Gallup Poll Confirmed by Passage of Georgia GOP Human Life Amendment Resolution

ATLANTA, May 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the state Republican Party convention in Savannah, GA the Georgia GOP passed a resolution that called for a Human Life Amendment to establish protection for all Georgians under the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution from the moment of fertilization until natural death.

The resolution stated, "Whereas the Georgia Republican Party has a long tradition of strong support for traditional family values including the Right to Life for all Georgians from fertilization to natural death... Be it therefore resolved this May 16th, 2009 that the Georgia State Republican Party Convention do hereby reaffirm our support for families and values as presented in the National Republican Party Platform and call for support for a human life amendment to the Georgia Constitution and endorsees making clear that the protections under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution apply to unborn children...".

Dan Becker, President of Georgia Right to Life noted, "I commend the Georgia Republican Party for calling for a human life amendment to the Georgia Constitution. In doing so, they establish that every human life deserves protection under our law from the earliest moment of development until natural death. A Human Life Amendment would assure that every human life was recognized as a person and afforded the full protection of our Constitution. "

The timeliness of this resolution was echoed by a Gallup Poll conducted May 7-10th, 2009 which found that more Americans consider themselves pro-life (51%) than pro-abortion (42%). This is the first time in 15 years that more Americans have considered themselves pro- life versus pro-abortion.

In November 2006 a poll conducted by Strategic Vision asked Georgia voters if they would be in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade, 57% of the voters said yes. Florida was the next highest state with 38% of the voters wanting to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Becker noted, "These polls show us that as the public is educated about what abortion really is that public opinion is shifting in favor of life. It also indicates that Georgia voters have an even stronger desire to see life valued."
