Lifeissues.net Newsletter #495

Dear Friends for Life,

Canadian poll shows that most say abortion is morally wrong. Out of Carleton University School of Journalism, this poll found that: 89% of respondents agreed that "nothing is more important than family"; 67% agreed that marriage by definition is between a man and a woman; 60% agreed that "abortion is morally wrong."

Abortion drug is approved in the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the new "Ella" drug. This is said to prevent pregnancy up until five days after intercourse. This, of course, is nonsense. If ovulation has occurred, sperm swim through the female genital tract in as little as 30 minutes and she then can be fertilized within that half hour. The problem here is that almost fifty years ago pro-abortion people redefined the word conception so it would no longer mean the time of union of sperm and egg, but rather the time of implantation within the uterus. By that definition, even though this new drug prevents a five-day-old living human embryo from planting and therefore kills him or her, this drug is now falsely called a contraceptive.

The reason the backers of Ella can promote it as "more effective" is because Ella, like its close chemical cousin RU 486 - blocks progesterone receptors in the uterine lining. This destroys the capacity of the mother's reproductive organs to produce the progesterone necessary to support the embryo through the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Tell others about the new abortion drug "Ella". Pray for those who are involved in abortions which are exterminating our unborn children - God's unique creations.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1. The Truth Behind Abortion Pills

The abortion industry is in celebratory mode these days. They are rapidly achieving a long hoped-for goal of making chemical abortions more acceptable and easily accessible. The problem is they are resorting to profound and dangerous deception to get what they want.

ITEM #2. Two More Women's Deaths Linked To RU-486

Two more deaths have been linked to use of the abortion drug RU-486, according to doctors at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pro-life leaders are warning that countless more women could stand threatened now that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the drug ella, which is similar to RU-486, as an "emergency contraceptive."

ITEM #3. Russia sees rise in pro-life views

Joseph Meaney thinks the change in public opinion, reflected in the Levada poll, can be attributed to the church in Russia and to plain, cold facts. "The fact is that Russia is dying out. The population has actually shrunk by over 12 million people just since 1992," he explains. "So literally, Russia is a dying country, and abortion is one of the main reasons for it."

ITEM #4. Families Teach Meaning Of Life, Says Pontiff

The family is fundamental because it is the first place where people learn the meaning of life, Benedict XVI is affirming.

ITEM #5. Doctors React to Winner of Nobel in Medicine

In vitro fertilization has brought happiness to many couples, but at an "enormous cost," says the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations in response to the inventor of IVF being chosen for the Nobel prize in medicine. Robert Edwards, a Cambridge reproductive biologist, was announced as the winner on Monday.

"Although IVF has brought happiness to the many couples who have conceived through this process, it has done so at an enormous cost," a statement from the federation (FIAMC) affirmed. "That cost is the undermining of the dignity of the human person. Many millions of embryos have been created and discarded during the IVF process.

ITEM #6. Columnist Speaks From The Heart On Down Syndrome

When Irish columnist and TV presenter Brendan O'Connor's daughter Mary was born with Down Syndrome he and his wife Sarah were heartbroken, but every day she mends their hearts a little bit more. Writing in the Sunday Independent, O'Connor gave a searingly honest and heartfelt account of their experience in coming to terms with their daughter's condition.

ITEM #7. Organ Transplants Can Kill People

Debating the wisdom of organ transplantation has finally become a matter of public discussion. The fact that it has taken forty years to get to this point is disturbing. The delay is, if nothing else, a testimony to the slithery nature of views propounded by organ donation proponents. But we are finally having honest discussion in the public square.

ITEM #8. Bioethics Watch: The Most Amazing Recovery

Scientists have invented an efficient way to produce apparently safe alternatives to human embryonic stem cells without destroying embryos, a long-sought step toward bypassing the moral morass surrounding one of the most promising fields in medicine.

ITEM #9. Even in petri dish, life merits protection

I started out as an embryo. So did you and everyone else who shares this planet with us. And there is great significance to this irrefutable fact beyond the shared experience.

Time magazine's cover story this week about the influence of life in the womb states the case: "We are the way we are because it's in our genes: the DNA we inherited at conception." Yes, upbringing and environment have a huge impact on our lives, but one thing never changes until our last natural breath: our DNA. Each human embryo is unique -- it does not have the same DNA of the mother or father. That cell not only becomes us, it is us.

ITEM #10. "A Life Like Yours"

Perhaps families are informed that the child will have Down Syndrome, or perhaps a birth defect that will lead either to early death, or to a lifetime of challenges.

The pressure on such families to abort is often enormous. They are told, "It is the right thing to do" and, "You should not make the child suffer." Some are even made to feel they are doing something "unethical" by bringing forth such children. There are also time pressures placed on such parents. Doctors often want the decision to terminate, made quickly, within a matter of days.

ITEM #11. Fewer Children, Later Marriage, More Divorce In Canadian Families: Study

"Today's families are smaller. Adults wait longer to marry if they do so at all. Common law unions are no longer just a preliminary or trial stage before marriage but, for many, an alternative to marriage," the study reveals. The study found that 'Married with children' families now represent only 39% of all families, versus 55% in 1981, with cohabiting couples with children, and married couples with no children, now also representing about 38% of families.

ITEM #12. Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer Identifies Six Myths About Breast Cancer

The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer has published an open letter to editors at Prevention asking them to make corrections in its story, "Twelve myths to ignore about breast cancer," for the sake of protecting women's lives.  The Coalition is also publishing a real list of breast cancer myths spread by the cancer charity industry. They are:
