One of two-sister team takes plea deal in illegal abortions case; other still faces trial on felony charges in LA and San Diego
One woman of a two-sister pair accused of practicing medicine without a license for a chain of Southern California abortion clinics catering to low-income Hispanics has been sentenced to three years formal probation, ordered to perform 500 hours of community service and to pay $3,270 in restitution to six victims.
Raquel Bugarin, 50, of Los Angeles was sentenced Oct. 1 by Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta after pleading no contest to three counts of felony practicing medicine without a license, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's office. As part of a plea bargain, four other felony counts were dismissed.
Raquel Bugarin and her sister, Bertha Bugarin, 48, of Granada Hills, were charged a year ago following an investigation by the Health Authority Law Enforcement Task force (HALT), a multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional task force that is overseen by the Los Angles County Department of Public Health, the press release said.
