House Democrats Give Senate Nuclear Option on Pro-Abortion Health Care Bills
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- House Democrats appear to have given the Senate the go-ahead to use a controversial process called reconciliation to railroad the pro-abortion health care bill through the chamber. Abortion advocates may use a process called reconciliation to get around a potential filibuster. With the health care bills in Congress having the potential to increase the number of abortions by one-third, making sure they are amended to prevent abortion funding is crucial. If the amendments fail, stopping the bills with a filibuster is a second option, but Senate Democrats may take that away. Reconciliation makes it so the minority does not have the filibuster as a tool to make it so 60 voters are needed to end debate and allow a vote on a bill. The procedural tool is supposed to be used in emergency purpose for budget bills and other important financial matters. However, pro-life writer Connie Hair at Human Events notes that the House has set up the possibility for it to be used in the Senate. She points to a hearing pro-abortion Rep. Charlie Rangel held in the Ways and Means Committee that apparently certified the House version of the pro-abortion health care bill, HR 3200, as meeting the requirements to become part of the "budget reconciliation process."

Poll Shows Mike Huckabee Clearly Leading 2012 Republican Presidential Field
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new Rasmussen poll released today is a departure from previous polls showing a close three-way race for the Republican nomination to challenge pro-abortion President Barack Obama in 2012. The survey shows pro-life former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with a clear lead. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds 29% of Republican voters nationwide say Huckabee is their pick to represent the GOP in the 2012 presidential campaign. The survey finds 24 percent prefer former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who ran as a pro-life candidate in the 2008 GOP primaries while 18% would cast their vote for pro-life former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Looking at other potential candidates, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is pro-life, gets 14% of the vote while pro-life Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty gets 4%. Six percent of Republican voters prefer some other candidate while 7% remain undecided. Full story at LifeNews.com

Obama Administration "Hyding" Taxpayer Funding of Abortion in Health Care Bills

by Susan Willis

Addressing health care reform in his September 9 speech to Congress, President Obama assured the American public that under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions. This was truly a welcome pledge. Up to this point, one Congressional committee after another has rejected pro-life amendments to do exactly this. At press time for this column, we are approaching the eleventh hour. Five bills have been reported by Congressional committees, and all five would permit or mandate the use of federal revenues for health coverage that includes elective abortions. Now would be an excellent time for the Administration to weigh in on a federal abortion funding ban. Such a move would make sense politically as well as morally. A September 2009 survey commissioned by the Catholic bishops conference found that 67% of Americans oppose measures that would require people to pay for abortion coverage with their federal taxes while only 19% favor such measures; 68% said they do not want abortion in their own insurance coverage while 24% said they do.

Abortion Practitioner Writes of Doing Abortions While Pregnant With Unborn Baby
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a post that is quickly causing jaws to drop from readers across the world, a Michigan-based abortion practitioner has written of how she does abortions at the same time she is pregnant. Lisa Harris is an abortion practitioner and a assistant professor at the University of Michigan. In a blog post titled "Second Trimester Abortion Provision: Breaking the Silence and Changing the Discourse," Harris reveals a terrible hypocrisy that pro-life advocates are calling a "cognitive dissonance." Harris' article originally appeared in the May 2008 issue of the journal "Reproductive Health Matters" but has gained its greatest attention as a blog post at the blog "Abortioneers." "There was a leg and foot in my forceps, and a thump, thump in my abdomen. Instantly, tears were streaming from my eyes," Harris notes of doing an abortion while pregnant. She calls the experience of doing an abortion on an unborn child at 18 week gestation a "brutally visceral" experience given she is 18 weeks pregnant herself. "Abortion is different from other surgical procedures," Harris admits, calling it "violent." Full story at LifeNews.com

Canadian Woman Survives Botched Abortion in Montreal That Nearly Killed Her
Montreal, Quebec (LifeNews.com) -- A Canadian woman barely survived a botched legal second-trimester abortion that nearly killed her. Christelle Dupuis-Labelle, 19, was three months into her pregnancy when she went to the CLSC des Faubourgs abortion center in Quebec for an abortion that didn't go as expected. After a morning abortion, Dupuis-Labelle spent two hours recovering from the procedure before issuing complaints that she was bleeding heavily from it. Despite the problems, the young woman tells a Canadian newspaper that the abortion center let her leave. "There was lots of blood," she told the Le Journal de Montreal in an interview on Wednesday. "I told a nurse, but they let me go anyway." Dupuis-Labelle's boyfriend picked her up form the abortion facility for the 45 minute drive home to St. Jerome, during which her heavy bleeding continued and her pain increased. "Every step I took, [the blood] flowed," she said. "They said that I had lost much blood and that five minutes later, that it could have been fatal to me." Early Thursday afternoon, the couple arrived at the hospital in St. Jerome where doctors performed an emergency operation and gave her a complete blood transfusion. Full story at LifeNews.com

Pro-Abortion Group Says Abortion Drug That Has Killed 13 Women "Saves Lives"
Amsterdam, Netherlands (LifeNews.com) -- The pro-abortion group that operated the controversial Abortion Boat before it was retired has a new mission: to get the dangerous abortion drug to women in nations where abortions are illegal. In a huge headline at its web site, Women on Waves proclaims, "Abortions with pills save women's lives." Never mind that the abortion drug mifepristone is responsible for the deaths of at least 13 women in the United States, Canada, England, Sweden and France. "The best and safest way a woman can do an abortion herself until the 9th week of pregnancy is with the use of two medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol," the abortion group tells women. "A medical abortion done this way has a success rate of more than 97%." Yet, according to FDA reports as of December 2006, there have been nine life-threatening incidents, 116 women who required blood transfusions, and 232 women who needed hospitalizations because of severe medical problems. In total, more than 1,100 American women have had medical problems after using the drug as of that date. Full story at LifeNews.com

40 Days for Life Participant in Fresno, California Assaulted by Abortion Advocate
by Anna Franzonello
Fresno, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life person who participated in the 40 Days for Life event in Fresno, California was assaulted on Thursday afternoon by an abortion advocate. Victor Fierro, director of the Hispanic pro-life group Latinos4Life, was the victim of an assault by a woman who first tried to intimidate him. Yesterday, a pro-abortion woman shouted obscenities at participants in the 40 Days for Life event, which is part of a national campaign. The woman first attempted to break a security camera pro-life advocates installed to protect themselves and catch any harmful activity on tape. The attacker then cut Fierro s arm with an unknown object, drawing blood, stormed back to her car and fled the scene. Josh Brahm, the education director of Right to Life of Central California, told LifeNews.com that much of the encounter took place right behind the camera, but the audio was captured by the device. It also registered her face and license plate number.

Organ Harvesting: Now Defining Defenseless Human Beings as Natural Resources
by Wesley J. Smith
For years, organ transplant ethicists and some in the bioethics community have agitated to change the definition of death from a purely biological determination, to one based in utilitarianism and desired sociological narratives. Why mess with death? Too few organs are donated for transplant, leading to long waiting lines and the deaths of some people who might be saved were organs more readily available. But why redefine death? The point of this reckless advocacy although they don't put it this bluntly is that there are thousands of perfectly good organs being used by people who really don't need them anymore, by which they mean patients with profound cognitive impairments who will remain unconscious or minimally aware for the rest of their lives. Why not harvest such patients, this thinking goes, for the benefit of people who could return to normal lives? The problem is that would break the dead donor rule, the legal and moral pact organ transplant medicine made with society promising that vital organs would only be harvested from patients who are truly dead. Hence, if the definition of death were loosened to include, say, a diagnosis of persistent vegetative state, more organs could be obtained and the dead donor rule could still appear to be honored, deemed essential for transplant medicine to retain the trust of society. Woman Leaves Baby to Die in Bag, Gets 13 Years; Abortion Prompts Infanticide
by Cathy Ruse
How can anyone ignore the irony in this awful story reported in the Washington Post yesterday? A young woman walks out into a field with a pink towel, scissors, and a plastic bag, gives birth to a daughter, cuts the umbilical cord and leaves the baby to die. Of course she could have had an abortionist legally kill the child.
The Supreme Court case of Doe v. Bolton mandates that an abortion be legal even after viability if an abortion doctor cites emotional or familial reasons for the abortion. During a post-arrest interview the woman said she had been raped, and the prosecutor said the woman got rid of the baby because she was afraid the man she was living with, whom she considered her husband, would break up with her for having another man s child. Plenty of legal grounds for a late-term abortion. Full story at LifeNews.com

British Woman Gives Birth to Baby and Dumps Body at Local Recycling Plant
Lincolnshire, England (LifeNews.com) -- A British woman is making international headlines for giving birth to a baby boy and dumping his body at a local recycling plant. Police officials are currently trying to identify the baby's mother, who wrapped her newborn son in a black bin liner on a conveyor belt at the Greenstar Recycling Plant. A worker at the plant discovered the body of the infant, who was no more than two or three days old at the time his mother discarded him. The worker was searching for glass in piles of rubbish when he discovered the boy's body. "At this stage we are investigating the death of a baby who was probably no more than two or three days old," detective Stuart Gibbon told the London Telegraph newspaper today.
