Senate Democrats yesterday blocked a vote on defunding
Planned Parenthood.
It’s hard to believe that they still voted to have your tax dollars
support this abortion giant -- even after explosive revelations from
those
undercover videos.
But we held a vote and we got everyone on the record.
And we made progress!
Two Democrats voted
our way: Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Sen. Joe Manchin of West
Virginia.
Donnelly voted to defund Planned Parenthood when he served in the House
back in 2011. We are glad he stayed the course in the Senate.
Manchin had a change of heart. Back in
2011, he voted to protect taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood. But today, he voted our way. He said:
“I
am very troubled by the
callous behavior of Planned Parenthood staff in recently released
videos, which casually discuss the sale, possibly for profit, of fetal
tissue after
an abortion. Until these allegations have been answered and resolved, I
do not believe that taxpayer money should be used to fund this
organization;
instead those funds should be sent to other health care providers,
including community health centers, which provide important women’s
healthcare services.”
He’s exactly right. We can provide women with the health care they
need without giving money to an organization that commits over
300,000 abortions every year.
Because of Senate rules, you need 60 votes to cut off
debate. Even though a majority voted to end debate, the motion failed
53-46. One
pro-life Senator was out of town. And because of Senate rules,
Republican Leader Mitch McConnell voted no in order to preserve the
right to bring the
vote back to the floor whenever he wants.
Thank you to everyone who called their Senators. We are making a difference.
While we came up short, let’s remember this: We
effectively have 13 more votes than we did in 2011. We need just five more votes to make this happen.
And we will hold those that voted No to account. This is not like
before. These videos have changed everything and they can’t claim
ignorance anymore. They voted to protect the harvesting of body parts
from
children… and we must keep the pressure on.
