Planned Parenthood launches drive to stop funding cuts as California’s budget crisis reaches disastrous proportions, pro-lifers see massive deficit as rare chance to defund abortion giant
Now that California voters have overwhelmingly rejected a package of budget measures and the state faces a more than $20 billion deficit, Planned Parenthood affiliates in the state are sending out urgent email alerts to their supporters pleading with them to contact the legislature to prevent any reduction in the millions of taxpayer money Planned Parenthood receives each year.
On Tuesday, May 19, voters rejected by huge margins four ballot initiatives proposed by the governor and the legislature to narrow the budget gap. After the measures failed, state officials said this year’s deficit could reach as high as $24 billion and that the state could run out of money as soon as July. Two days after the special election, Planned Parenthood affiliates in California began sending emails to their supporters imploring them to contact their legislators immediately. “We need your immediate help because the Governor is attempting to solve the state's budget crisis by cutting family planning,” wrote Darrah D. Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties in one such email message.
