Were there to be no support in the whole history of ethical and moral thought, were there no acknowledged confirmation from medical science, were the history of legal opinion to the contrary, we would still have to conclude on the basis of God's Holy Word that the unborn child is a person in the sight of God. He is protected by the sanctity of life graciously given to each individual by the Creator, Who alone places His image upon man and grants them any right to life which they have.

40 Days For Life: DAY 17: They couldn't care less

Dear Deacon John,

Abortion is not safe. It is only considered successful if a baby dies.

But it is a myth to think abortion is safe for the mothers. Thus far in this 40 Days for Life campaign, we know of nine ambulance calls to abortion facilities.

In one instance, a woman who'd left an abortion facility passed out while she was waiting for a bus. It was the 40 Days for Life vigil participants who called for help ... not the abortion center.

When the abortion staff saw what was going on, they got angry and said they'd take over ... and that the woman didn't need an ambulance. Thank God for the volunteers! The staff couldn't care less.

The ambulances seldom have their sirens or lights flashing and they are often asked to enter though the back of the abortion facility. The abortion centers don't want anyone to know there's been a problem.

"More interested in their reputation, so it seems, than the well-being of the women who visit them," said the local 40 Days for Life leader.

Abortion is safe? Never.

Lisbon, Portugal

One of the volunteers at the 40 Days for Life vigil in Lisbon said a young woman left the abortion center and wanted to talk.

She said she was pregnant with her first child ... and scheduled for an abortion. She said she knows it isn't right, but her boyfriend is the one pushing the abortion. The volunteer asked her, "Do you have a doctor?"

"No," she said. The vigil participant made a quick phone call and set up an appointment with a physician.

After a consultation with the doctor, the young woman had joyful news to share: "The baby is going to be born!"

Nashville, Tennessee

"God is so good to allow us to take part in helping moms choose life for their babies!" said Marilyn, the 40 Days for Life coordinator in Nashville.

Vigil participants saw a woman headed towards Planned Parenthood and offered to help her. As they talked, the volunteers showed her a fetal model and explained that's what her baby looks like at this stage of her pregnancy.

"After she held the model in her hands," Marilyn said, "she started crying."

The volunteers made plans to accompany her to a pregnancy help center for a free ultrasound. "She is happy that she has changed her mind about the abortion."

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Lord, we are yours. Thank you for breathing into us the breath of life. Thank you for claiming us as your own. May our words and actions in defense of human life proclaim to all the world that you alone are Lord of life and death, Lord of our freedom and of our choices.
