Lifeissues.net Newsletter #495

Dear Friends for Life,

Good News. World-wide maternal deaths have dropped sharply. The British medical journal Lancet reported that deaths of women during childbirth dropped by a startling 35% from 1980 – 2008, from more than a 500,000 yearly to 343,000. This new report, by researchers from the University of Washington and the University of Queensland in Australia, succeeds earlier reports that the rate had remained fairly steady at about a half-million with only modest improvements in some areas. The Lancet's editor commented, “The overall message for the first time in a generation is one of persistent and welcome progress.“

At a special convention in New York recently, the Russian Federation announced good news. Finally, more babies are being born than are being aborted. As a result of this, last year Russia reported its first annual population increase since 1995.

Continue to be Christ's Presence in society. Perseverence and your voice are most important. Have a nice weekend!

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Quote) "Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament. There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth. . . by. . . which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained and take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires." - J.R.R. (Focus on Asia): "China: HIV/AIDS" - HIV/AIDS is still regarded by many as "adult business."  We now know children and young people are the key to halting the spread of the epdimic around the world-and in China. Few people recognize children, young people and AIDS as a prominent issue.  But data tell us otherwise: http://www.unicef.org/china/hiv_aids.html

ITEM #1. Kinsey minions continue child sex abuse

Exclusive: Judith Reisman exposes horrific 'scientific' studies of kids' sexuality

While Obama and Hillary apologize for the American scientists who conducted vicious sex experiments on Guatemalans, the followers of the American scientist responsible for the rapes of thousands of infants and children continue his child abuse legacy untainted. The Kinsey Institute just announced its collaboration with another agency of sex and "condom use," using nearly 6,000 subjects. The new Kinsey study continues its old drum beat: "Sex" any way and wherever you get it.

ITEM #2. Historic Turnaround in Europe Preserves Conscience Rights

A dramatic legislative reversal reaffirmed the conscience rights of medical professionals and institutions in Europe last week. The Council of Europe's legislature considered a resolution calling for onerous restrictions on conscientious objection, including stripping protections for doctors who object to performing abortions.

ITEM #3. India: Fighting gendercide, one baby girl at a time

A curious and tragic disconnect marks India's attitude to its female population. One third of the seats in the Indian Parliament are now occupied by women, but the practice of female feticide and female infanticide remains widespread.

ITEM #4. China's Thirty Years War Against its Own People Slated to Continue

There is the demographic snare that the one-child policy has set for the Chinese people. Because of the radical cutback in births, the Chinese population is aging faster than any human population in human history. The worker/dependency ratio is unsustainable. How can an only child support two parents and four grandparents in retirement? I am afraid that this will lead the Chinese government to embark upon a "one-grandparent policy" in years to come, in which tens of millions of elderly Chinese will be urged to accept euthanasia, perhaps in return for their only grandchild being allowed to go to college. Forced abortion and forced euthanasia are two sides of the same debased coin.

ITEM #5. World's First Global Atheistic Civilization Headed For Disaster: Former Czech President

The world's first global and deliberately atheistic civilization is heading for disaster, the first president of the modern Czech Republic told an audience this week. Vaclav Havel, one of the most respected political and literary figures in recent European history, said that the West “has lost its connection with the infinite and with eternity,“ with the result that “endless consumer collectivism is giving birth to a new type of loneliness.“

Speaking at the opening of the Forum 2000 conference in Prague this week, Havel said that unless mankind comes to its senses and becomes more humble, its global, atheistic civilization is doomed.

ITEM #6. Medical Research and Human Dignity

Ever since 1996, the law has been clear: The federal government may not pay for research in which existing human embryos are “destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death.“

ITEM #7. When the Kids Grow Up and Find Out About the Test Tubes

When I do presentations on in vitro fertilization, audience members sometimes ask whether test tube babies experience psychological problems as they grow up.

ITEM #8. How the First Nine Months Shape the Rest of Your Life

What makes us the way we are? Why are some people predisposed to be anxious, overweight or asthmatic? How is it that some of us are prone to heart attacks, diabetes or high blood pressure?

There's a list of conventional answers to these questions. We are the way we are because it's in our genes: the DNA we inherited at conception. We turn out the way we do because of our childhood experiences: how we were treated and what we took in, especially during those crucial first three years. Or our health and well-being stem from the lifestyle choices we make as adults: what kind of diet we consume, how much exercise we get.

But there's another powerful source of influence you may not have considered: your life as a fetus. The kind and quantity of nutrition you received in the womb; the pollutants, drugs and infections you were exposed to during gestation; your mother's health, stress level and state of mind while she was pregnant with you  -  all these factors shaped you as a baby and a child and continue to affect you to this day.

ITEM #9. Preparing for Marriage I: Remote Preparation

Today many persons soon to be married are far more occupied with and interested in their wedding than they are with their marriage. Moreover, today there are competing and contradictory views about marriage. Some feminists claim that a heterosexual, misogynist patriarchy invented marriage as a way of enslaving women. Advocates of a secularist, atheistic (or at most nontheistic) understanding of human "persons" judge marriage a legal contract between persons, whether of opposite sexes or of the same sex, presently required to obtain certain benefits. They claim that marriage is a human invention...

ITEM #10. Preparation for Marrigae II: Proximate Preparation One

Earlier I offered suggestions about the "remote" preparation for marriage that begins during infancy - even in the womb - and lasts until the onset of puberty or early adolescence. This article and two others will present ideas about the "proximate" preparation for marriage: this one identifies what the term "proximate preparation" means and focuses on the some of the major elements that ought to make up this proximate preparation. ... The term "proximate preparation" refers to a very long period of time because it extends from the end of the "remote preparation," the onset of puberty or early adolescence, until the beginning of the "immediate preparation" for marriage that should take place during the months and weeks before the "nuptials" or "wedding" of the engaged couple is to take place.

ITEM #11. Catholics Protest Pending Population Control Legislation in Philippines

Protests loom in the Philippines as Catholic leaders and lay groups monitor bills that would enact national population control measures. Two measures pending in the Philippines promote “reproductive health.“ They mandate dispensing artificial birth control, including potential abortifacients.  Both bills contain substantially similar language.

ITEM #12. The Influence of Religiosity on Contraceptive Use among Roman Catholic Women in the United States

Abstract: This study uses data from National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to determine the effect of religious belief among Roman Catholics on contraceptive use and to make recommendations for catechesis and education.
