Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues
Dear Friends for Life,

Respect for Women in a number of Asian countries is still far from being good. A typical rape case in Pakistan is making headlines, "Rape victim and 'black virgin' Kainat Soomro condemned to die in Pakistan over rape". The Asian Human Rights Commission is reporting on this injustice and shares A poem in solidarity with Kainat Soomro - a victim of frayed justice.

Kainat Soomro was violently gang-raped by four men in the rural village of Dadu in southern Pakistan in 2009 when she was 13 years-of-age. As typically happens in Pakistan, rather than rush to the young girl's defence the village elders decreed that she had brought shame upon the village and ordered her family to kill her. The Asian Human Rights Commission earlier reported on the incident in several interventions. Four years later, and after losing her brother who was assassinated by the perpetrators, Kainat continues to struggle for justice. Please refer to:

PAKISTAN: Judge humiliates teenage rape victim in open court

PAKISTAN: Gender-biased judge should be transferred from rape trials

PAKISTAN: The brother of a rape victim has been found murdered three months after his arrest

PAKISTAN: Complainant of a 14-year-old girl's gang-rape case is murdered in order to force the relatives withdrawing the complaint

In solidarity with the Kainat Soomro and as a tribute to her courage, Airyn Lentija Sloan, a Filipino poet based in Hong Kong has written the following poem in response to an article published recently in news.com.au. This article may be seen here. The Poem can be viewed here.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Life): "What we learn before we're born"Pop quiz: When does learning begin? Answer: Before we are born. Science writer Annie Murphy Paul talks through new research that shows how much we learn in the womb -- from the lilt of our native language to our soon-to-be-favorite foods..

ITEM #1: 1,200 too many: A look at born-alive abortion statistics

Twelve hundred babies surviving abortions in the U.S., even in just one year, is a conservative estimate. Thousands of children have survived abortions in the forty years following the national legalization of abortion in 1973. Just eight years after Roe v. Wade, Liz Jeffries and Rick Edmonds were named Pulitzer Prize finalists for their series on the live-birth abortions already epidemic in the abortion industry. Jeffries and Edmonds recorded heartbreaking testimonies from nurses who held and comforted dying abortion survivors. They also revealed the magnitude of these horrors:

ITEM #2: What if we applied pro-aborts' anti-intellectualism to other scientific questions?

The more abortion debates center around babies developed enough to think and feel and resemble adorable newborns, the more pro-lifers gain a nigh-insurmountable advantage. The savvier pro-aborts clumsily try to change the subject or qualify that of course they'd allow abortions only for extreme medical circumstances late in pregnancy (which isn't true, but that's another article), and the few honest enough to admit they just don't care rightly come across as monsters.
****************************************

ITEM #3:  Can a mentally ill woman consent to an abortion?

One of the ways that abortion advocates like to claim that abortion is "health care" is by claiming that it can sometimes be necessary for the health of the mother, or to save her life. Included in the "health of the mother" argument is mental health, because some women could become suicidal if not permitted to have an abortion. In such a situation, a woman should clearly be allowed to have an abortion, right?

****************************************

ITEM #4: Homosexual Orientation, or Disorientation?

Embracing a gay identity prevents us from knowing ourselves as we are known by God. Instead, we are kept captive by faulty categories of the human person, created in the mind of man. It is more than mere semantics. In departing from the clear teaching of the Church on our sexual identity, we do injury to our personal dignity as being male or female image-bearers of God and prevent ourselves from resolving the most fundamental question each of us strives to answer: "Who am I?" More problematically, when we defend these false descriptions of man, we go against the clear teachings of the Church and lead others to embrace one of the great confusions of our age.
****************************************

ITEM #5: The Church (and bioethics) in the (post) modern world

It is 50 years since the Second Vatican Council opened in Rome. For Catholics, the Council marked a significant transition in self-awareness - from a Church which saw itself as largely set 'apart' from the world to one which is deeply connected with - literally 'in' - the world.
****************************************
ITEM #6: Dutch Docs Pushed to Euthanaize More Demented
It is rare when the government has to push Netherlander doctors to be more aggressive with euthanasia. But that is what is happening around the killing of Alzheimer's patients based on an advance directive.

****************************************

ITEM #7 HHS Website For Girls, 10 To 16, Informs Youth About Birth Control, Gay Sex, 'Mutual Masturbation'
A government website designed for girls ages 10 to 16 offers health advice and information on a wide range of topics, including homosexuality, anal sex and "mutual masturbation."
Obama Admin Website Promotes Sex, Birth Control to Girls as Young as 10
An Obama administration web site operated by the Department of Health and Human Services pushes information on sex and birth control to girls as young as 10 years of age. The Health and Human Services' girlshealth.gov web site is intended for girls 10-16-years-old.
****************************************

ITEM #8: A Philosophical Defense for the Personhood of the Unborn

Abortion, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, InVitro Fertilization - all are procedures that involve the unbor.
****************************************

ITEM #9: PAKISTAN: Traditional marriages ignore HIV/AIDS threat

Bound by 'watta satta', a cultural tradition of exchanged marriage between two families, Nuzhat (not her real name), 22, cannot disclose her HIV status.

****************************************

ITEM #10: India now biggest source of migrants to Australia: Report

India has become the leading source of permanent migrants to Australia for the first time, ahead of China, a government report showed on Monday.
****************************************
ITEM #11: The Cost of Cloning
The creation of human embryos in this way is prohibited by Catholic teaching, regardless of whether the intention of the researchers is to generate a baby (reproductive cloning) or to generate cells or tissues to treat diseases (therapeutic cloning).
**************************************** ITEM #12: Abortion, Contraception Consequences on Display in Gosnell's 'house of horrors'
But the link between infanticide and abortion is not the only issue raised by this case. There is also the larger question of how human life is regarded, in a culture where contraception is widespread and abortion becomes "backup birth control." After all, most women who seek an abortion are on some form of birth control.
