Dear Friends For Life,
Ectopic Pregnancies Increase From Progestin: According to FDA labeling on Plan B, "ectopic pregnancies account for approximately 2% of all reported pregnancies, but up to 10% of pregnancies reported in clinical studies with routine use of progestin only contraceptives." This is a five fold increase in the instances of potentially fatal side effects of drug usage. New Down Syndrome Test: An article in the New York Post detailed recently the discovery of a "new simple way to detect Down Syndrome in a fetus." It claims that this new method is more safe and more convenient, making it more likely that pregnant women will commonly be able to know before birth if the child has Down Syndrome. We know that 92% of women who get a definitive diagnosis of Downs while pregnant choose to abort. India Surrogate Pregnancy: A practice is increasing in Indian infertile couples to use in-vitro fertilization to create embryos and then to hire a surrogate mother to carry these embryos to term for the couple. Latin America Bad News: The radical pro-abortion organization, Center for Reproductive Rights, has announced that it will expand its legal work in Latin America by establishing new offices in Bogota, Columbia and Nairobi, Kenya. These offices will concentrate on expanding abortion access in Latin America under the broad term reproductive health. God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Focus on Asia): "I Stand With Komen - (27 January 2012) - I'm sure by now you have all heard the great news that the Susana G. Komen Foundation has decided to end its funding of Planned Parenthood. We really need your help now. Pro-abortion activists are flooding Komen with calls, decrying their decision and threatening to withhold future support unless Komen re-establishes funding of PP. Let Komen know you support their decision to defund PP by signing this petition! Also, here's an excellent video that exposes just how much help PP gives women who need mammograms.

ITEM #1: Analysis: Ageing, indebted Japan holds lessons for others
An asset price bubble pops, hitting bank balance sheets and tax revenues. As growth weakens and the economy flirts with deflation, the real burden of servicing debt increases.
****************************************
ITEM #2: The Global War Against Baby Girls
Over the past three decades the world has come to witness an ominous and entirely new form of gender discrimination: sex-selective feticide, implemented through the practice of surgical abortion with the assistance of information gained through prenatal gender determination technology. All around the world, the victims of this new practice are overwhelmingly female — in fact, almost universally female.

ITEM #3: 7 Things You Can Do to Fight the Contraception Mandate
The right to follow one's conscience is an essential freedom enjoyed by countless Americans since the dawn of this great nation. The founders placed such importance on the right to free exercise of religion that they placed it as the first right listed in the U.S. Constitution's "Bill of Rights." "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

ITEM #4: Prison dilemma: surging numbers of older inmates
The latest available figures from 2010 show that 8 percent of the prison population — 124,400 inmates — was 55 or older, compared to 3 percent in 1995, according to a report being released Friday by Human Rights Watch. This oldest segment grew at six times the rate of the overall prison population between 1995 and 2010, the report says.

ITEM #5: Japan estimates population to shrink by one-third by 2060, seniors to account to 40 percent
In year 2060, Japan will have 87 million people. The number of people 65 or older will nearly double to 40 percent, while the national work force of people between ages 15 and 65 will shrink to about half of the total population, according to the estimate, made by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.

ITEM #6: Smartphones exposing children to pornography and violence as one-in-five admit to viewing inappropriate material
Parents are being warned to monitor their children's use of smartphones as new research suggests vast numbers of youngsters have used them to access illicit pictures and videos. * 2.8 million children have a smartphone – including almost a million 8-12 year olds (25 per cent)
* 87 per cent of children do not have parental security restrictions on their mobile phones
* Almost forty percent of children use the phones to access videos and social networking sites

ITEM #7 Steven M. Wise on Legal Rights for Animals
[Note: Miles' position follows that of bioethicist Peter Singer. Singer is known as the Father of the animal rights movement; in the late 1980's he proposed his "Declaration of the Personhood of the Apes" to the United Nations; his book Global Ethics is published by the United Nations. In this article, Wise's suggested tactic to achieve non-human animal "personhood" in the United States is interesting. This is why those crafting "personhood" definitions used in the current "human personhood" initiatives/bills/amendments -- including and especially any Federal Personhood Amendments -- need to be aware that personhood rights for non-human animals could slip into our laws and constitutions unsuspectedly. -- Dianne N. Irving, Ph.D.]

ITEM #8: Why My Big Family Is Not Overpopulating The Earth
Now that our fifth baby is seven months old, my husband and I are often asked: "...are you done now?" Aren't you worried about overpopulation?
****************************************
ITEM #9: I Shouldn't Have Waited For The Bishops
Are you like me? Reading the coverage of the HHS mandate for insurance to cover contraception and sterilization and wondering why the bishops are only now speaking out against it when citizens have been forced to pay taxes that fund contraception, sterilization and even abortion for a long time.

ITEM #10: Be Not Afraid: hope for parents whose babies will likely die
What do you do after finding out that your unborn baby has a defect that is ‘incompatible with life'? Many parents are presented with a dreadful choice: either get an abortion, or carry to term a diseased fetus, who will face untold medical complications and who will likely die anyway. With the dilemma put like this, as many as 80-90% of parents with an unborn baby with a serious medical condition opt for abortion. However, a growing number are uncomfortable with this option. The question is, where do such parents turn for support to help bring their baby into the world?

ITEM #11: Analysis: WHO Staff Report Calls for Legal Abortion in Developing World, Abortion Figures Inflated
A widely publicized report in The Lancet medical journal calling for the legalization of abortion contained inflated numbers, flawed data collection and highly misleading language.

ITEM #12: Pre-IVF egg-screening test criticised by pro-life lobby
SPUC has criticised a Scottish IVF centre for introducing a technique to screen eggs for genetic abnormalities. The Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine claims that the screening will improve the outcomes of IVF treatment. SPUC Scotland said: "Even if egg-screening helps to increase the number of births following IVF, it will still be the case that the vast majority of embryos created in the laboratory will not be born. IVF demeans human dignity by reducing procreation to quality-controlled, factory-like production. Doctors should instead be pursuing the far more successful ethical alternatives to IVF."
