 How extreme is Barack Obama on abortion? Try this: Ask 10 people you know who support legal abortion just how far they go in their support. Ask them whether they support abortion late in pregnancy. Do they support partial-birth abortions? Or abortion to eliminate baby girls? Find your most radically pro-abortion acquaintance and it’s likely he or she still won’t be as radical as Barack Obama. Why? Because Barack Obama, against overwhelming majorities of the population, supported keeping partial-birth abortion legal. He supports keeping sex-selection abortion legal, even though in practice, it usually involves targeting unborn baby girls for death. Obama even opposed a law that called for the humane treatment of babies who are born alive in an abortion. It just doesn’t get any more radical than that. What is live-birth abortion and why didn’t Barack Obama support humane treatment of babies who survive to birth? In a live-birth abortion, an abortionist induces early delivery of an unborn child 16 weeks of age or older. In most cases, the baby is a healthy child. When the baby is born, he or she is put aside to be left to die. Some of these children are old enough to survive if given care. In 2002, the U.S. Congress passed the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act and President Bush signed it into law. It said that any child who is born alive has the full rights of a person and is to be given treatment to preserve his or her life if viable and comfort care if unable to survive. The bill was so uncontroversial that it passed the U.S. Senate 98-0. But Barack Obama didn’t support care for these children. From 2001 to 2003, while in the Illinois Senate, Obama had several chances to vote for Born-Alive bills in Illinois, where such abortions were known to be occurring. In each case he voted “no” or “present” (effectively a “no” vote) and he spoke up against the bills several times. Among his reasons? He said the law would be “placing a burden on the doctor,” meaning the abortionist! In Obama’s twisted way of thinking, the problem that concerned him was the abortionist’s “burden,” not the suffering of a child left gasping for breath or placed in a cold metal pan to die. When National Right to Life exposed Obama’s earlier votes and statements during the 2008 presidential campaign, he accused NRLC of “lying,” but factcheck.org and others verified that National Right to Life’s reports of Obama vote was correct.
