Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

Even though 53 out of 66 studies done since 1957 show an increased risk of breast cancer after induced abortion, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards sent out an impassioned plea for money to fight new Kansas legislation that she deceptively claims will "force doctors to lie to their patients. Even if the woman seeking abortion is a victim of rape or incest, her doctor will lie to her about her risk of breast cancer on the orders of Kansas lawmakers. How awful. How cruel. Help us stop it," she says. Richards is upset because the new legislation requires abortionists to warn women about the correlation between induced abortion and breast cancer. She then says that there is a "complete lack of evidence that abortion will increase the risk of breast cancer." Really, Cecile?

Dr. Angela Lanfranchi blasts Richards' ongoing attempt at hiding the truth. Dr. Lanfranchi is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a breast oncologic surgeon. In October 2011, she summarized the scientific studies about the abortion-breast cancer link: Since 1957 there been 66 studies done which looked at the relation of induced abortion and breast cancer, including 53 which showed a positive correlation and 25 that were statistically significant. There were only 13 which showed no association.

What is most telling is that one study author, Louise Brinton, had been a leader at the 2003 NCI Workshop on Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Risk which concluded that there was no association between breast cancer and induced abortion. In 2009, Louise Brinton has now reported that there is a 40 percent statistically significant increase of breast cancer with induced abortion. Recent studies from Turkey, Iran, and China have been published in the last five years. A list of the epidemiologic studies of the induced abortion and breast cancer risk from 1957 through 2011 is available at the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute website in the form of a reproducible fact sheet.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Organ Donations): "Finis Vitae, 'Is "brain death" true death?" -  Finis Vitae, Is "brain death" true death? are the Proceedings of the "The Signs of Death" symposium conducted at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS), February 3-4, 2005, which occurred at the specific request of His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II's message to the participants was very clear: "Each human being, in fact, is alive precisely in so far as he or she is 'corpore et anima unus', (body and soul united) and he or she remains so for as long as this substantial unity-in-totality subsists." This book must be read by every physician, priest, minister, emergency medical personnel, every parent and every teenager before any consideration of the issues surrounding organ transplantation.

ITEM #1: Russia says no to West's way with HIV

In 2010, President Dmitry Medvedev said heroin was a threat to Russia's national security. This year, Russia pledged to finance programmes to reduce the harm done by drug use, including an HIV crisis that is one of the most severe in the world. But even though the number of new HIV infections in Russia jumped 10 percent over 2011, health workers and global HIV authorities say Moscow has not honoured that promise. This is not due to a lack of cash - Russia is doubling its budget for HIV in 2012 from 2010 levels.

ITEM #2: Child access for father in lesbian family case

ITEM #3: CONCERNED WOMEN BLOG: Man, Woman ... Hen?

Sweden is seeking to repress gender differences by introducing the new pronoun, "hen," into its National Encyclopedia. Sweden takes pride in being "the best country to deal with gender equality." But what they are doing by introducing "hen" is more than creating gender equality or gender neutrality; the measures they are instituting completely eliminate gender distinction.

ITEM #4: International Day for Street Children opportunity to review situation in Pakistan

At the tender age of seven, Tanoo found himself at Karachi Railway Station, where his father deserted him, to face the harsh realities of life. Tanoo is now thirteen and understands the realities of daily life. Being an unprotected child living on the streets of Karachi, Tanoo faced all sorts of violence, including physical, sexual and mental. "Life on the street is not bad as you can easily get delicious food from charities established in the city; however, night time always frightened me," said Tanoo.

ITEM #5: Prison visits in the Philippines

The conditions of prisons in many Asian countries give rise to further abuse and human rights violations, including torture and ill treatment. While existing human rights standards provide for prisoners to have the same human rights as everyone else with certain limitations due to liberty restrictions, the reality is far different. Throughout Asia, prisoners are denied basic human rights, such as the right to adequate food, sanitation, health care. Prisoners also often suffer verbal and physical abuse.

ITEM #6: Asia: Discrimination and violence hamper gender equity

Rape and sexual violence are widespread in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Burma, while a recent increase in such cases has been seen in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. While all human rights abuse victims in Asia struggle to obtain legal redress amidst weak rule of law frameworks and corrupt justice officials, victims of gender-based violence face the added difficulties of discrimination and sexual stereotypes, including from the police and the judiciary. It has been observed all over Asia that rape victims routinely face hostility from law enforcement personnel and the courts.

ITEM #7 Unnatural Selection: Is Evolving Reproductive Technology Ushering in a New Age of Eugenics?

Humanity has long dreamed of perfection, striving to be faster, stronger and brighter, pushing nature to the limit. Four centuries before people were conceived in a petri dish, Swiss alchemist Paracelsus claimed flawless little beings could be grown in pumpkins filled with urine and horse dung, but there is no record he produced a crop.

ITEM #8: The REAL War Against Women - Forced Abortion and Gendercide in China

The real war against women has nothing to do with the morning-after pill or insurance coverage. This war transcends the debate between pro-life and pro-choice. It is not even being waged on U.S. soil. The real war against women is forced abortion and gendercide in China.

ITEM #9: Nurse filmed slapping elderly Alzheimer's sufferer at care home

A nurse has been jailed for slapping an elderly woman at a care home after her family secretly filmed the abuse.

****************************************

ITEM #10: From Cradle To Conflict: Child Soldiers' Growing Role In Latin America's Drug Wars

Approximately 300,000 children around the globe have been recruited as child soldiers. These children are forced to enter "various armed groups, civil militia, paramilitaries and government armed forces."

****************************************

ITEM #11: Blow To Civil Society In Southeast Asia

The killing of a leading environmental activist in Cambodia this week highlights the plight of civil society not only in the country, but in Southeast Asia where authorities are still reluctant to work with civil society groups to protect human rights.

ITEM #12: IVF drugs linked to childhood cancer

Dr Jeremie Rudant, of the Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health, INSERM, Villejuif, France, who led the research, said: "Previous studies have suggested a link between infertility treatments and acute childhood leukaemia, but there haven't been many studies, most of them have been small, and they focused either on IVF or hormonal treatment. "Our study was much larger and it's the first time that a specific increased risk linked to fertility drugs has been found."
