House Committee Defeats Amendment to Stop Obama's Tax-Funded Abortions in DC
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A House committee on Tuesday night defeated a pro-life amendment designed to stop President Barack Obama's plan to fund abortions in the nation's capital with taxpayer dollars. The House Appropriations Committee voted largely along partisan lines to prevent restoration of the funding ban. When he released his budget request to Congress, Obama called for repealing the Dornan Amendment, which has blocked taxpayer funding of abortions in the District of Columbia for decades. A House subcommittee pushed forward Obama's pro-abortion agenda and a bipartisan pair of pro-life lawmakers offered an amendment in the full committee last night to restore the tax-funding ban. With Democrats largely voting no and Republicans supporting the amendment, the panel defeated the move by Reps. Todd Tiahrt, a Kansas Republican, and Lincoln Davis, a Tennessee Democrat, 33-26. Five Democrats (Reps. Barry of Arkansas, Davis, Kaptur of Ohio, Mollohan of West Virginia, and Murtha of Pennsylvania) joined 21 Republicans on the panel in voting to restore the Dornan Amendment. However, 32 Decorates on the committee, along with pro-abortion Republican Rep. Frelinghuysen of New Jersey, voted to keep Obama's pro-abortion agenda in place. Full story at LifeNews.com

Senate Begins Hearing on Pro-Abortion Supreme Court Pick Sotomayor Monday
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin hearings on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor on Monday. Though Republican lawmakers are grumbling about the accelerated hearing process and not having enough time to review last-minute documents, they are allowing the hearing to move ahead. Sotomayor is a federal appeals court judge President Barack Obama selected to replace retiring pro-abortion Justice David Souter, one of the five members who make up the court's pro-abortion majority. Leading pro-life groups are opposing Sotomayor because it appears she will join that pro-abortion bloc that supports Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that allowed virtually unlimited abortions nationwide. Recent documents show her involvement in the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund, a group that has submitted numerous Supreme Court briefs arguing for an unrestricted right to abortion and claiming any pro-life limits are racist. Sotomayor served as a board member of the organization and has been described as actively involved in setting policy. The documents also show the group, now known as Latino Justice, took a strong stance against pro-life Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork. The Senate went on to reject President Ronald Reagan's high court pick in 1987 after abortion advocates subjected him to intense criticism. Though they would like more time to review the papers they received last week, pro-life Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, says he and his colleagues will not stop the hearings from proceeding. Full story at LifeNews.com

White House Says Obama, Pope Benedict XVI Will Have "Frank" Talk on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The White House is saying that pro-abortion President Barack Obama and Pope Benedict XVI, the head of the Catholic Church, will have a "frank' talk on abortion when they meet on Friday. Obama is currently in Italy for the Group of Eight summit and the two will meet after the conference concludes. "I think there will be a frank discussion [about abortion]," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One, according to an AP report. On subject like abortion where Obama is out of step with the pro-life teachings of the Catholic faith, Gibbs said "even if we don't see eye to eye on everything, there are steps that can be taken on a number of issues that will show progress, whether it's on something like unintended pregnancy or adoption." Gibbs said the pontiff is "somebody that gets to see a lot of the world, and I think getting his continued support for these efforts is obviously important." The relationship between Obama and Catholics has been tenuous. The pro-life teachings of the Catholic Church and Obama's pro-abortion views have been at odds since the beginning of his presidency. Full story at LifeNews.com

Romney, Palin, Huckabee Lead Republicans in Poll to Challenge Obama in 2012
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- When it comes to which Republican candidate should take on pro-abortion President Barack Obama in 2012, GOP voters are essentially evenly split between three former candidates. Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, and Mike Huckabee are within just a few percentage points of one another. In a new Rasmussen poll released today, the former Massachusetts governor tops all Republican candidates with the backing of 25 percent of GOP voters. Palin, who recently announced she would resign her position as Alaska's governor, follows Romney in second place with the backing of 24 percent. Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, received the support of 22 percent of Republicans. Each of the three campaigned on strong pro-life platform during their presidential or vice-presidential bids and would operate as president in stark contrast to Obama, who has compiled a lengthy pro-abortion record. After the top three, pro-life former House Speaker Newt Gingrich received the support of 14 percent of Republicans, pro-life Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and pro-life Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty each received the support of one percent, and six percent prefer some other candidate not named in the Rasmussen poll. Full story at LifeNews.com

Scientists Create Human Sperm From Embryonic Stem Cells, Destroy Human Life
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- British scientists have used embryonic stem cells to create human sperm and made a breakthrough that they say will could revolutionize fertility treatment. However, their discovery couldn't have been accomplished without the destruction of a unique human being and is drawing heat because of it. Researchers at the Northeast England Stem Cell Institute say they used stem cells they obtained by killing a human embryo to create sperm. With a few minor alterations, they say the sperm could be used to fertilize a human egg and create a new human being. Within 10 years, they say they may have the ability to allow infertile couples to have a baby who is genetically their own. They also say that they could create sperm using female stem cells and ultimately create an unborn child using only genetic material from the mother without a man's involvement. Full story at LifeNews.com

Vote to Affirm Obama's Plan to Fund Abortions in DC Gets Trashed, Supported
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The congressman who sponsored an amendment to stop President Barack Obama's plan to fund abortions in Washington, D.C. with taxpayer dollars is disappointed by the outcome. Rep. Todd Tiahrt's reaction stands in contrast to the delighted outlook coming from NARAL. As LifeNews.com report, most of the Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee aligned themselves with Obama to force Americans to fund abortions in the nation's capital. Tiahrt blasted their votes in comments his office sent to LifeNews.com and said it would mean more abortions -- a violation of President Obama's promise to reduce them. "When given the opportunity this week, Democrat appropriators voted to allow the District of Columbia to use public funding for abortions without limitations. The door is now open for American taxpayers to pay for abortions, even into the ninth month of pregnancy," he said. "This was the wrong decision and one that is contrary to the will of the American people." Full story at LifeNews.com

PETA: Upset President Obama Would Hurt a Fly, But Abortion Another Story
by Thomas Glessner, JD
On June 16 during an interview on CNBC President Obama swatted at and killed a fly. The matter was treated with good humor by most. I, for one, wanted to say “Nice shot Mr. President.” However, the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) felt differently and publicly chastised the President for his apparent cruelty to the insect.
“We support compassion for the even the smallest animals," says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt." Friedrich says PETA supports "brushing flies away rather than killing them". Later PETA sent to Obama a fly catching device that traps flies and then allows for their safe release back into nature. Upon hearing of the compassion PETA has for the smallest of creatures I wondered what position they took on abortion. After all, if this organization believes in the protection of the lives of flies surely they would be adamantly opposed to the killing of the unborn. Hence, I immediately did a search on the Internet to find an answer to my question. I found out that PETA’s compassion for unborn human babies falls far short of its compassion for flies. Full story at LifeNews.com

Canadian Parliament Will Debate Bill to Legalize Assisted Suicide in September
Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- The Canadian Parliament is scheduled to begin debating a bill that would legalize assisted suicide in September. Leading pro-life, medical and disability rights groups are working now to prepare the educational and lobbying process needed to stop the legislation. Bloc MP Francine Lalonde introduced Bill C-384 in May that would permit assisted suicide for anyone 18 or older who is experiencing “severe physical or mental pain” and has “tried or expressly refused” treatment.
Alex Schadenberg, the head of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, tells LifeNews.com, "The first hour of debate on Bill C-384 is tentatively scheduled for later September 2009." "The debate on euthanasia and assisted suicide will heat up in Canada during the fall session of parliament in the same way as it has heated up in the UK during their current parliamentary debate," Schadenberg added. Full story at LifeNews.com

Washington State Pharmacists Forced to Dispense Plan B Drug Thanks to Court
Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- Pharmacists in Washington state may soon be forced to dispense the morning after pill thanks to a ruling out today by a federal appeals court. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court ruling that had temporarily put on hold a requirement for pharmacists to dispense all legal drugs. Under pressure from pro-abortion Gov. Chris Gregoire, the pharmacy board approved rules in 2007 making pharmacists dispense all drugs, including those that would violate their moral or religious views. Those drugs could include the morning after pill, also known as Plan B, which can sometimes cause an abortion. They could also include the lethal cocktails physicians order for patients to kill themselves under the state's new law authorizing assisted suicide. The lawsuit was filed by a small grocery and pharmacy in Olympia owned by the Stormans family, as well as two individual pharmacists. Full story at LifeNews.com

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal Signs Pro-Life Bill With Abortion Conscience Clause
Baton Rouge, LA (LifeNews.com) -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a bill Tuesday that gives pro-life doctors and other medical professionals more conscience protections on abortion under state law. The covers both public and private health care workers and allows them to opt out of involvement in abortions. The measure also allows withdrawal from participating in anti-life bioethics practices such as human cloning, euthanasia or embryonic stem cell research. The bill allows the medical workers to receive job protection and legal immunity from employer discrimination if they refused to participate in the practices. Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union opposed the conscience protection for doctors and health care workers claiming that it would somehow reduce access the medical services, even though that has not been the case in other states.

South Carolina Man Ordered Away From Girl He Assaulted at Abortion Center
Charleston, SC (LifeNews.com) -- A South Carolina man has been ordered by a court to stay away from a pro-life girl he assaulted outside an abortion center. Larry Carter Center has been ordered to 15-feet from -year-old Katherine Williams for six months and to avoid further arrests after he assaulted her back in May. According to the Charleston Police Department’s criminal incident report, Ted Williams of Charleston and his daughter Katherine were participating in a pro-life demonstration on May 2 at the Charleston Women’s Center abortion business. The police reports say Mr. Center "came up to the orange fence that borders the property and kicked the sign Ms. Williams was standing behind." "The sign struck Ms. Williams in the foot and the shin," the report added and Williams prosecuted Center for assault. On June 26 Municipal Court Judge N. Steven Steinert signed a consent order which deferred the prosecution of Center for six months on the condition that he stay 15 feet away from Katherine Williams and have “no new arrests within the deferral period.” Full story at LifeNews.com
