Dear Friends For Life, Kerala, India - Only Two Kids? Catholic and Muslim leaders in the state of Kerala India are protesting the government's recent proposal to begin a population control policy, limiting a family to two children. Violators will be punished with fines and imprisonment. It states "no person or institution shall use religion, region, sect, caste, cult, or other ulterior inducement for the bearing of more than two children." Not waiting for the legislation to be passed, Catholic and Muslim leaders have come out strongly opposed to this proposal. Europe takes a stand and bans the patent of stem cells. In late October the European Court of Justice issued a ruling banning patents of stem cell technology based on destruction of human embryos. This is binding on all twenty-seven member states and confirms their position of protecting human life from its beginning. Hopefully this will end any further attempts of claiming that the human blastocyst, embryo and fetus are not yet human.

(Focus on Asia): "Pakistan: The bullet riddled bodies of nine more missing persons including one journalist were found" - The disappearances and extrajudicial killings continue and not a single day goes by without the abduction and murder of activists. The family members of disappeared persons who were holding a protest meeting and token hunger strike outside the Quetta Press Club at the capital of Balochistan province were warned by some plain clothed persons that they should wind up their meeting otherwise they would face serious problems. Since July 2010 to date, there have been 215 extrajudicial killings of missing persons.

Some macabre children's toys are on sale in northern Kazakhstan, according to press reports. The gruesome playthings appear to imitate an abortion or miscarriage, an Interfax report said: "A plastic keg-shaped box contains a human embryo in red liquid. If the cover of the container opens, the embryo falls out together with sticky mucus."

The National Health Service (NHS) has for the first time published statistics of the abuse and neglect of the elderly. The figures reveal that almost 500 cases of such abuse and neglect are reported every week. Incidents include denial of food and medication.

The production and proliferation of internet pornography is increasing at an unprecedented rate. More troubling still is the toxic relationship consumers of pornography seem to be developing with this material, thanks to the enormous volume of it available on demand. Researchers like Gail Dines are only just scratching the surface of how destructive that relationship can be, with men in particular experiencing an inexorable pull into ever-more extreme forms of smut.

Yet challenges to the pornography industry continue to be dismissed as uncool, anti-sex and moral panics.

ITEM #12: Technique spots patients misdiagnosed as being in 'vegetative state'
Comment: While the misdiagnosis of "vegetative" is now accepted, this is only a small part of the real story. Since the Nancy Cruzan case 2 decades ago and the subsequent big push for "living wills", it has become virtually routine to withdraw treatment as soon as possible, sometime even hours after a brain trauma, stroke, etc. Doctors and ethicists assured the public that they could reliably make the "vegetative" diagnosis with the "hopeless" prognosis and the most humane answer was to "pull the plug."
For years, some of us have been speaking and writing about the amazing reawakenings of "vegetative" patients basically using time and stimulation but were rebuffed by the supposed experts. How many thousands of people lost their lives prematurely because of this? And of course, how could the non-heartbeating organ donation (aka DCD) protocol develop without such a hopeless prognosis being accepted before such people could be weaned off ventilators?
Please go to the URL and read the comments. So many reactions are basically "So what? I wouldn't want to live without being able to move even I was conscious!" Unlike the often cited anti-death penalty principle of "better 9 guilty people go free rather than one innocent person is executed", the new thinking is apparently the opposite when it comes to PVS and providing basic care. Note this quote from a bioethicist: "It would be very sad indeed if this and related research engendered doubts that lead to prolonged treatment of the large majority of patients who are accurately diagnosed as vegetative." Where is the humility or interest in helping such people get better?
