Abortion is Not Health Care June 19, 2009Dear John,With Congress set to consider health care reform in the weeks ahead, we must ensure that our Senators and Representatives know that any health care program that includes taxpayer-funded abortion is unacceptable. Please write your Senators and Representatives today and tell them to respect your conscience and explicitly prohibit taxpayer-funded abortion as a part of health care reform!Pro-Life Americans must demand that any health care reform bill include an explicit prohibition against taxpayer-funded abortions. It is not enough for a potential bill to remain silent on this issue. If the bill says nothing about abortion coverage, the door is left open for pro-abortion government bureaucrats to define abortion as part of “reproductive care”, just as Hillary Clinton has said. We cannot allow pro-abortion legislators to leave this door open.It’s a proven fact that taxpayer-funding of abortions in any health care reform bill would only lead to more abortions. The Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, recognizes that more women have abortions when they are paid for by the government.President Obama has clearly stated that he supports taxpayer-funded abortions as part of his health care reform. In his speech to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in July of 2008, President Obama stated that in his mind "reproductive care is essential care, basic care, so it is at the center, the heart of the [health care] plan that I propose." When asked for clarification later, an Obama spokesman said that “reproductive care included abortion."Please ask your Senators and Representatives to explicitly ban taxpayer-funding of abortion as part of health care reform.
