“Taking the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to
heaven, He said the blessing, broke them, and gave them to the disciples
to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied.”

Corpus Christi – the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Dear Friends,
If you pass a Catholic church in the month of May, you may see
children dressed up in white dresses or in black or white suits. They
are making their First Communion – a very special Sacrament for
Catholics. At Holy Mass they receive Jesus, the Bread of life, the Bread
that comes from heaven for the first time.
The Gospel for the feast looks back to when Jesus blessed, broke, and
multiplied the loaves and fish. But note how the disciples played their
part. They were the ones to distribute the bread and fish to satisfy
the hunger of the crowd.
No need to remind us of the many in our world, including millions of
children, who go to bed hungry. As we recall the great gift of Jesus in
the sacrament of Communion, as we recall how the disciples of Jesus
shared the bread and fish, we might also be reminded of our own
obligation to reach out and share bread with others.

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow men and women
throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them,
through our hands, this day their daily bread and by our understanding
love, give peace and joy.
Amen
