Work as if it all depends on you, pray as if it all depends on God. How many times have we heard this bit of wisdom, yet how often do we forget?
We have a great deal of work
to do, but our work will not have any effect if we set prayer aside -
if we don't make every effort to let God place us where we need to be,
when we need to be there. The ugliness that is Planned Parenthood has
come more clearly into view, awakening many, and inspiring many to get
involved. One chance to do something concrete is coming up with the
August 22nd national protest. Please click on the link below and see how
you can help organize your local community in prayer and action.
We are also beginning to
hear more about troubles that are coming to light regarding the upcoming
synod on family. Here, as much as anywhere, prayer and fasting are
needed, informed by a sober analysis of where things stand. I refer you
to an article below by Mark Latkovic, a contributor to HLI's Truth and
Charity Forum. We will be talking about this quite a bit in the coming
weeks.
Finally, I implore you to
pray for our brothers and sisters in Chile. This South American pro-life
nation has become a model of how to improve maternal health while
maintaining very strong restrictions on abortion, so of course they are
under attack. HLI's Marlene Gillette reports in articles below that
after an inspiring campaign of prayer and many strong statements from
Church leaders and others in defense of life, Chile suffered a major
setback this week. They will need our prayers in order to help hold
their representatives accountable, and put up a strong defense of life.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Shenan J. Boquet

Representative
Gustavo Hasbún, a member of the Independent Democratic Union Party, led
the opposition to the abortion measure in the Commission. After the vote
he told the media that, if the abortion legislative bill is approved in
September the five legislators who opposed the measure will file a
complaint before the Constitutional Court of Chile, asserting the
inherent unconstitutionality of the abortion bill. - continue -

Cardinal Ricardo
Ezzati, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Santiago and President of the
Chile Conference of Catholic Bishops, told El Mercurio newspaper
in February that abortion is contrary to logic and the conviction that
the life of the human person must be defended from conception. Ignacio
Sánchez, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile, stated
that in their network of health services no abortions will be committed.
No fewer than nineteen other clinics and hospitals in the country have
also stated that abortion will not be allowed on their premises, and
many medical professionals and medical students have asserted that they
will not perform abortions. - continue -

As HLI President Father Shenan Boquet recently stated:
"The U.S. government has given Planned Parenthood pass after pass
despite many revelations of its malfeasance and corruption, keeping
hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars flowing to this sick and very
profitable 'non-profit' business. We can only pray that this most recent
revelation will wake up what remains of the consciences of our leaders
in Washington, leading to a massive investigation of this evil abortion
business and the prosecution of all who have let this evil persist." - continue -

Undoubtedly, the
Church, as many of her perpetually petulant liberal members like to
remind the more traditionally minded, does not have all of the answers
to the world's problems. But while Vatican Council II (1962-1965)
affirmed this point, it never said that the Church doesn't have any answers to these problems. It's a non sequitur to say that just because the Church can't answer every question, that she has no answers at all to propose. The Church has at least one absolutely definitive answer-and one that does not change: Jesus Christ. - continue -
