Associated Press Again Confirms Health Care Bills Include Abortion Funding
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Associated Press has confirmed again that the current health care reform bills in Congress include massive abortion funding and mandates. Top Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs may want to read the article because he wrongly told reporters twice last week that the Hyde Amendment stop the funding. In a new analysis of the health care bills written by AP reporter Charles Babington, the news service answers the question, "Would new health care legislation allow abortions to be funded with tax money?" "The proposed legislation would permit government-sponsored health plans, open to non-Medicaid patients, to cover abortions," Babington writes. "In seeking a political compromise, a House version would require publicly sponsored plans to pay for abortions," and that the money could come from "customers' premiums." Douglas Johnson, the legislative director for National Right to Life, emailed LifeNews.com to respond and said the AP story is "accurate" on those points. Still, he disagreed with AP's characterization of the funding as coming from "private" dollars" because the money becomes public taxpayer dollars once citizens send it to the government. Pro-Life Democrat Promises No Health Care Bill if Pelosi Blocks Abortion Vote
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The leading pro-life Democrat in the House has again renewed his pledge to stop the pro-abortion health care bills if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won't allow an amendment to revoke abortion funding. Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan has repeatedly said as many as 40 pro-life and moderate Democrats could walk. There are many of us Democrats in the House who are philosophically, legally, and morally opposed to public funding for abortions, Stupak told CNS News today. If our amendment is not made in order we will try to shut down the rule, preventing the health care bill from coming to the floor for a vote, Stupak added. He said he and a large coalition of pro-life Democrats and Republicans want a chance to vote on an amendment to remove the massive abortion subsidies and mandates found in the current bill, HR 3200. The amendment would consist of the similar language to the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits abortion funding only in the HHS legislation that includes Medicaid program. We want the chance to offer our amendment, the Hyde Amendment, on the floor of the House," he said. Stupak also responded to top Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, who falsely said twice last week that the Hyde amendment would stop abortion funding in the health care bills. Obama Admin Won't Withdraw Nomination of Pro-Abortion Dawn Johnsen
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Obama administration has no plans to withdraw the nomination of pro-abortion activist attorney Dawn Johnsen, who would head the Office of Legal Counsel if approved by the Senate. However, the chances of her confirmation are sketchy because of her pro-abortion activism. White House attorney Gregory Craig on Friday indicated the Obama administration is standing behind the embattled nominee. "I know of no plans to withdraw any nominees," President Obama's top in-house lawyer says, though he did not elaborate. Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters that Johnsen's nomination has been pending for "far too long," but he said he is confident she will be confirmed. I expect that Dawn Johnsen will be confirmed. Her nomination has been pending, from my own parochial interest, for far too long. I'd like to have her here with me and running the Office of Legal Counsel, he said. Any battle to approve Johnsen's nomination could take place in the coming weeks as the Senate has confirmed pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, although the protracted health care debate could hold it up further. Catholics Should Oppose the Public Option Because It Means Funding Abortions
by Deal Hudson
This week, the Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to vote on the health-care bill. If it passes, the Finance bill will be reconciled with the bill already passed by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Then health-care reform will go to the Senate floor for a vote. The Finance Committee version does not contain the "public option," government-run insurance to compete with private insurance carriers. The Health Committee version, meanwhile, includes the public option and requires employers to offer their employees health insurance. Both versions leave the door open to abortion coverage. And it's very likely that any health-care legislation that makes it to the desk of President Obama will ultimately contain the public option, since both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi view it as "essential." While the bishops have made it very clear they will not support any reform that includes abortion, they are in favor of a public option, viewing it as the key to meeting two of their three health-care criteria: that it should be affordable and accessible to everyone, including legal immigrants and "those who live at or near the poverty level." But do they realize that, with a public option, abortion coverage will inevitably follow -- if not now, then assuredly later? Full story at LifeNews.com

Pro-Life Groups Representing 30 Million: Do Health Care Right, Keep Abortion Out
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A coalition of pro-life groups representing more than 30 million people have released a collective statement encouraging Congressional leaders to do health care reform the right way. They say common ground can be found on promoting better and more available health care without promoting abortion and rationing. The groups include numerous pro-life and faith-based organizations who want to be on record voicing their opposition to any health care bills that fund abortion, violate the conscience rights of medical professionals, or rations health care for seniors. Mathew Staver, a pro-life attorney with Liberty Counsel, represents the coalition of groups, which includes LifeNews.com, the pro-life news service. "We believe social justice includes healthcare reform that lowers the cost, increases quality, and expands choice at the greatest convenience, without moving private health decisions from the doctor's office to Washington bureaucrats," he told LifeNews.com today. "Individual liberties trump government-imposed obligations. We believe that individuals, communities, and doctors in the free market make better health decisions than government mandates. We believe in incentives, not coercion," he added. Full story at LifeNews.com
New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The New York Times is well-known for its pro-abortion bias, but the Gray Lady is drawing praise from pro-life advocates after a news story and an online pictorial that includes pictures showing babies who are victims of abortions. One prominent pro-life advocate says she believes the Times is the first major mainstream media outlet to show them. On Saturday, the New York Times included a front-page, above-the-fold news story that presents a strangely fair portrayal of pro-life advocates who engage in street activism. Meanwhile, the Times' Photography, Video, and Visual Journalism online section features a photo montage showing the pictures of babies who died in abortions. Monica Migliorino Miller, a Michigan pro-life advocate and professor at Madonna University, has taken so many pictures of babies killed in abortions she is regarded as an expert of sorts. She told LifeNews.com over the weekend that the Times show and online pictorial is "nearly unprecedented in 37 years of legalized abortion." Full story at LifeNews.com

I Am 71 Campaign Grows to Oppose Taxpayer Funded Abortion in Health Care
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The latest grassroots campaign against taxpayer-funded abortions in the health care bills in Congress is growing by leaps and bounds. It's no surprise that the "I Am 71" campaign is gaining momentum given that 71 percent of American, according to a Zogby poll, oppose abortion funding in health care. With all of the current health care bills pending in Congress allowing massive abortion funding, the campaign is sorely needed. As the Senate Finance Committee prepares to vote the last pro-abortion health care bill out to the Senate floor tomorrow, the founder of the campaign says more Americans need to speak up. Operation Rescue president Troy Newman tells LifeNews.com that the Baucus bill the panel will consider would be the first step toward forcing the American people to fund abortions through a national health care system despite the polling results. "Nearly three quarters of Americans oppose this ill-advised legislation that would force us to violate our consciences by funding abortions with our tax dollars," Newman said today. Hundreds of Thousands of Pro-Life Students to Stand in Solidarity on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Hundreds of thousands of pro-life students are ready to stand in solidarity on abortion as the Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity takes place a week from Tuesday. Last year, from over 4,700 campuses in 25 countries participated in the event and sponsors expect even more this year. The day sees the students at middle and high schools and on college campuses wear pro-life t-shirts, sport red tape on their mouths to show how the unborn can't speak up, and the distribution of fliers educating students and the public about abortion. The event's man sponsor, Stand True Ministries, tells LifeNews.com, one of several groups supporting the event, that at least 58 young women canceled appointments for abortions after the special day took place last year. Bryan Kemper, the pro-life group's president, says students are always excited every year to bring attention to the devastating travesty of abortion that is killing 4,000 unborn children and injuring women every day. "The students are speaking loud and clear; they want an end to legalized child-killing," he said of the students and young adults involved in the effort. "We are getting thousands of e-mails, comments and Internet messages from students thanking us for giving them a peaceful way to stand up and be counted." Full story at LifeNews.com
