Lifeissues.net Newsletter 456

Dear Friends for Life,

Japan's Demographic Winter: Japan's stock market is down 80% from its all time high and real estate is down 60%. Its birthrate is 1.25 children per woman (2.1 is needed). Those over 60 years of age have increased from 12 to 21% in the last 20 years, the oldest in the world. The government has now announced that it will pay $275 a month subsidy to families for every child. But Russia (birth rate 1.17) has done this for several years without significant results. Isn't it interesting that both countries, now desperate for more people, still allow abortion-on-demand?

Contraception - Women Obese - Newborns Too Thin: In March, the University of Iowa reported that women who conceive within a month of taking birth control pills were shown to have more premature babies, or full term babies with low birth rate. Another study at the University of Texas has revealed that users of the contraceptive shot are significantly more likely than other women to become obese. This second finding has been known for a long time.

Teenage Girls Suffer From Depression: Research reported in the Journal of Health Economics by Drs. Sabia and Reese found that sexually active teenage girls have twice the rate of depression compared to their non-active counterparts. The numbers were 19% compared to 9.2%.

Poland - The Bishops Really Mean It: They have issued a document which at one point clearly tells Catholic politicians that if they support abortion directly they risk excommunication.

God Bless
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Quote) "A healthy state can exist only when the men and women who make it up lead clean, vigorous, healthy lives; when the children are so trained that they shall endeavor, not to shirk difficulties, but to overcome them; not to seek ease, but to know how to wrest triumph from toil and risk." -President Theodore Roosevelt

ITEM #1. Myths of Infidelity

The people who are running from bed to bed creating disasters for themselves and everyone else don't seem to know what they are doing. They just don't get it. But why should they? There is a mythology about infidelity that shows up in the popular press and even in the mental health literature that is guaranteed to mislead people and make dangerous situations even worse.

ITEM #2. Scientists: Embryonic Stem Cell Research Showing Little Progress 28 Years Later

In the 28 years that scientists have been toying with embryonic stem cells in animals and humans, not one human patient has even been treated. Despite President Barack Obama forcing taxpayers to fund the research, that destroys human life, scientists don't expect that to change anytime soon.

ITEM #3. Nancy Pelosi, Catholic Without A Clue

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seems to be planning a second career as a theologian. Unfortunately, she never gets one Catholic fact right. Interviewed by Eleanor Clift for Newsweek's year-end issue, Pelosi capped an 18-month succession of clamorously incorrect public statements about what Catholics believe with her own take on the meaning of freedom.

ITEM #4. A climate-change moment for marriage

(R)eports published recently in the United States and Britain basically agree about family trends: fewer people are marrying and more are just living together; divorce rates have (consequently) fallen; around one in four children now lives with a single mother or, sometimes, father; counting step-children, an even higher proportion of children lives apart from their biological father -- one in three in the US; fewer children are being born -- in Britain the total fertility rate is just under two per women and in the US just over 2.1. These are overall figures; the picture changes significantly for different sub-groups of the population.

ITEM #5. A Primer on Stem Cells: Stem Cells: What are They?

The humanity of the human embryo is not a religious question, but a matter of empirical fact. What is at stake at present is the production of tiny human lives for reasons entirely unrelated to the good of those lives. A new watershed is about to be crossed in our nation no less momentous than the one crossed in 1973 when the Supreme Court invented the constitutional right of abortion. And given the fact that there are morally acceptable alternative sources for stem cells - for example, stem cells found in adult bone marrow, adipose tissue, fetal umbilical cords and placenta, which, according to the latest research, promise equal if not greater results than embryonic stem cells - the question of proceeding with the making and destroying of human embryos should not even be an issue. After the grave mistakes and horrors of the past century, shouldn't we resist the temptation to watch silently while an entire class of human beings, in this case embryonic human life, is resigned
to a moral status no higher than a laboratory rat?

ITEM #6. Degrading Sex, Government Style

At the United Nations, the words "safe motherhood" in international agreements, have become code for efforts to mandate legal abortion in countries signing onto such agreements. The logic? Abortion (unsafe for children; destructive of motherhood) is claimed to be safer than childbirth for the mother sometimes. Likewise, in the United States, take no meaning from the title "Safe Schools" czar. It means whatever its inventors claim. In the present case, it seems to mean safe from the influence of those opposing the early and degrading sexualization of minor children.

ITEM #7. In Embryonic Stem Cell Research, End Does Not Justify the Means

Let's be clear on this: Catholics do indeed oppose medical research that requires the destruction of human embryos. Millions of other Americans, religious and otherwise, share this moral conviction. We emphatically support science and medical advances - but we oppose the use of immoral means to achieve seemingly good goals, even when they include possible medical cures. Why? Because if the bloody legacy of the last century has taught us anything, it's that the end never justifies the means.

ITEM #8. Planned Parenthood Does More Than 1.1 Million Abortions Annually Worldwide

While IPPF's total financial intake dipped, its abortion business boomed. The organization provided almost 428,000 "abortion services" to young people alone, with a staggering 1,134,549 total number of such services - almost double the number from 2007 - across the globe.

ITEM #9. Euro Parliament's Human Dignity Caucus Launches New Organisation

Following the successful launch of the Working Group on Human Dignity in the European Parliament, some of those involved have now set up the Dignitas Humanae Institute (Institute for Human Dignity) to promote, in the political sphere, greater recognition that human beings are made in the image and likeness of God.

ITEM #10. Poll Shows Most Favour Protecting Embryonic Humans

The latest poll in Ireland on human embryos' rights shows a substantial majority of the public support enshrining protections for embryonic humans in law. Millward Brown IMS polled a quota-controlled sample of 943 people aged 18-plus.

ITEM #11. Federal study acknowledges links between breast cancer and abortion, contraception

A study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, concluded in April 2009, showed a strong correlation between the use of oral contraceptives and a particularly deadly form of breast cancer. The study found that the connection was highest among women who began using oral contraceptives while they were teenagers.

ITEM #12. Teenager dies after taking contraceptive pill

Reports that a 17-year-old German girl died at Basel University Hospital from of a pulmonary embolism caused by a contraceptive pill were confirmed on 22 December 2009 by Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products. A spokesperson for the agency said that, 'a 17-year-old died of a pulmonary embolism around 1 month after taking a hormonal contraceptive.
