Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

HIV-Positive Man Cured? - In 2008, German doctors used an adult stem cell transplant to treat a leukemia patient. The patient had tested positive for HIV. After the transplant the virus was undetectable. Now two years later, he no longer takes anti-retroviral drugs. His doctors feel that with the passage of time, they now can state that he has been cured of his HIV infection. This is a first.

Stem Cells Help Aging Brain. - Researchers at University of South Florida have successfully used adult stem cells from human umbilical cord blood to enhance the survival and maturation of brain neurons. These are from young and old laboratory animals. It may have implications for postponing various degenerative diseases of the brain and possibly protecting from brain trauma.

ABC Studies Documented. - Dr. Gerard Nadal, a microbiologist at St. John's University in New York, plans to publish one study daily on his blog confirming the link between induced abortion and breast cancer. There are so many studies that it will take him several months to publish them all. (gerardnadal.com/category/breast-cancer)

[At present, a hugh tsunami is hitting Japan. We ask for your prayers. The damage and number of deaths most likely will be severe.]

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(A Thought) "he witness of their fidelity to the end was ever more powerful than the inspired words that so many of them spoke before surrendering everything to the Lord. In our own time, the price to be paid for fidelity to the Gospel is no longer being hanged, drawn and quartered but it often involves being dismissed out of hand, ridiculed or parodied. And yet, the Church cannot withdraw from the task of proclaiming Christ and his Gospel as saving truth, the source of our ultimate happiness as individuals and as the foundation of a just and humane society." (Benedict XVI on Newman beatification)

(Focus on Asia): "http://rss.cnn.com/~r/rss/cnn_world/~3/5hAMOnM-Xtc/index.html" target="_blank">Widespread destruction from Japan earthquake, tsunamis" - The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in at least 100 years unleashed walls of water Friday that swept across rice fields, engulfing towns, dragging houses onto highways and tossing cars and boats like toys, apparently killing hundreds and forcing the evaucations of tens of thousands.

*******************************************************

ITEM #1: First euthanasia clinic could open soon: Nitschke

Plans for Australia's first euthanasia clinic are likely to go ahead, said Exit International director Dr Philip Nitschke, with the proposed facility to be built either in Hobart or Adelaide, according to an AAP report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Dealing with population trends

Japan cannot lose any time in working out policies that will effectively cope with undesirable effects from this population trend, including the further weakening - economically and socially - of rural areas.

****************************************

ITEM #3: More trade, less hunger

The recent sharp spike in food prices and growing concerns about food security have sparked anxiety worldwide. The possibility of being unable to put food on the table fills parents with a deep sense of foreboding. And because the world's poorest people spend a higher proportion of their income on food, they are the worst affected, raising the risk that years of progress in reducing poverty could be reversed.

****************************************

ITEM #4: The Truth about Mental Illness

There is no denying the fact that certain people do suffer from one or more mental health issues either at one point in their life or throughout their entire life. However, there are alternatives to psychotropic medications even for those who have suffered their entire lives with mental illness. Putting highly toxic chemicals into your body in order to "manage" your condition when the method of action listed in the information provided by the manufacturer is "unknown" is, at the very least, dangerous.

****************************************

ITEM #5: Moves to rein in child pornography meet resistance in Japan

While it is illegal to produce or distribute child pornography in Japan, possessing it is not - an anomaly Japan shares with only one other G8 nation, Russia. The release last month of national police agency figures showing a dramatic rise in the number of known child pornography cases coincides with new calls for the government to take action. Yet, say campaigners, national legislators lack the political will to change the law.

****************************************

ITEM #6: Exposure to internet pornography among children/teenagers - a nowadays problem

As the internet gains increasing prominence in the lives of young people, their exposure to sexual materials also raises. This study focuses on different aspects of children/teenagers exposure to sexually explicit materials found on internet.

****************************************

ITEM #7 Vietnam: Forced abortions torment women

Women forced to have abortions in a northern Vietnam province say they suffer physically and spiritually, and are doing charity work to erase their sins and ease their consciences. Anna Le Thi Thu lives in Yen Bai province, has two children and seems to have a happy marriage. However, she says her heart is filled with anguish. "I'm seriously tormented by four abortions I've had since I got married 15 years ago," Thu said, adding she came close to dying after two of the terminations at local private clinics.

****************************************

ITEM #8: Indonesia: Hearing the silent cries of the mothers

It is common nowadays to see dozens of mothers of dead human rights fighters, standing silently across the road from the presidential palace. Dressed in black, holding black posters, banners and umbrellas, they say nothing. Onlookers might wonder what was going on. As a matter of fact, in silence, these women are crying out loud, seeking justice for their kidnapped or killed activists.

****************************************

ITEM #9: Teen Returns Home 2 Months After Hospital Turns Off Life Support

Comment: I've seen lots of people survive or recover after life support (usually a ventilator) is turned off soon after an illness or injury. One of the big problems is that ethicists or doctors don't give people enough time to recover, either because of "quality of life" concerns ("He/she will be a 'vegetable') or economics. Add the incentive of non-heartbeating organ donation and it's easy to see why people - especially young, previously healthy people - are at great risk of premature death. Unfortunately and too often, these recoveries are treated as virtual "miracles". -Nancy Valko,RN

ITEM #10: In midst of demographic collapse, Japan approves 'morning after' pill

"In 2010 Japan recorded 1.07 million births and 1.19 million deaths - the highest number of deaths since 1947 when the post-war health ministry began keeping records - resulting in a net loss of population. With Japan's well-below-replacement-level birth rate, and an ever-increasing number of deaths, the country's population figures showed a decline of 123,000 in 2010, the fourth consecutive year of demographic collapse.

****************************************

ITEM #11: More genetic problems with artificial stem cells

A Toronto-based research team has discovered "worrying" genetic flaws in artificially constructed "pluripotent" stem cells. Dr. Andras Nagy of the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, with Dr. Timo Otonkoski from the Biomedicum Stem Cell Center at the University of Helsinki, have identified genetic abnormalities associated with reprogramming adult cells to become induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.

****************************************

ITEM #12: Abstinence is the only way

I am a high school student. I am going to cut straight to the point. Condoms, whether given out for free or sold, should not be handed out in schools, because this practice conveys the idea that sex amongst high school students is permissible. Instead of teaching the students that it is fine to have sex before marriage, why don't they teach abstinence?
