Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

The XVIII Asia Pacific Congress on Faith, Family and Life, which I attended, was recently held in Astana, Kazakhstan. The large attendance consisted of the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Tomasz Bernard Peta, 5 bishops, Priests, Russian Orthodox ArchPriests, Various Congregations of Sisters, Delegates from 16 Asian Countries and many local residents. The weather was cooler than that of Japan, but fresh and clean. The duration of the Congress was relatively intense, yet the evenings were free with ample time to mix with the local participants and learn much about their culture, hardships and the new developing Republic. In fact, this year Kazakhstan is celebrating its 20th year of independence from Russia. In spite of the language barrier, the people are considerate, out-going, very kind and hospitable. The trip was a learning experience for me, one I shall not forget soon. I look forward someday to visiting Kazakhstan again and the many Kazakhstani friends I left behind.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(FOCUS ON ASIA): "NEPAL: Gandharva Dalit women and children suffer from hard labour, food and health insecurity" -  The most vulnerable Dalit community living in Nepal's Surket district are suffering from a lack of food as well as hard labour, resulting in malnutrition and serious health problems. By extracting sand, crushing stones from the nearby river, and loading them in a vehicle, a Gandharva family of 5-8 members merely makes 100 rupees (USD 1.26) a day, with which they can barely get two meals.

ITEM #1: Powerful Video: Hitler and America's Abortion Holocaust

When was the last time you watched a 30 minute video on YouTube? For me, I can't even remember. So when I hit "play" on this video I thought I would give it a few minutes and move on. I didn't. I watched it until the end in one sitting.

ITEM #2: Where is the worst place in the world to be a doctor?

At least in Niger and Afghanistan, doctors are supposed to save lives, not take them. Not so in the Netherlands. Read the full article at the URL, where you can also read comments or post a comment.

ITEM #3: Changes in controversial organ donation method stir fears

Comment: Note this disturbing quote: "Another change would specify certain patients, such as perhaps those with spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease, as potential donors." To me, it sounds like that the door is being opened to assisted suicide with organ donation ala Belguim. -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #4: Growing pressure on disabled people heightens fears about euthanasia

The disabled people's charity Scope, in collaboration with ComRes, has published survey results from a series of quarterly polls, which show that disabled people feel that discrimination against them is getting worse.

Dignity in Dying misleads supporters about opposition's resources in order to boost campaign to legalize assisted suicide

****************************************

ITEM #5: ANALYSIS: UN's High Fertility Projections Still Show Rapid Global Aging

Even with its highly optimistic fertility projections, the new UN population forecast predicts a grayer world than the one imagined by its 2009 report which used much lower fertility estimates.

****************************************

ITEM #6: UN Official Says Abortion is a Human Right, Secretary General Endorses Report

While world attention may be focused on the UN General Assembly as it grapples with Palestinian statehood, the methodical drive by United Nations officials to promote legal abortion internationally goes on largely unnoticed. During the summer months, when press coverage of UN activities is minimal, the UN Secretariat released a report from the UN Human Rights Council calling on all nations to accept that women and girls must be granted access to legal abortion in order for them to fully enjoy their human rights.

ITEM #7 Rome Conference Discusses What Expectant Mothers Really Need

Abortion activists at the United Nations routinely claim that abortion access is essential to reduce unacceptably high rates of maternal mortality among women in some developing nations. But this claim is completely false, participants heard earlier this month at a MaterCare International conference in Rome. Abortion isn't what vulnerable pregnant women in such countries need. Instead they need a "Marshall Plan for Mothers" that will provide the basic health care they currently can't get at their time of greatest need.

****************************************

ITEM #8: Island nation of Mauritius gives way to UN pressure to legalize abortion

A 2009 World Health Organization report showed that Mauritius boasts the lowest maternal mortality in Africa, while also being one of the most protective of the unborn. The same WHO report showed that countries such as Ethiopia, which have been pressured to legalize abortion, have not been successful in reducing maternal death. In fact, Ethiopia's rate is 48 times greater than that of Mauritius.

****************************************

ITEM #9: Obama Admin Targets Down Syndrome Babies Under Obamacare

Prenatal testing for Down syndrome should not be considered preventive medicine. Such tests cannot prevent the presence of Down syndrome in a child; but they can decrease the likelihood of a child with Down syndrome surviving beyond the womb. Expectant parents need accurate information, including the many positive outcomes, about life raising a child with Down syndrome.

****************************************

ITEM #10: China's one-child toll reaches 400 million

That senior Chinese Communist Party officials continue to tout how "successful" their brutal population control policy has been in eliminating people reveals their absolute contempt for international standards of human rights. After all, these numbers were achieved by forcing young women, some in the final months of pregnancy, to have abortions, an act that was declared by the Nuremburg Tribunals to be a crime against humanity. But it also reveals a fundamental disconnect with the demographic reality that they themselves have created, namely, a rapidly aging population that is disproportionately male. Thanks to family planning run amuck, China is a country where unborn baby girls are selectively aborted, where young men cannot find brides and where young women are trafficked across borders to meet this demand.

****************************************

ITEM #11: Not Dead Yet: The Fight over 'Death' in Organ Transplantation

When is a person really and truly dead? The debate over the definition of "death" has raged for years, not least because hearts that stop beating can start again, either spontaneously or through resuscitation. Surely, if there is time enough, physicians and family members can be confident in concluding death has come to a loved one. But when the beloved is an organ donor, fixing the moment of death is a matter of great urgency; minutes matter, even seconds.

ITEM #12: IVF babies up to 10 times more likely to suffer rare genetic disorders: geneticist

Babies born from in-vitro fertilization (IVF) are up to 10 times more likely to suffer from rare genetic disorders, according to a pro-IVF geneticist. In an address to the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, University of Toronto geneticist Dr. Rosanna Weksberg called for more study of a link between fertility treatment and certain rare genetic disorders.
