This year’s general election campaign for U.S. Senate in Florida is a rarity: a contest among three major candidates. The Republican, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, and the Democrat, South Florida Congressman Kendrick Meek, have staked out the right and left political ground. Gov. Charlie Crist, running as an independent, has tried to claim the middle.

Normally we would be inclined to favor a moderate candidate. But Mr. Crist, who was calling himself “the true conservative” in the GOP primary campaign before he bolted the party in April, has made his lack of principles painfully clear. He has run away from his positions on a range of issues – health-care reform, offshore drilling and gay rights – in a duplicitous appeal for independent and Democratic support. A caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly is less startling.

Mr. Crist has shown that if elected Florida’s next U.S. senator, he would put his personal political interest ahead of what’s best for the state and the nation. There are already far too many politicians like that in Washington, D.C.

Of Mr. Crist’s opponents, we prefer Mr. Rubio. Unlike Mr. Meek – or Mr. Crist – Mr. Rubio is willing to confront head on the massive budget deficits that threaten to undermine American prosperity, prestige and power.

The former House speaker has pointed out, despite the political risk, the need for reform in Social Security and Medicare, two popular programs whose budgets are growing at unsustainable rates. He’s also the only candidate to suggest other significant spending cuts.

As for Mr. Crist, who knows where he really stands, and how long he might stay there? He insists he remains fiscally conservative, but he hasn’t come up with spending cuts beyond earmarks – less than 1 percent of the federal budget – and the old standbys of waste, fraud and abuse. How predictable.

He has ruled out reforms in Social Security, insisting a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants will bolster the program. That notion has been widely debunked by economists.

We don’t want Florida’s next senator to abandon his principles, but we are counting on him to find ways to get things done.

We endorse Marco Rubio.
