40 Days For Life: DAY 17: We Target Them, Then Abort Them

Today is World Down Syndrome Day--a day dedicated to increasing support for people with trisomy 21, better known as Down syndrome.

But there are fewer and fewer individuals with Down syndrome to celebrate. In much of the Western world, the abortion rate hovers around 90 percent for babies with Down syndrome.

Iceland infamously boasted of having nearly eradicated Down syndrome...when all it did was exterminate the children who have it.

World Down Syndrome Day highlights the schizophrenic relationship our culture has with children who have special needs.

Outside the womb, we love and cherish them...but inside the womb, we poison and dismember them. The same United Nations that officially recognizes World Down Syndrome Day also champions abortion every chance it gets.

Even as pro-lifers have made unprecedented progress toward ending abortion the last few years, growing support for eugenics looms.

Disability has joined the ranks of rape, incest, and life of the mother on the list of "hard cases" in which even many who consider themselves pro-life accept abortion.

This World Down Syndrome Day, take a stand for children of all ability levels by signing up to pray at your nearest 40 Days for Life vigil:

Minnesota

Last fall, a woman showed up at the abortion facility in Moorhead, Minnesota, at the recommendation of her doctor.

She was told that her baby had "birth defects" and that "it would be cruel to let the baby live."

Fortunately, 40 Days for Life volunteers were there to encourage her and to provide her with alternatives to abortion.

"This precious little boy was recently born, several weeks early, but healthier than expected!" shared 40 Days for Life participants. "One of the potential problems had miraculously disappeared, and the other problem was much milder than expected and probably won't even require surgery!"

The family lives out of town, but Moorhead pro-lifers have sent baby supplies, prayers, and letters of encouragement.

Murrieta, California

The 40 Days for Life team in Murrieta met a 49-year-old woman who came to Planned Parenthood for the morning-after pill.

She and her husband were worried that conceiving at their age would be dangerous...and because pregnancy at an older age increases the likelihood of Down syndrome.

"Her sister has a child with Down syndrome, who is in the hospital and suffering," explained Noelle, the local leader. "So this added to her justification for taking the pill."

Noelle provided the woman with information about how the morning-after pill can actually function as an abortifacient.

"We discussed God's plan and provision for her," Noelle continued. "She expressed her faith to us and knew she shouldn't take the 'Plan B.'"

At the end of the conversation, the woman never entered Planned Parenthood--but instead exchanged contact information with the 40 Days for Life participants.

They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Child, your sins are forgiven."

--Mark 2:3-5

Lord, your love is always the same and somehow always new. Your love is creative. Guide my steps, prompt my conversations, and help me to know how to reach expectant mothers contemplating an abortion. Help me to believe that you can and will work miracles through my faith.

For life,
