Special Volusia County thrift store helps foster, homeless and orphaned children

ORMOND BEACH --

KR Fashions is ready for a ribbon-cutting Monday, but Saturday the thrift store had a sneak-peek opening.

But this store is not just for anybody. It's the result of two non-profit organizations coming together to help foster, homeless and orphaned children find cloths and other supplies they may not be able to get.

Rachel Arazashvili, Executive Director of Kidds Are First, which along with R.O.C.K. Fashions is responsible for KR Fashions. She said a big reason they can open the store is thanks to a contest they won.

MBA Business Center in Ormond Beach held a contest last year, with the winning business plan getting free rent for a year.  KR Fashions won, enabling volunteers to focus more on raising money to help the kids than the overhead for the actual store.

Carol and John Aller, a couple from Daytona Beach Shores stopped in Saturday to shop for their latest addition. They've been fostering kids for more than 20 years and they're on foster child number 70.

Carol said a store like this, which does not charge the families, could help some people sitting on the fence when it comes to fostering. She said this service could help alleviate concerns about clothing a potential foster child.

Arazashvili said they're committed for the year, but hopes they can find other businesses and organizations to partner with them to keep the store open for even longer.

Currently, they only accept clients based on referrals from a variety of social service organizations in Flagler, Volusia, St Johns and Putnam Counties. But they're always looking for donations from anyone.

KR Fashions is located at 1437 N. US 1 in Ormond Beach. The store is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is a great idea! I hope they do well. If you are visiting Florida (the Orlando area), why not stop by and purchase something?
