Were there to be no support in the whole history of ethical and moral thought, were there no acknowledged confirmation from medical science, were the history of legal opinion to the contrary, we would still have to conclude on the basis of God's Holy Word that the unborn child is a person in the sight of God. He is protected by the sanctity of life graciously given to each individual by the Creator, Who alone places His image upon man and grants them any right to life which they have.

Benedict XVI: No embryonic stem cell research

Pope Benedict XVI today confirmed the Catholic Church's support for and commitment to stem cell research, while reiterating the basic moral notion that real scientific progress cannot be had at the expense of human dignity, but must always serve the authentic human good.

The Holy Father was addressing the participants in a major international conference that took place here at the Vatican this week under the joint sponsorship of the Pontifical Council for Culture and the biotech firm NeoStem under the heading: Adult Stem Cells: Science and the Future of Man and Culture.
