Is Obama's Invitation to the Al Smith Dinner
Causing Catholics to Lose Faith?
By Judie Brown
Just as the shepherd who lost a sheep faithfully and fervently seeks the one lost, so must the hierarchy of the Church seek those who have lost faith because of actions that have created confusion or consternation. When members of the clergy send mixed messages to congregations regarding Church teachings, it often leads to frustration. And this frustration may lead people to leave the Church. As shepherds, the leaders of the Church cannot allow this to happen. Today's commentary addresses one such situation and encourages us to stand up for Church teaching so that no more sheep will be lost.

$4.6 billion can indeed be your legacy to Africa and other poor parts of the world. But let it be a legacy that leads life, love and laughter into the world in need. I see this $4.6 billion buying us misery. I see it buying us unfaithful husbands. I see it buying us streets devoid of the innocent chatter of children. I see it buying us disease and untimely death. I see it buying us a retirement without the tender loving care of our children. Please Melinda, listen to the heart-felt cry of an African woman and mercifully channel your funds to pay for what we REALLY need.

With millions upon millions of babies whose lives have ended through legalized abortion, there are millions upon millions of post abortive women who are suffering and in anguish because of a 'choice' they were told they would never regret. These women are hurting not only for the loss of their motherhood, but even more, for the irreplaceable loss of their son or daughter. "A Love Note from your Aborted Baby," a 5 minute film, seeks to awaken post abortive women to the reality that their baby has not been lost forever, but that each child has an existence in God and is yearning to be reunited to a forgiven and healed mother at the end of life's journey.

The Public Discourse

In recent weeks, the New Jersey state legislature spent the closing days of the legislative session quietly trying to weaken restrictions for gestational surrogates in the state. Their efforts were foiled, however, when Governor Chris Christie vetoed the bill last Wednesday, August 8, citing "the profound change in the traditional beginnings of the family that this bill will enact." For advocates of women's health, children's rights, and stable families, this is a huge victory. It also should be used as a teaching moment to expose the many moral and ethical concerns raised by surrogacy, and the health risks to mothers and children that surrogacy introduces.
