Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

CDC Report: "Most teenagers are not having sex, abstinence education works." - New data released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) confirms that the majority of teens are not having sex - and making it appear that the abstinence education message is working. According to 2006-2008 survey results, released by the National Center for Health Statistics, 68% of boys and 67% of girls between the ages of 15 and 17 have never had sexual intercourse.

The new data also shows overall sexual contact trends are also moving in the right direction with 53% of boys and 58% of girls 15-17 reporting that they have never had any kind of sexual relations with any partner. The findings come from the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth and examine responses from 13,495 teens and adults ages 15-44, including 5,082 ages 15-24.

"The perception is all kids are engaging in sex. Obviously, that's not the case," Jennifer Manlove, a senior research scientist told USA Today. "They may be more in control of their behaviors than we think."

Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association details that these numbers are a positive change from 2002 when only 46% of boys and 49% of girls reported no sexual contact. She says the report challenges the wisdom of the recent federal funding cuts to abstinence education.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(A Thought) “The way to plan the family is Natural Family Planning, not contraception. In destroying the power of giving life, through contraception, a husband or wife is doing something to self. This turns the attention to self and so destroys the gift of love in him or her. In loving, the husband and wife must turn the attention to each other. Once that living love is destroyed by contraception, abortion follows very easily." - Blessed Mother Teresa

(Medical Students): "Medical Students for Life videos online" -Dr. S is an Alabama physician specializing in Emergency Medicine. He said that he almost was denied graduation for refusing to assist in abortions, and he wished that at back in 1993 he would have had this MedSFLA National Conference data and our network to stand behind him.

ITEM #1: Pornography hurts relationships, employment and well-being

Offering the keynote address at the 10th annual Conference on "Protecting Children and Families from Pornography and other Harmful Materials," Willes said popular culture teaches that pornography is no big deal, it doesn't hurt anyone and everybody does it. "If you don't remember anything else I hope you remember this: This is not a victimless act," he said, noting that pornography puts relationships, employment, healthy sexuality and well-being at risk.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Govt officials involved in China baby trafficking

Chinese media have exposed a child-trafficking ring involving family planning officials in the nation's Hunan province.

****************************************

ITEM #3: Study: High % of Women Using Abortion Drug Hospitalized

A new study from Australia finds a high percentage of women using the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug require hospitalization - undermining the argument that the mifepristone pill is safe for women. The study comes after more than a dozen women worldwide have died from using the abortion drug and at least 1,100 women have been injured from it in the United States, as of 006 FDA figures.

****************************************

ITEM #4: UN population projections prompt calls for population control

"The UNFPA and other population control organizations are loath to report the truth about falling fertility rates worldwide, since they raise funds by frightening people with the specter of overpopulation," Mosher said. "They tell us that too many babies are being born to poor people in developing countries. This is tantamount to saying that only the wealthy should be allowed to have children, and is a new form of global racism." ... "We should stop funding population control programs, and instead turn our attention to real problems like malaria, typhus, and HIV/AIDS," concluded Mosher.

ITEM #5: Does ‘human rights' now mean the right to kill infants?: Vatican newspaper

Does the modern concern for "human rights" in medical practice actually erode the real rights of real humans? An editorial appearing this week in the English language edition of the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano newspaper, points to the growing acceptance in the medical community of withholding life-saving treatment and resuscitation from newborns based on the so-called "quality of life" or "best interests" criteria.

****************************************

ITEM #6: Abortion is ‘worse than ordinary murder' says Korean bishop

The prelate explained that abortion is worse "because it is committed by the parents of the victim and the medical staff that is supposed to protect life," according to Asia News. "It is a brutal crime against a defenceless human being and must be condemned without question," he added.

****************************************

ITEM #7 Planned Parenthood: More Funding, More Abortion

Planned Parenthood often argues that increased funding will enable them to reduce the numbers of abortion, but their own organizational reports don't seem to show that. Revenue Planned Parenthood receives in "Government Grants & Contracts" has gone from $165 million in 1998 to $363.3 million in the organization's fiscal year ending June 30, 2009. During the same time, and at roughly the same rate, abortions have more than doubled at Planned Parenthood, from 165,509 in 1998 to 332,278 in 2009.

****************************************

ITEM #8: Obama Administration Seeks to Test Anthrax Vaccine in Children

Whose children will be sacrificed in an illegal and unethical experiment in the name of Biodefense Preparedness? No child would benefit from exposure to a vaccine that has generated thousands of adverse event reports -- including deaths -- in adults.

****************************************

ITEM #9: They Say Marriage is a Dying Institution: What's Really Dying is Love

The sad state of marriage today has nothing to do with it being outdated or confining or passion-killing. It has everything to do with people who are no longer willing to love each other because they no longer understand what Love is, nor do they know Who Love is. It has everything to do with people being slaves to sexual desire and desecrating the beautiful gift of sexual love that brings forth new life.

****************************************

ITEM #10: The Truth about Post-Partum Depression

There is no objective medical test that can be performed to determine if a woman is suffering from post-partum depression. This same United States government website lists some of the possible symptoms of post-partum depression including: tiredness after delivery, tired from a lack of sleep or broken sleep, feeling overwhelmed with a new baby, doubts about one's ability to be a good mother, stress from changes in home or work routines, unrealistic need to be a perfect mother, loss of a feeling of who one is after having a baby, feeling less attractive, and a lack of free time.

****************************************

ITEM #11: 3 Arguments Against IVF: Artificial Reproduction Is Not Procreation

The Catholic Church teaches that in vitro fertilization (IVF) is always wrong. I understand this to be the case when embryos are made and destroyed. But my doctor said that IVF could be used in a way that wouldn't create and destroy "extra" embryos, even though it would lower our chances for a successful pregnancy. If this is true, why is IVF wrong when used by husbands and wives?

****************************************

ITEM #12: Repelling the Attack on Conscience

There is no need to view the matter of conscience protection in health care as a zero-sum game between conscience-driven healthcare providers and the patients they serve, particularly the most vulnerable. Opponents of conscience protection often portray the situation this way, but the opposite is true. It is by protecting conscience, and thereby elevating the value of respect for life in health care, that we are likely as a nation to serve and reflect the values of most Americans, particularly the vulnerable. There are four primary points that underscore the compatibility of conscience and care.
