“Giving public witness of our faith”

Catholics, others protest approval of same-sex marriage in San Diego

News from the Trenches

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, nearly 70 people attended a noon Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in San Diego, followed by a rosary procession in reparation for the city council's and mayor's endorsement of same-sex marriage the previous week.

Behind a large missionary image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a large banner that read, "We are praying to protect marriage," people of all ages, including several families who brought very young children, joined in the procession from the church to the city administration complex on C Street downtown. There they prayed all of the mysteries of the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and sang hymns for approximately an hour.

MILLER OFFICERS RECEIVE S&M PHOTOS; BOYCOTT TO EXTEND BEYOND SUNDAY’S EVENT

September 28, 2007

Catholic League president Bill Donohue explained the latest developments in the boycott against Miller Brewing:

"Miller Brewing will now be known as S&M Miller, and that is because it has apparently decided to drop anchor with the sadomasochistic festival that it is proudly sponsoring on Sunday at the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco. It still refuses to pull sponsorship of this obscene event, knowing full well that it is making a financial contribution to an anti-Catholic group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence; the Sisters is one of the beneficiaries of the street fair. And last night in San Francisco, the Sisters held a mock Last Supper, ridiculing all Christians.

"Yesterday, we sent all eleven members of the company's Executive Committee a sample of the kinds of sick behaviors (click here) S&M Miller is sponsoring; the packet was sent by overnight mail to the all-male committee. The accompanying memo says:

It is hard to believe that if you knew exactly what kind of event the Folsom Street Fair is that you would want Miller to be sponsoring it. That is why I am sending the enclosed photos of this event (taken from previous years) to you.
In the outside chance you are not disturbed by these photos, please show them to your mother, wife and daughters.
I trust that you will do the right thing and withdraw sponsorship of this event immediately. Rest assured that we will not walk away from this issue. The public is rallying to our side, emboldening us to stay in this fight for as long as it takes.

"Over 200 religious organizations spanning six faith communities were sent a letter yesterday asking them to join us in the boycott. If S&M Miller doesn't pull its sponsorship, we will announce a game plan on Monday that will make the company regret it ever decided to insult Christians."

Speaker Pelosi Determines "Christianity Has Not Been Harmed" by S&M Last Supper Mockery

By John-Henry Westen

SAN FRANCISCO, September 28, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Following the discovery of an ad for a sadomasochistic street parade in San Francisco which mocked the Last Supper replacing Christ and His Apostles with leather-clad (and unclad) homosexuals, Concerned Women for America (CWA) and other groups called on California legislators to denounce the anti-Christianity. Rather than denounce the ad, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has derisively dismissed any concerns.

Drew Hammill, Pelosi's press secretary, responded to media questions on the offensive ad saying, "As a Catholic, the speaker is confident that Christianity has not been harmed."

The offensive ad was put together by organizers of San Francisco's partially taxpayer funded and Hedonistic Folsom Street Fair - sponsored by Miller Brewing, Co. - which will take place this Sunday. Over 400,000 people are expected to attend.

"As if the add itself isn't offensive enough," said, Matt Barber, CWA's Policy Director for Cultural Issues, "we have photographic evidence that the San Francisco government suspends indecency and child abuse laws for a day allowing fair goers to parade the streets of San Francisco, fully nude, engaging in illegal public sex while tax-payer funded police stand-by and do nothing."

"Children are allowed to - and do - attend this event and are exposed to this activity which is illegal child abuse," added Barber. "We're a nation of laws, and we're calling on Mayor Gavin Newsom to enforce the law and for San Francisco police to arrest lawbreakers on Sunday."

Pelosi, who is a major supporter of the "gay" lifestyle, will be receiving an award from the radical homosexual group, "Human Rights Campaign" on October 6th.

"In Cordibus Jesu et Mariae"

TWO ARTICLES FROM VATICAN CITY:

VATICAN - WORDS OF DOCTRINE: Defending the most helpless. Always.
Rev Nicola Bux and Rev Salvatore Vitiello

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On Monday 24 September 2007 an Italian Court issued a sentence allowing "pre-implant diagnosis" prohibited by Law 40/2004 on assisted procreation. The Court side stepped the law on the grounds of the existence of a constitutionally oriented interpretation of Law 40, and authorized the Hospital involved to carry out the diagnosis. The prompt response of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Italy, entrusted to Conference secretary Bishop Giuseppe Betori, was that the sentence appears clearly contrary both to Law 40 and to the Constitutional Court's own interpretation".
A few weeks ago world wide media attention was given to the news of a mistake made during a "therapeutic" abortion, on a mother pregnant with twins, who found afterwards that instead of her "unhealthy" child, (in this specific case affected by the Down syndrome), they killed her healthy one, with the successive consequent request to proceed to kill the second foetus. And for that mistake, we can be sure, considerable compensation will be demanded.

But who will compensate those killed? Worrying to say the least is a society which no longer feels the deep concern that this sought of news can and must cause in the minds of individuals and even more in the collective mind. How can a man who no longer respects the sacredness of live continue to respect himself and others?
Definitively "poor" is the person who denies God, plays God, obviously failing, and producing all around him monstrosities of violence and evil which only apparently and for a short time, remain hidden under a false veil of science, progress and humanity's "good". It is never right to do wrong to obtain something good, and certainly not when at stake is the supreme and intangible value of human life.

We should not be afraid to call these "experiences" by name: experiments in eugenics! Selection of human beings because of their state of health and who knows what other criteria will be used as they go ahead. It is astonishing that all those defenders of equality, human rights, respect and peace, do not rise up against these events indignantly. Probably the economic interests at stake compel to keep deafening silence even those most attentive and sensitive to human rights.

Abortion is not a right, because there cannot exist a right to kill and to kill the weakest and most helpless of all human beings, simply because he or she is so defenseless. The Church defends without hesitation, those who are most helpless. Always. In this case the most helpless are embryos selected because of the state of health and foetuses which are killed because they are not in good health. This is a matter of truth, conscience and God's judgment. The Lord of mercy is also the God of justice, who will ask each one of us to render account for our deeds.
What is at stake is also the future of humanity. A future where it is ever more dangerous to conceive powers which can decide what other people must be like, if and how long they should live and , above all, by what "criteria" this must be determined. What once appeared to be a subject of literary imagination, is becoming dramatically true. For the good of man, of humanity and the most helpless of human beings, this cannot be ignored. EUROPE - Family Policy Institute warns of demographic winter in Europe caused by abortion, fewer marriages and more divorces: new 2007 Report on the Evolution of the Family in Europe

Barcelona (Agenzia Fides) - Yesterday, 26 September, in Barcelona, Spain Lola Velarde, President of the European network of Family Policy Institutes (IPF), presented the 2007 Report on the Evolution of the Family in Europe. One year ago IPF presented its first such report to the European Parliament. Since then two more countries have joined the EU and some indicators such as family policy, changed. This is why this new updated report prepared by a multidisciplinary team of experts, highlights and analysis the more important family related indicators, starting with information supplied by various international bodies.

The report warns about Europe's "demographic winter", its marginal growth in the last twenty years, unequally distributed, with a clear drop in population in eastern European countries. In the Europe of 15 countries, population growth is due mainly to immigration with a rate of 80 per cent. The continent is expected to begin to fall in population numbers in 2025, and society is older, with more people over 65 than under 14.

One cause of a drop in the birth rate in Europe is the tragedy of abortion: every year 1.2 million unborn babies are not allowed to live: one abortion in every five pregnancies. Also to be considered the drop in the number of marriages, 22 per cent in 20 years, and people marry ever later, at an average age of 29. Another additional cause is the increase in divorces, one every 30 seconds, and almost 2 million babies born out of wedlock every year.
Lola Velarde said " in recent years problems facing families in Europe have become worse " and "Europe is losing the battle for the family", and she presented some answers offered by European institutions, IPF especially. Thanks to Germany EU presidency and with the help of the EU Ministry for the Family, awareness has grown especially in the Economic and Social Council (CEYS) which encourages the centrality of the family dimension in social and economic policies. However the European Commission has neither an office for family policies nor an Observatory nor a White Paper on the Family. Awareness is also unevenly distributed in some countries, some have a Family Ministry but in others family policies only come third. IPF, proposes indispensable social, economic, cultural measures to plant in Europe an authentic "family perspective". (RG) (Agenzia Fides 27/9/2007; righe 35, parole 494)

Thomas More Law Center Calls For National Debate on Pro-Life Strategy

ANN ARBOR, MI —The Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is urging pro-life supporters to engage in a national debate regarding the direction of the pro-life movement. The Law Center’s active support to end abortion, including the actual drafting of state constitutional amendments that provide legal protection to the unborn, has been criticized by some national pro-life leaders. These leaders shun efforts to attack the central holding of Roe v. Wade in favor of an “incremental” approach that seeks to enact legislation that might reduce the number of abortions, without eliminating abortion all together.

Robert Muise, the Law Center attorney who prepared a Memorandum challenging the national pro-life movement’s lethargy head on, bluntly stated, “After 34 years of abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy, it is time to rethink pro-life strategy.” Muise stated further, “While seeking to decrease the number of abortions performed in this country is a laudable endeavor and should continue, we must never forget that ending all abortions is the ultimate goal.” Muise added, “It would be a tragic mistake to be content with a strategy that makes ending abortion secondary to other regulatory efforts, or worse yet, a strategy that avoids it altogether.”

The Thomas More Law Center has been working with pro-life leaders in Georgia (Georgia Right To Life) to get a state constitutional amendment passed that would provide legal protection to all human beings from the moment of fertilization. The proposed amendment would achieve two fundamental purposes that are essential to the pro-life movement. First, it would establish and affirm, without question, that Georgia is a “pro-life” state that protects all human life from the moment of fertilization as a matter of constitutional law. And second, it provides a direct challenge to the central holding of Roe v. Wade. As the Supreme Court itself acknowledged in the Roe decision, if the personhood of the fetus could be established, the abortion right “collapses.”

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel for the Law Center, commented, “After 34 years and over 45 million babies killed in the womb, some national pro-life leaders still say ‘the time is not right.’ Martin Luther King Jr. had to contend with the same kind of argument opposing his direct action in the civil rights movement. His response from the Birmingham Jail is one that pro-lifers should take to heart: ‘Wait’ has always meant ‘Never.’ Moreover, as the famous hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, once said, ‘You miss 100 % of the shots you don’t take.’ His advice is relevant to the debate over strategy we are now engaged in—we must have national pro-life leaders who are willing to take the shots on behalf of the unborn.”

The national debate on pro-life strategy is being featured online on the Human Life Amendment website at http://personhood.net/legalconsiderations.html.

Our attorneys are assisting state legislators and citizens in Oregon, Montana, Colorado, as well as, Georgia in crafting state constitutional "personhood" amendments. USCCB Pro-Life Committee Issues Statement for Respect Life Sunday, October 7, 2007

LifeSiteNews.com
Tuesday September 25, 2007

By Meg Jalsevac

PHILADELPHIA, PA, September 25, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - As is the custom in the United States, the first Sunday of October will be honored by US Catholics as Respect Life Sunday.  In honor of this, Cardinal Justin Rigali, the Chairman of the Committee for Pro-Life Activities of the United States' Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has issued a statement to be made available at all parishes nationwide.

The statement calls for US Catholics to "again pray for - and renew their resolve to bring about - a culture of life and an end to the killing of innocent human beings, especially those who are vulnerable due to their age, size, health or dependency."

The theme of this year's Respect Life Sunday is 'The Infant in My Womb Leaped for Joy' and is taken from the Gospel of St. Luke (1:39-56)  when the Blessed Mother, bearing Christ in her womb, is welcomed by St. Elizabeth, who was bearing St. John the Baptist.

Cardinal Rigali's statement explained the theme and purpose of this year's Respect Life Sunday. "There was no confusion as to what and who were nestled under their mothers' hearts. Yet 2,000 years later, many well-educated people do not know - or claim they do not know - the truth about human life before birth."

Rigali referred to the passage of the partial birth abortion ban and President Bush's veto of an embryonic stem-cell bill as positive happenings for the cause of life but warned that these victories are only partial as babies may still be legally killed in the womb and there are those who are still rallying to have the right to destroy human embryos in the name of research.  He warned, "We will not see the day when all human life is respected and defended unless we address a deeper problem."

"Some ethicists suggest that patients who apparently lack conscious awareness - although otherwise healthy and not imminently dying - can be dehydrated and starved to death because their lives are not fully human but "vegetative." This ignores the insight expressed in 2004 by Pope John Paul II and recently reaffirmed by the Holy See under Pope Benedict XVI, that "the intrinsic value and personal dignity of every human being do not change, no matter what the concrete circumstances of his or her life. A man, even if seriously ill or disabled in the exercise of his highest functions, is and always will be a man, and he will never become a 'vegetable' or an 'animal'." We need truth (emphasis in original)."

The pro-life statement concluded by asking people of all faiths to stand up for life.  "This is no sectarian creed. The 'recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world' (Preamble, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989). And that is the truth."

The American Catholic bishops first initiated Respect Life Sunday on the first Sunday of October in 1972.  The entire month of October is nationally recognized by US Catholics as Respect Life Month and many dioceses and parishes encourage a vast range of devotions and pro-life activities to promote the Culture of Life.

The USCCB prepares and distributes an annual packet that is made available to individuals and parishes across the country made up of assorted pamphlets on various life issues.
Many parishes participate in an annual Life Chain which has been known to attract hundreds of thousands of pro-life participants across the world who peacefully pray and stand in witness to the sanctity of human life from the very moment of conception.

Wichita Joins Nationwide 40 Days For Life Campaign At Tiller Clinic

September 25th, 2007

Wichita, KS - Beginning tomorrow, Operation Rescue and the Kansas Coalition For Life will begin participation in a nationwide pro-life prayer campaign called 40 Days For Life outside the nation's largest late term abortion clinic.

For the next 40 days, from September 26 through November 4, pro-life supporters will be urged to maintain a constant prayer presence during every business hour at Women's Health Care Services, the late-term abortion mill owned and operated by George R. Tiller, who is currently facing 19 criminal counts of illegal abortions, a county grand jury investigation that could net additional charges, and a disciplinary review by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.

"We believe strongly in the power of prayer," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "In Aurora, Illinois, on the last day of their 40 Days For Life Vigil, a judge ruled that the Planned Parenthood office in that community must remain closed. It was an amazing answer to prayer."

"We will pray for the next 40 days that Tiller's clinic will also close and that he will be brought to justice on the crimes of which he has been charged. We look forward to seeing what God will do in Wichita in response to our continued prayers," said Newman.

The Wichita 40 Days For Life vigil is part of a national campaign that is being conducted simultaneously in over 90 cities across the country.

Another Sad Commentary on These Dreadful Times We Live In!

No charges for dead babies

"The case hasn't received much publicity outside the area. No wonder. I don't think most journalists know what to make of such a case. After all, there weren't supposed to be people like Freeman anymore – not after abortion was made "safe and legal." Contraception was supposed to free women of unwanted pregnancies, and taxpayer-subsidized abortions were supposed to ensure that messiness like this would never be necessary."

Sofia hosts 'Voices of the Abandoned' International Conference on abandoned children in Europe

Sofia (Agenzia Fides) - "Voices of the Abandoned", is the title of an International Conference which will take place on 26 September at the Culture House in Sofia (Bulgaria). Promoted by the Amici dei Bambini, the conference is an opportunity for institutions and experts to discuss the situation of abandoned children in Europe. The results of studies carried out in Italy, France, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia will be presented for the first time. These countries participated in a programme co-financed by the European Union "Social inclusion for out of family children and young people in public childcare".

As part of the programme AiBi opened an ad hoc web site - www.childout.org - where the results of research and official documents can be accessed. The research is the fruit of two years of activity with the collaboration of members of public and private institutions and the academic world. There will be a presentation of the good points of certain "childhood systems", applicable also in different social contexts from those examined; as well as the weak points which need to be strengthened by the governments to improve policies to safeguard minors in the respective countries. The meeting will also illustrate the degree of cultural transformation of services for minors in the new EU member countries and the existing difficulties in other national contexts. There will also be time for reflection with representatives of institutions and experts on childhood and international organisations. Public Relations/Office Amici dei Bambini: Francesca Mineo. Priest Blasts 'Usual Suspects' For Votes Against Pro-Life Policy

FRONT ROYAL, VA, September 24, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, STL, president of Human Life International, (HLI) today blasted a gang of 16 Catholic senators for their votes on an amendment to HR 2764 to overturn the Mexico City Policy instituted by President Reagan to prevent U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding overseas abortions.

"For the most part it's the usual suspects who claim to be Catholic while their consistent pro-abortion votes amount to a betrayal of the Catholic faith. We expect treachery from them," Fr. Euteneuer said. "But the great disappointment here is Robert Casey, Jr., whose late father courageously stood against the tide for life in his political party. It is disgusting to think that Casey Junior ran as a 'pro-life' candidate. He has betrayed those who voted for him on those grounds."

"At a time when these same politicians bewail America's standing in the world they vote to export death to nations that don't want it, in violation of those nations' religious traditions. They are the new 'ugly Americans' practicing imperialism at its worst," Father Euteneuer said.

The gang of 16 includes: Robert Casey, Jr. (D-PA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Ted Kennedy (D-MA), John Kerry (D-MA), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Susan Collins (R-ME), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Ken Salazar (D-CO), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Christopher Dodd (CT-D), Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

Biography Reveals Hillary Clinton SĂ©ance, Religious Devotion to Abortion

Early photo of the Clintons

Participated in strange moments of imaginary conversation with deceased Eleanor Roosevelt from solarium atop White House

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, September 24, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new biography on Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton reveals that during her time as First Lady, Clinton participated in strange moments of imaginary conversation with a deceased Eleanor Roosevelt from the solarium atop the White House. Grove City College professor Paul Kengor's "God and Hillary Clinton" also notes the religious devotion with which Senator Clinton advocates abortion.

An overview of the book by Kengor's Grove City colleague Dr. Warren Thockmorton notes that the book - with information from friends, colleagues and acquaintances - paints an accurate picture of Clinton's version of faith.

The woman who arranged the séance-type sessions atop the White House, Jean Houston, became very close to the Senator. Houston who was known for delving into altered consciousness, the spirit world, and psychic experiences, according to a source quoted in the book, compared Clinton to Joan of Arc and believed her to be the most pivotal woman in all of human history.

Thockmorton also extracts from the book an analysis of Clinton's devotion to abortion. "There is no issue closer to Mrs. Clinton's heart than abortion rights—to which she holds a nearly religious devotion—so much so that it has become a kind of political theology to the senator, equipped with its own set of apologetics."

"On the abortion issue, writes Thockmorton, "Kengor has provided unprecedented information on Mrs. Clinton and the root causes of her position. Interviewed several times for this book is Mrs. Clinton's close friend and one-time OB-GYN, William F. Harrison, the nationally known Fayetteville, Arkansas abortion doctor. Harrison was very candid, and provided telling insights into Hillary's sudden deep devotion to the cause of abortion rights by the time of Roe v. Wade, a marked moment on her political-religious path from Park Ridge Methodist to the White House."

The new information revealed in the book corresponds with findings last year that it was Hillary Clinton who spearheaded the pro-abortion efforts under her husband's term in Office. Five Commandments

National Director, Priests for Life

Spanish Version
Fr. Frank's Columns are Podcast

Much of the success of our pro-life efforts depends on our own humility. As we lead or participate in pro-life groups, whether on the local or national level, five commandments can significantly enhance our efforts.

1. Keep an open mind about what the best strategies and tactics are. Is this the right time for a state, for example, to introduce laws to ban abortion entirely, even if those laws might be struck down by a court? This is a matter of strategic disagreement, not dogma. Good pro-life people will come down on different sides of the question. Those who are convinced that they should work for such laws should do so with courage and grace; those who are not convinced should not criticize others.

Should pro-life people display graphic images of aborted babies in public? Again, people will disagree. But as long as the First Amendment is in place and there isn't a command in Scripture to avoid this tactic, those who don't think it's a good idea should not go on a dogmatic crusade to stop it.

Never confuse authority with expertise. Just because a bishop, for example, has authority in the Church, doesn't mean he knows the best pro-life strategies, and just because a lawyer is hired by a bishop, doesn't mean that the legal advice becomes dogma when the bishop signs off on it.

2. Rejoice when others who are not in your group do similar work. In Mark 9:38-40 we read, "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us." "Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us."

The problem here was that this unnamed man didn't work in the same office as John and the other apostles. He belonged to a different organization. The apostles fell into the "turf wars" trap. They forgot that God is sovereign, that the Spirit moves where he wills, and that you cannot imprison the Word of the Lord. We are called to do God's work, not to control God's work. (For a similar story, see Numbers 11:24-29).

3. Remember that you don't own your donors, God does. People who donate to pro-life work do so freely, and usually donate to more than one organization. They do so because they see that work is being done and is having an impact. If you want a donor to stick with you, be sure to keep increasing the impact of your work. Remember, the money that's out there is not a pie, which only has so many pieces, but a river that keeps on flowing!

4. Ask not what other groups can do for you; ask what you can do for other groups.

5. Remember how much we can accomplish together if we don't care who gets the credit.

President George Bush Proclaims September 24 Family Day 2007

WASHINGTON, DC, September 20, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The following text is a proclamation by President Bush:

Families are the cornerstone of our Nation. On Family Day, we underscore our dedication to strengthening America's families and recognize the importance that the bonds between parents and children hold for the future of our country.

Parents and family members are the first and most important influence in a child's life. Families offer a stable and nurturing environment by providing love, guidance, support, and comfort. They help young people gain the skills they need to succeed in life and the courage and drive to realize their dreams. By caring for and spending time with their children, parents instill lifelong values and help build a better America.

My Administration is committed to supporting American families. We are working with faith-based and community organizations to promote healthy marriages, responsible fatherhood, and positive youth development. When children are connected to family, community, school, and places of worship, they are more likely to make good choices and reach their full potential.

Families help prepare children for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century by encouraging them and insisting on high standards. Strong, loving families help young Americans grow into successful adults and build a Nation shining with optimism.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 24, 2007, as Family Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day by engaging in activities that strengthen the bonds between parents and children.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty- second.

GEORGE W. BUSH
