cahill, executive director of San Francisco Catholic Charities, has donated $500 to the No on Proposition 8 campaign, according to political contribution records on file with the California Secretary of State.
Cahill made the donation to “No on 8, Equality for All” on Aug. 5, the records revealed.
“This is not surprising at all,” says A Shepherd’s Voice, the blog site of Fr. John Malloy, which broke the news on Oct. 31. “During Mr. Cahill's tenure (which thankfully ends this year), Catholic Charities: installed a ‘married’ lesbian as their treasurer; had male transvestite and same-sex ‘marriage’ activist ‘Donna Sachet’ entertain at their parties; embarked on the disastrous partnership with Family Builders by Adoption, which is being dissolved in June 2009.”
In addition to the contribution to No on 8 by Cahill, Fr. Malloy’s blog also pointed out that Jesuit Fr. Cameron Ayers of St. Agnes parish in San Francisco contributed $100 to defeat the measure, which would ban same-sex marriages in California. According to records published on the Secretary of State’s web site, Ayers made his contribution on June 23 to “Human Rights Campaign California Marriage PAC – No on Proposition 8.”
“During Fr. Ayer's pastorate, he led his flock at the 2006 San Francisco ‘Gay Pride’ parade,” according to A Shepherd’s Voice.
“So while our bishops (including our own Archbishop George Niederauer) are spending their time, talent, and treasure to defend marriage, and encouraging us to do the same, they are being undercut by these guys in their own dioceses,” said Fr. Malloy’s blog. “This is pure unadulterated scandal.”
Two additional political contributions by priests have been brought to the attention of California Catholic Daily by our readers and confirmed by checking filings with the Federal Elections Commission. In both instances, the contributions were to the “Obama for America” campaign.
Fr. Fred Bailey, pastor of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Aliso Viejo, donated $500 to the Obama campaign on June 20, then another $250 on Oct. 2. On the FEC filing form, Fr. Bailey’s employer is shown as the parish and his address as the parish address.
Fr. Arthur Holquin, pastor of Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, gave $250 to the Obama campaign on July 7, according to FEC records. Listed as Fr. Holquin’s employer is “Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange,” and his occupation is listed as “Roman Catholic priest.”
Both Corpus Christi and Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano are in the Diocese of Orange.
