Group tells U.S. Senate 1,100 ‘clergy and religious professionals’ support federal abortion funding

Who are they trying to kid?



With great fanfare, a group calling itself 'the Religious Institute' issued a news release last week under the caption "1,100 Clergy Affirm Access to Abortion." The release, disseminated by Religion News Service, called on the U.S. Senate not to impose any restrictions on abortion in pending healthcare reform legislation, claiming abortion is "a morally justifiable decision." 

California Catholic Daily decided to take a closer look at the 'clergy and religious professionals' who signed the letter, and found what can best be described as 'the usual suspects.' 

For example, one of the signers was Frances Kissling, founder and former president of Catholics for Choice (formerly known as Catholics for a Free Choice). Kissling has been a longtime thorn in the side of U.S. bishops, who minced no words in denouncing her group. In 2000, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement saying Kissling's group "is not a Catholic organization, does not speak for the Catholic Church, and in fact promotes positions contrary to the teaching of the Church." Catholics for a Free Choice, said the bishops, is "an arm of the abortion lobby in the United States and throughout the world."
