Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

For clear thinking about crucial issues, visit LifeIssues.net

Dear Friends for Life,

Concerning the abortion breast cancer link, Dr. Gerard Nadal, microbiologist, St. John's University in New York, has announced that there are so many published studies confirming the link between induced abortions and breast cancer that he will be publishing one each day on his blog until he has mentioned them all. He states that this will take from October into January or February of next year. He states that "today begins the inexorable presentation of the scientific literature on the abortion cancer link."

[Endless attack on women] ==> Women who refuse abortions often face violence. Pregnant women who have refused demands from their husbands or boyfriends to have abortions are often subjected to violent attacks that sometimes even result in their deaths. This is from a new report from the Elliot Institute entitled "Forced Abortion in America." (PDF) Studies of death rates among pregnant women in the U.S. revealed that homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women. This is a U.S. study but it very likely could be duplicated in almost any other country.

God Bless,
Fr. Jerry, OMI

(A Thought) "How pernicious it is that, in society which, for the pursuit of the common good, depends upon citizens acting in obedience to their conscience, her government attempts to compel her citizens to violate their conscience in its most fundamental tenets pertaining to the dignity of all human life and the integrity of the family!" -Cardinal Raymond Burke, Nov. 22, 2010

ITEM #1: Planned Parenthood seeking to lower age of sexual consent to 14 in Peru

The International Planned Parenthood Federation is promoting a new bill in Peru that would lower the age of sexual consent to 14 years of age, provoking outrage from pro-family groups and warnings that the country could be converted into a "sexual paradise" for child predators. Bishops warn of "sexual paradise" for child predators if bill succeeds.

ITEM #2: Seoul research a win for Church stem cell policy

Recent research by a South Korean Catholic hospital has shown that adult stem cells can provide a highly effective treatment for malignant brain tumors and other types of cancer.

ITEM #3: Another Korean Stem Cell Scandal?

The Korea Times reports that RNL Bio, a Korean biotech company, is suspected of arranging for thousands of patients to get stem cell treatments that are illegal in Korea in affiliated clinics in China and Japan. In effect, RNL Bio is promoting "stem cell tourism" as an end run around the fact that its product has not been approved by regulators in its home country.

ITEM #4: Australia warns people trafficking from Southeast Asia under reported

The known numbers of people trafficked to Australia remain low. In 2008, there were 113 people identified. Many of the cases involve the sex industry but there's growing concern that more cases are to be found in other sectors. A new report shows South Korea was the main source-country for trafficked sex workers to Australia in 2009-2010. The issues will be discussed at a national round-table meeting in Canberra later this week, along with proposals to add new offenses to the Australian criminal code.

ITEM #5: Famous pro-abortion feminist calls unborn child a 'tumor'

The well-known pro-abortion feminist and psychologist Florence Thomas has published an account of her illegal abortion at the age of 22, obtained in the mid-1960s in France, in which she refers to her unborn child as a "tumor."

ITEM #6: It's common sense not to have sex with AIDS, condom or not

All theological arguments aside, it makes no sense to engage in sexual activity while one of the persons is infected with AIDS. To do so would be to endanger the life of the sexual partner. To do so with a condom also endangers the life of the partner because condoms break, and because even when they don't break they can't possibly offer 100% protection against AIDS. It is Russian roulette.

ITEM #7: CEDAW Should Promote Women, Human Rights, Not Abortion

This human rights treaty, adopted by the United Nations in 1979, has a laudable goal, as its name suggests, to end discriminatory practices towards women - Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Nowhere in CEDAW is a "right" to abortion mentioned. However, from 1995 to 2009, the CEDAW Committee's "observations" and "recommendations" have sought to pressure 83 nations to legalize abortion and expand "access" to it.

ITEM #8: The Pope: Condom-Mania vs Catholic Truth

But if you want the Catholic explanation to the Holy Father's words, Professor Janet Smith provides it when she says, "He says that the Church does not find condoms to be a 'real or moral solution.' That means the Church does not find condoms either to be moral or an effective way of fighting the transmission of HIV. As the Holy Father indicates in his fuller answer, the most effective portion of programs designed to reduce the transmission of HIV are calls to abstinence and fidelity."

*******************************************************

ITEM #9: Raped, Pregnant and Afraid

Life presents many hardships to each and every one of us. The solution is never to kill or lash out in anger, but rather to embrace the opportunity to bring good out of even the most emotionally devastating experience. Let us pray that this young woman chooses life, not death, for her child.

ITEM #10: Deflating the New York Times Condom Scoop

What humane purpose is served by this media obsession with condoms? What happens to the press's vaunted willingness to challenge conventional wisdom when the issue at hand is anything touching on sexual license? It seems to disappear. And one fears that a lot of people are seriously hurt - and die - as at least an indirect result. Consciences indeed need to be examined in the matter of condoms, Catholics, and AIDS. But the consciences in question are those of the press.

ITEM #11: AIDS in S. Africa: Responsible Behavior May be Only Way to Prevent Devastation

This is so awful. South Africa has a population of about 50 million. Nearly 6 million of them have HIV. And a new study expects another 5 million contract it in the next two decades.

****************************************

ITEM #12: Violence Against Women Linked to HIV Risk

When the women became infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS), many already had a long history of abuse and gender violence that made them more vulnerable, according to the study. Seventy percent of the 399 HIV-positive women interviewed in the four countries said they had endured psychological abuse -- the most widespread -- manifest in humiliation, insults, mocking and scorn. Likewise, 55.6 percent suffered physical violence from parents, stepparents, caretakers and then from boyfriends or husbands, which included punching, shoving, slapping, beating (with fists or objects), kicking, burning and choking.
