Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

Dr. Margaret Ogola, the leading Kenyan and African pro-life humanitarian has died. Typical of her ongoing pro-life crusade was her comments recently in Cairo at a forum at the Kenyatta Hospital. She said that a woman in need of an antibiotic for her sick child would have to pay for the syringe, needle and the antibiotic, otherwise her child would not be treated. However the same woman seeking contraception could have every variety under the sun at a brand new family planning clinic next to her hospital completely free of charge, supplied by western nations.

Dr. John Smeaton of England's SPUC elaborated recently in Human Concern, "not one penny of 17 billion US dollars which the Cairo Conference agreed to spend will go to treating sick children. However a staggering 15 billion of these dollars will be spent on population control."

Dr. Ogola's leadership efforts were legend. In 1998 she was the National Executive Secretary for Health and Family Life at the Kenya Episcopal Conference. In 2002 she became the Kenya coordinator of HACI (Hope for African Children Initiative). She founded and managed the SOS HIV/AIDS Clinic.

John Smeaton, from the UK, visiting their home in Nairobi 10 years ago was "humbled by the simplicity with which she and her husband George, also a doctor, and their children carried out their selfless humanitarian work-this is something I will never forget."

Dr. Ogola served many years as a member of the Board of the International Right to Life Federation. "In my humble opinion (Dr. Willke) she will be simply irreplaceable. God bless her soul."

God Bless,
Fr. Jerry, OMI

(A Thought) "The family that recites the Rosary together reproduces something of the atmosphere of the household of Nazareth: its members place Jesus at the center; they share his joys and sorrows; they place their needs and their plans in his hands; they draw from him the hope and strength to go on." - Blessed Pope John Paul II

(Life): "A Thanksgiving gift: mother with aggressive cancer gives birth to healthy baby despite treatment" -  Erika's obstetrician initially thought the lump was a clogged milk duct or some other pregnancy related swelling and told the young mother to keep an eye on it. But by June, the lump had become noticeably larger and more painful. At this point, Erika's doctor ordered an ultrasound and biopsy.

ITEM #1: Kazakhstan's Population Grows by 1.1% in 2011

As of October 1, according to the Statistics Agency of Kazakhstan, the population reached 16,615,000 people, an increase of 1.1%, or 173,100 people since the beginning of 2011. The growth is mainly attributed to natural increase, the press service of the Kazakh MFA said.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Care for the orphans who aren't adopted

Millions of children around the globe lose their parents to extreme poverty, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, conflict, war and natural disasters, often forcing family members to relinquish and abandon their children to orphanages. People without education and jobs, and communities without economic strength and social welfare infrastructure, cannot support orphans.

****************************************

ITEM #3: What are Catholics who struggle with infertility to do?

Church teaching about interventions like IVF is clear - those that replace the marital act instead of merely assisting the marital act to achieve pregnancy are immoral. So what is a Catholic to do?

****************************************

ITEM #4: Leader in Embryonic Cell Research Abandons Ten-Year Project

Pro-life activists have been vocal in their opposition to the research because it requires the destruction of human embryos. While it has received the lion's share of attention from the scientific community and the media, embryonic stem-cell therapy "has yet to produce any treatments or cures," reported Baptist Press News. "By contrast, pro-lifers say, research using non-embryonic forms of stem cells - such as adult stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells - has been far more promising. Adult stem cells - found throughout the body - have produced 73 medical treatments, according to a tally by the Coalition of Americans for Research Ethics. In induced pluripotent stem cells, researchers reprogram adult skin cells into stem cells that have virtually the identical properties of embryonic ones."

ITEM #5: Down syndrome is focus of new blood test for pregnant women

Comment: When I joined the St. Louis Down Syndrome Assn. in 1982 when my Karen was born, I was amazed by the love and help I received from the other parents. I was especially moved because my husband's and my family were so nonsupportive. I asked these parents, "Where you like this before your child with DS was born?" Every parent told that no, their child made them that way. Accepting and loving a child with special needs changes people for the better. (PS. the pictures with this article are fantastic!) -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #6: Population older than 90 continues to increase

People who are 90 or older have nearly tripled in number since 1980, to 1.9 million, according to the first-ever census numbers on the age group.

****************************************

ITEM #7 Male cross-dressing 'lesbian' couple 'marries' after one has sex change surgery

Both men had wives and children before each divorced and entered a homosexual relationship with each other, in which the two cross-dressed as a "lesbian" pair.

****************************************

ITEM #8: Fatherless: New documentary questions morality of anonymous sperm donation industry

"Should we be conceiving children in the first place who will be deliberately denied the ability to know, and be known by, their father?" a woman asks in the trailer.

****************************************

ITEM #9: 'A world without people with Down syndrome.' At what cost?

However empathetic the intent may be, killing someone to spare him or her an uncertain future is as shortsighted as it is arrogant.

****************************************

ITEM #10: Astounding Video Depicts Unborn Baby's Full Development

An astounding new video is drawing rave reviews from pro-life advocates around the world for its depiction of the fetal development of an unborn baby.

****************************************

ITEM #11: Horror: 32-week unborn twins killed after hospital accidentally aborts healthy twin

When hospital staff realized the mistake, the woman reportedly underwent an emergency c-section, and the sick child was also aborted.

****************************************

ITEM #12: Rise in HIV/AIDS infections in the Russian Federation

Though a new report from UNAIDS reveals a drop in HIV/AIDS deaths and new infections in most regions of the world, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia there is little sign of the epidemic stabilising. Rates of HIV incidence are climbing in the region, with a 250% increase in the number of people living with HIV (410,000) in 2001 compared to 2010 (1.5 million). AIDS-related deaths also continue to rise in this part of the world according to the report, which has been published ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December.
